Picking up enemy guns

Hey Guys

once you guys kill enemys in rdr2, do you pick up their guns?

normally I will have my prefered gun equipped, and it seems you have to swap it to see the enemy guns stats. And I wont risk loosing my good gun.

is there a Way to see the stats of a gun on the ground before you pick it up?

and is there a reason at all? Or are most enemy guns always werse than the ones you get via storymissions or buy in the shop?

thabk you for your time and help

I never swap guns unless it’s a rare gun or one I don’t have. Usually they are worn guns and will more often than not be worse than yours.

Also, I noticed when I picked up a rare shotgun and swapped for my pump action it was back on my horse when I returned so I don’t think you’ll lose the gun if you do swap.

Correct. It always goes back to your horse.

No reason to pick up enemy weapons. They're practically all "worn" weapons, so they're not gonna be as good as yours. But even if you do swap weapons, whether it's from an enemy or a new weapon you find somewhere, the weapon you currently have equipped will still be available via your horse. Picking up new weapons "unlocks" them, and will forever be available via your horse.

Most of the time, the guns I find off the dead are the same ones I already have.  When I first encountered this, I thought maybe I could sell it to a merchant. But I've not been able to sell any guns to a merchant.

But, I've acquired some new guns from successfully dueling others. This was form one of the Stranger missions. Those guns had slight differences. And might be needed for an achievement or challenge. It potentially might be in the middle of a gun fight. Like when suddenly you could really use a shotgun, but didn't equip one from your horse. And you find one off one of the dead. But you don't have time to run back to your horse to swap it out.

Yeah that is one of the things that upsets me most...the fact that you're in the middle of a gunfight thinking:"why didn't i bring my rifle?"

To be clear,it doesn't upset me that you have to take it with you (which is only realistic)...but the fact that i forgot to bring it AGAIN...or standing there with your bow and arrow lol

On topic: so if i take a gun from the ground, the one i drop always goes to the horse?

Correct. The one you drop goes to the horse.

Furthermore, it seems you can only have one of whatever type of gun you have collected on your horse inventory. And only the most upgraded version of it. Any lesser version of it won't be in the horse's inventory.

So for example, I have the Cattleman Revolver. I've upgraded it a bit. I go out shooting with it and kill someone. I swap out their worn non-upgraded Cattleman Revolver and leave my upgraded Cattleman Revolver on the ground. My upgraded version goes back to my horse inventory. If say a few minutes later, I find another type of Revolver and swap that out and leave the worn non-upgraded one on the ground somewhere, then that worn non-upgraded Cattleman Revolver won't show up on my horse's inventory. For my upgraded Cattleman Revolver supersedes it. And that upgraded one will be the only version of it available on my horse's inventory.  At least that is what I've noticed so far. So in other words, I won't lose my upgrade progress on a weapon.

The one thing to consider though is that if you kill anyone with a "name" then they drop a special weapon that is only available then. If you don't pick it up, you never get to have it and if you're after getting 100% in the compendium then you'll need every special gun.

I've just restarted the game from 93% completion for exactly this reason.
