alaskajen
I cannot seem to figure out how the deadeye targeting works, even after reviewing tutorials and video walkthroughs online. For sure, I've seen an X appear when using the R1 (PS4) button to target. But only one time! It hasn't worked any other time I've tried and I'm stuck on Sharpshooter 2 challenge. I'm in Chapter 3 — deadeye level 7! I've been trying to use the Springfield Rifle and Carbine Repeater to get the Sharpshooter 2 challenge complete. I find 2 different species, I aim at the first one, select deadeye with R3, time slows, I put reticule where I want to fire and hit R1 but no X comes up. I've read that you can get unlimited Xs depending on how many bullets you have in your gun; one guy showed marking 10+ Xs on one animal with some sort of rifle. I've also read that you can only get as many Xs as you have loaded, so 6 for revolver, 1 for rifle, 2 for shotgun, etc. Which is it?!? And ... WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING WRONG?!? The only thing I can think of is that I'm still holding in L2 while doing all this for aiming. But maybe I need to release that once I'm in deadeye? I'm about ready to find a real gun and shoot my real self in my real face. ;-(

I did this by shooting a bounty hunter (and his horse) and some bird that happened to be flying by (using a repeater). HOLD aim (L2), engage dead eye (right stick), press R1 over each target, then shoot (R2) - now you can release L2 Took me a while to figure it out, but it's actually extremely helpful. Get used to it, and you can easily kill 7+ targets at once (and look like a badass in the process). Edited November 6, 2018 by Truth
alaskajen
Thak you Truth! I've tried the repeater too. But maybe I'm standing too far away ... UGH! I will keep trying. I really would love to feel like a badass right now! 🙂
alaskajen
OH DEAR LORD! Wasn't working with repeater either, even when standing practically ontop of a pronghorn. So I had a brainstorm and just figured it out ... You can't be scoped. FFS Edited November 6, 2018 by alaskajen

I didn't fully figure it out until right at the start of chapter 3 and I did the same thing with checking vids and tutorials. I'm convinced something's different about it from the original RDR.
Skysaw
I'm guessing you may have missed the message text that explains how Dead Eye changes at a certain level. At the start of the game, simply moving your sights over a target will paint the Xs on. After a certain level, you need to hit R2 for each X. This is actually an improvement on how deadeye works, since you can more carefully place on multiple targets. Edit - never mind. Seems you figured it out while I was typing! I find a long, narrow hallway, like the back of the saloon in Valentine. When I get bored I blow the head off of Frontier Jack (or whatever that blowhard's name is), and then retreat behind the barber stand with my back against the door. As they come in, they get funneled to the hallway and I unload with my dual scholfields. I'll take a picture of the corpse wall next time--I was too caught up in the moment when it was happening last night at 3AM

I never really used it in gunfights because I was so focused on the action. I played around with it while hunting, and now there really are no gunfights. Good use of dead eye means you kill most of your targets before they even draw on you. Practice with animals (also helps you get perfect pelts) if you're having trouble. Birds are great for it if you can spot a group. At the very least, you don't have to worry about being shot at.
