Taking cover

On Xbox, A kind and benevolent despot. I cannot get the my character to find cover on the other side of the door after knifing the two guards. I get into the buiding, dutch is on one side of the door, I am on the other side. Mini Map shows I am on the correct spot. but it will not trigger. Is anyone else having this issue. The same thing happened when myself and Lenny were going to steal the wagon from the gun runners on an earlier mission. I had to restart the mission a couple times before it would trigger me "being in cover" . Even that is not working this time.

I have had to do this for a couple missions and I honestly couldn't figure out why. I too tried to ask for help on the issue but no one was able to figure it out either. I was going to contact Rockstar but I got the mission going that I was stuck on so I didn't bother. Maybe it is worth asking them or bringing it to their attention.

I’m having the same problem , did you manage to get around it?

Are you sure you’re actually in cover and not just crouching. It won’t trigger if you just crouch in the correct spot. On PS4 you have to press R1 to enter cover and sometimes it looks very similar to a crouch.

Same thing i was wondering.  Never had a problem with the Lenny mission, done it twice now after forgetting to save and having to restore for something else, haven't gotten to Dutch's mission yet.  I like to ignore him when he calls my name in camp.

I have done crouching and taking cover and messed up myself a few times. I wasn't aware there was a difference and thought it was an auto thing.

Currently I have the exact same problem. I have started a ticket with RockStar. But if someone could explain the difference between cover and crouching I have tried about everything. Thanks very much for your help.

Crouching is with the left thumbstick, cover is RB (R1 on PS4). You also have to be near something that you can hide behind for cover (rock, wall, crates, etc).

8. Always look for cover

Getting shot in RDR2 often causes you to lose a significant amount of health, so never start shooting in the open. Always approach a gunfight after looking for potential cover spots, be it a huge rock, a cabin, or a horse cart. Pressing R1/RB near cover will move you behind it, making it almost impossible for an enemy to get a clean shot in. Holding L2/LT whilst behind cover will make you appear from behind it but letting go will drop you right back into cover. Be smart and don’t spend a lot of time away from cover because you’ll die and will have to replay the whole section again.

In later gun fights, things get pretty chaotic. Using cover helped me survive those encounters.

I have the same issue. Stuck at the door with Dutch trying to rescue Javier. I'll try the RB/R1 solution again.

I had the same problem. I am playing on a Mac Pro 5,1 computer with Windows 11 Pro boot, Radeon RX 6800 GPU and Dell G3223Q gamers display. This machine behaves just like any ordinary PC. I do not have the R1 key that has been cited, above, as solution for this problem on Play Station, or the RB. It took me some time to discover that the key on PC is Q. I had been doing it wrong all along. Taking shelter makes gun fights much easier to survive. Important discovery.
