Extent to which animals decay after death until they disappear?

So, I kinda sorta accidentally lassoed a guy off his horse, shot him 12 times, shot his horse, then went on my way because it was all totally accidental and he totally forgave me. But on my way back through the area a while later, I was greeted by this sight.

I've never seen an animal decay to this extent. Has anyone else?

i like to shoot gators (because they are evil) and when i come back to the same spot, i see a rotten carcass or sometimes a skeleton. so no, that is not unusual/

I've seen plenty of rotten carcasses, but they're usually gone the next time I come around. This was the first time I've ever seen a skeleton like this.
