Knife Doesn’t Work...

So I got the game brand new and a “refurbished” Xbox One from GameStop. 

RDR2: everything seems to work in the game, except the knife, even when it’s in my hand. 

I’d think the right trigger would be it, but I’ve tried everything. 

Thoughts?

Don't you have to press B as its a melee attack? I can't quite remember, haven't used the knife all that much to be honest

Yep, it's a melee weapon.  Press B (or the PS equivalent) to use the knife.

You can't just swing it whenever either, you have to have a target.

Super odd that it would be the only thing that "doesn't work".

Occam's Razor folks. The simplest explanation is usually the right one. User error versus broken game play? User error wins every time.

No offense to the OP but some of this game's "problems" are fabricated.

@rick249kdr try to be more welcoming, we don't want to scare someone off just because they weren't aware of something...

@Ru5tyTalon if you have any other issues, feel free to ask. Most of us are more than happy to offer up tips and help out any way we can. There are a lot of things the game doesn't explain very well (or at all). I've spent over 48 hours in game and I'm still learning new things all the time!

However, pressing B or RT, with a wolf practically touching me,(motionless) and the arm only moves a hair. Nothing. 

And I shouldn’t have to figure stuff out when it’s go time.

I don't really get it myself. I was very disappointed when I discovered I can't swing my knife around at my leisure. I thought it would've been a good intimidation technique...

It seems that the knife is mostly just for cutting ropes and the skinning animation. Can't really use it on animals...

Well, I got knocked off my horse and run down by a bear earlier. I used the knife to get it off of me, and was able to shoot it. 

Only time it’s worked for me. 

Like an episode of House.

No seizures or hallucinations yet. 

I’ll keep messing with it. Thx.

I really wasn't trying to offend I promise. Now that I re-read your post, mine jumps to conclusions that weren't present, and makes me look like a turd. My apologies.

I know there are some salty people around here and I'm definitely not one of them. 

Sometimes I get wrapped up in the whole mess of what's broken mechanics and what's made up.

Ah, that's the other use I forgot.

Another tip - ALWAYS MANUALLY SAVE.

I save every few minutes. It always sucks to die and lose sh*t, and you can't always know what's going to happen up the road a bit. Every time I skin something, sell something, buy something, craft stuff, spot a new animal, or travel on horseback, I do a manual save.

@rick249kdr we all make mistakes from time to time, I certainly wouldn't hold this against you. I often make myself look like a turd (if I haven't yet, you'll see eventually).

This could've easily been one of those "I can't figure this out so the game is broken and I want a refund" threads (I've seen a lot of those). I always try to help them out anyway. They're usually just frustrated about something and really appreciate the help.

You can use your knife to get a killing blow on an animal. I've done this when I've wounded a deer, and it was laying on the ground badly wounded crying out in pain. I think I may have also done with to a lasso'd animal.  I think I read somewhere that this can help with getting an undamaged hide. When you use the knife in the above 2 ways, it tells you to press a certain button in the lower right of your TV, to do a killing blow.

I guess I just always figured if a grizzly was gonna tear out my throat, I’d make it my dying mission to do the same. lol

A knife is the last defense in a stuffhitsthefan sort of moment. 

It just don’t seem right...lol

you can kill with the knife.  I've done it many times.  Aim first then stab.  I shot 4 small game arrows at a crab, missed every one, ran up on it and stabbed it a few times to make me feel better.   before i realized the weapon to use was in the animal info i kept trying to stab snakes to get the perfect hides   don't recommend it, unless you've stocked up on lots of healing tonics or ginseng plants, and it doesn't work anyway.  it damages the hide so they're just good or poor.

You also use the knife for the killing blow when lassoing animals

If ol' Artie's being mauled, he'll whip out the knife automagically. I've been able to manually use the knife by equipping it and hitting O (B on Xbone). Wolves, though? Kick them fools. Get 'em off of you with a kick, then shoot 'em in the face with the trusty sawn-off.
