What does the RDR2 online camp dog do?

So to my surprise...They added cute little doggos for your camp but do they do more than sit beside your tent and being petted? Can they leave camp with you or did I just waste $330 on a camp dog?

The following skills/upgrades are available to learn through the Trader Role progression:

  • Reduces the chance of raids occurring on your Trader business

  • Divination:
    • Increases distance for audio and vibration clues when near Collectibles
  • Provisions Satchel Upgrade:
    • Upgrades the capacity of certain items in this pouch by ten
  • Potential:
    • Disturbed earth piles with buried Collectibles will be highlighted in Eagle Eye
  • Intuition:
    • Search areas shown by Collector’s Maps are reduced in size
  • Equine Assistance:
    • Allows picking of herbs and plants while remaining on horseback
  • Valuables Satchel Upgrade:
    • Upgrades the capacity of certain items in this pouch by five
  • Several new items and variations of Horse equipment have been added to Red Dead Online and can be purchased from any Stable or the Handheld Catalogue. All of these must be unlocked through Role progression:

  • Several new Camp upgrades have been added to Red Dead Online and can be purchased from the Wilderness Outfitters at your Camp once unlocked:

    • Stew Pot
    • Camp Flags - Unlocked Through Club Rewards
    • Cripps Outfits - Unlocked Through Club Rewards
    • Camp Songs - Unlocked Through Club Rewards
    • Bucher Table
    • Weapon Locker
    • Camp Dog American Foxhound - PS4 Early Access
  • Three new Camp themes have been added to Red Dead Online and can be purchased from the Wilderness Outfitters at your Camp once unlocked:
    • Bounty Hunter Camp Theme
    • Collector Camp Theme
    • Trader Camp Theme
  • Two new Walk Styles have been added to Red Dead Online and can be set through the Online Options section of the Player menu once unlocked. These must be unlocked through Role progression:
    • Veteran Walk
    • Easy Rider Walk
  • A new set of Daily Challenges have been added into rotation, as well as additional Daily Role Challenges available for unlocked Roles
  • New Awards have been added, including new sets of Role-specific Awards

They sit by your tent and look cute.  They are camp guard dogs.

They don't become camp guard dogs though until the option to train them unlocks at trader level 5 or 6.

1 - Runs around or rests and makes the camp feel more alive

2 - Barks to welcome you and for goodbye when you leave

3 - Lets you pat him anytime

4 - Makes Cripps become angry with his presence and when u pat him

5 - Let's any other freeroam players go into ur camp and pat him

6 - Dont know yet about guard mode cause I have not reached that level

I have heard from other players your camp dog will come to you to warn you of a raid at your camp when you are out hunting etc. So far my camp has only been raided one time. I was close and saw the screen notification of the raid but did not notice the dog coming to warn. Has anyone had your dog come warn you of a raid?

Unfortunately that is a myth. Your dog stays at the camp at all times. RS are considering making it possible to hunt with your dog in future expansions.

I had my first camp raid yesterday.

I had just left camp to go hunting, when almost simultaneously I heard barking, and "camp raid" "defend camp from raiders" popped up on the screen. 

So he did bark, but as far as an advanced warning.......not so much.

I was too busy defending to notice if he was trying to bite anyone or not.

Update: 

I was about a mile or two from my camp hunting when this white dot came running towards me and barking. I  was surprised to see it was my dog.  Sure enough, just after seeing it the camp raid warning popped up. 

I was far enough away the the bandits were running away with a sack of supplies by the time I got back.  

I had to dispatch the bandits and return my supplies to camp. 

So, yes, the dog will come get you.  

 

Surely it won't even initiate a raid if you're say, on the other side of the map.  

Both raids I've had, I have been relatively close to camp.

Nope, that is dead wrong! I've been raided  once and my dog came to get me while I was out hunting a little ways away. My camp was along the Kamassa River and I was hunting for birds and gators along the coast north of St. Denis.
