Question: What can I do if Red Dead Redemption 2 crashes on launch with the error "Red Dead Redemption 2 Exited Unexpectedly"?

AMD owners should update their graphics driver version to 19.11.1 or above in the Radeon Software app, or manually using this link: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Question: How can I troubleshoot issues with launching or crashing of Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC?

Answer: The following steps resolve many common launching or crashing issues with Red Dead Redemption on PC.

Update your video card drivers

Temporarily disable your Anti-virus software

  • Windows 10 Users can disable the Anti-virus potion of WIndows Security using the steps outlined in the following article:  https://support.microsoft.com/help/4027187/
  • Steps may vary for other antivirus software. Please refer to your software providers documentation for details on how to temporarily disable antivirus protections.

Update the Rockstar Games Launcher

  1. Close any open Rockstar Games Titles
  2. Close the Rockstar Games Launcher
  3. If the Rockstar Games Launcher icon is in the Windows Taskbar, right-click and select Exit
  4. Restart the Rockstar Games Launcher and allow any updates to apply

Clear your local Rockstar Games Launcher profile details

  1. Start the Rockstar Games Launcher
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Account Information
  4. Select Delete Local Profile

Note: This will remove all profile details from your local machine and require you to sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher again. It will not delete your Social Club account or any saved games. Signing in to Social Club will recreate your local profile.

  5. Select Confirm
  6. Sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher again
  7. Launch Red Dead Redemption 2

Solved! Defaulting to windowed borderless from fullscreen. It appears that it defaults only if the API is set to DX12. But if set to Vulkan, it keeps the setting.

We have identified several ongoing issues some players are experiencing on specific machine configurations and are currently working to resolve them.

While this is not a comprehensive list, we have identified the group of key remaining issues below as high priority problems that we are working to resolve in future updates targeted  to release starting early next week.

Crashes on Start Up

  • We have identified several crashes as the game is booting related to certain settings configurations. We are currently testing fixes for these issues to implement as soon as possible.

Crashes After Start Up

  • In the last update we were able to fix instances where players reported their performance degraded over time. While this fix helped many players, it also highlighted other undiscovered crashes in certain circumstances that we are now addressing.

"Mouse Cursor" Issues

  • Some players using the Epic Games Launcher are experiencing issues with their mouse cursor. We’ve identified the root cause of this issue and will address it in the upcoming update. Until then, please follow the steps here to resolve the issue:

Settings Greyed out

  • In order to implement certain workarounds related to ongoing issues, we have temporary delayed the accessibility of the settings menu. We will work to restore regular functionality in a future update. In the meantime, the setting options will be available after 120 seconds.

Framerate Stuttering

  • Some players have been experiencing intermittent frame rate stuttering despite powerful GPUs. We’re working closely with Nvidia to eliminate the remainder of these issues.

Framerate Affecting Core Drain

  • A small number of players are experiencing an issue where their framerate is altering how their cores drain.

GPU Drivers

Please note that many players are using older GPU drivers which have not been updated to support Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC. Go here for details on how to update your GPU drivers:
