So here is my ?

If I kill a 3 star animal and sell the entire 3 star carcass to the butcher or trapper do I receive the same amount as if I split it up? i.e. let's stay I get $7 for a perfect unskinned 3 star buck.

If I skinned that buck first and then sold both parts to the trapper or butcher would I receive $4 (pelt) and $3 (carcass)?

Just wondering which is better as far as making money goes?

Thank you.

I don't bother with carcasses unless I need it for an upgrade (or it's a legendary animal). It's just not worth the hassle in my opinion. I just shoot and skin everything I see, stacking as many pelts as I can collect onto my horse. With that satchel upgrade, you'll have a crap load of meat in no time that will easily make up the difference.

Same as @Truth  The only carcasses i keep are for the few upgrades at camp.  However, if i go to turn in stuff to Pearson and he says food is running low then i will go out and bag 3 or 4 animals and bring back the whole thing unskinned since you can't just gut the animal and bring it back like you really would if you're just going for the meat.  Pearson can deal with the guts since he's whining about food and too lazy to help hunt.

Plus you can carry numerous hides, except for the larger animals, and only 1 carcass at a time.

I don't know if this was a fluke but I was on my way to the trapper with a perfect cow hide. I came across 2 rabbits, both 3 star, I killed on and hung it on the saddle. I killed the 2nd and skinned, stored the skin and hung the skinned carcass on the other side of the saddle.

Went to the trapper, the complete perfect carcass he paid $5.50, the skinned carcass he paid $.60 and perfect pelt he paid me $1.50 so it does seem like the complete carcass is worth more.

I normally just skin them all since they don't go bad and only sell them when I'm full or happen to be at a trader/butcher.

I guess what I'll probably do is keep only pelts and when I'm on my way to the trapper/butcher if one comes along I'll shoot it and hang it, otherwise a few dollars here or there isn't going to make a big difference.

That's a surprisingly large difference...

Heck yeah! Just shot a 3 star buck and took it complete to the butcher, paid $11!

How is that only worth twice as much as a rabbit...? lol

Because improperly harvested venison tastes terrible, while rabbit is succulent and delicious.  It's like duck, but a tad less fatty.

I've never had either one...

So I guess in theory you receive more for the complete animal b/c they are getting more meat. i.e. the deer pelt gives you some meat but the remaining carcass if left on the ground leaves a good amount of meat left on the ground.

I wish you could keep the rest of the bear & elk, seems like a huge amount of meat there.

If you're in the continental US, I'll send you some after I go Bambi Blasting the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Some of us have impeccable aim IRL.  Of course, an red dot scope on a picatinny rail with a bolt action Mossberg (with a rifled barrel) tend to make it easier than taking a photo, but still...

i miss eating rabbit :(  all the ones around here have been parasitic for the last few years.  My uncle used to raise them when i was younger.  my brothers and I would take turns harvesting one or 2 for dinner each time we went there.  I can't even image now what people would think of us stringing a rabbit up by it's hind feet and swinging a baseball at it's head.  30+ years ago when we were kids that's how it was done.  now that would probably mean jail time and i'll grow up to be a serial killer.

there's almost no fat on rabbit,  in survival situations it's bad to just eat rabbit, you can die of lean starvation i think they call it, body needs fat to survive.

Back on topic :)  i'll have to check out the skinned vs non skinned carcasses tonight while i'm hunting for the satchels.  Not sure if the price difference is worth only being able to carry 1 and run back to the butcher every time.   Actually no, it's not, i'm not needing cash that badly.
