anc127
If you're like me and are trying to hunt down your animals to upgrade everything, then you're trying to get 3 star pelts and make sure you are doing with the correct weapon. I have searched countless websites, wrote multiple things down, and come to find out some is wrong. So this is just a heads up for anyone desperately trying to snag a beaver pelt. Most places classify the beaver as a "medium sized" animal in the game; thus, allowing you to assume you can kill it with a Repeater or Sniper Rifle... This causes the 3 star animal you scouted to lose a star, and there goes your perfect pelt. After much experimentation (AND MUCH FRUSTRATION) I have found that if you head shot the beaver with the Varmint Rifle you do not lose a star and come out with a perfect pelt. The beaver should be classified as a Moderate sized animal and killed with the Varmint Rifle.
Smash_N_Grab-
Look at your compendium in the menu. Once you've studied an animal it says in the compendium what weapons are best for a clean kill on each one 👍 1
Kean_1
Yep..... Varmint rifle or (remember) the bow. I have a friend who actually prefers the bow and is getting pretty good at it. .....I still suck at it but then again, I haven't much time trying to get to know it. At this point in the game, I only go for pelts as targets of opportunity or (like yourself) for specific purposes. They simply don't fetch enough in trade to be worth my time IMO / IME. I've actually found human attackers (ambushes, etc.) to be a lot more lucrative as they usually have jewelry, tonics and other more valuable items on them when looting. ....then I go to the local fence, doc, etc. to unload it all. Melting Snowflakes
Use your binoculars to study animals first, it tells you what rifle to use - repeater, varmint, bow, rifle, etc ...

DylBandit
My weapons of choices in hunting is bow or tomahawk. These weapons are quiet and will help you keep the animal near so you don't scare them away using a loud gun if you miss. The tomahawk is a great weapon to use when riding on the horse, and you see animals passing or running away. One clear throw at the animal and they are dead instantly and you can retrieve your tomahawk.

Sorry didn't see anywhere in your post stating you'd got your info from compendium, just said websites so I was trying to help. Compendium also doesn't say anything about medium animal and if it did it still clearly says varmint rifle which was my point.
