MAJOR ENDGAME SPOILER Question

Heads up forum. I'm going to ask a question in the spoiler filter about the endgame since sadly it was spoiled for me already. I advise you to back out now if you haven't finished the game because I can't guarantee the replying posters will filter their answers.

Spoiler

Ok, Thanks to the "WHITE HORSE" thread, I now know that Arthur dies "somehow"... (Don't tell me how!)

Is it always guaranteed that he dies in the end? Or can certain decisions save him?

I'm absolutely crushed because I'm really loving Arthur so far and I never did like John Marston, and I find him extremely annoying in this game.

What's the goal of the endgame? I may just immediately restart so I can play as Arthur once again and never finish a second time.

Also what's the name of the mission where "it happens"?

The mission is called Red Dead Redemption. Although, it's a follow up mission directly after another mission called Our Best Selves (the final train heist).
