Might get a dog

I am debating on this. I have to make sure I can afford it but I am allowed to own one where I rent. It can be any size as well but I can only own one. I always preferred bigger dogs but I am worried that since I do not have much of a yard space (just a small fenced in area of 8 x 13) getting a larger breed or dog in general will be a bad idea. Anyone with dogs know anything about this? I am considering getting an English Mastiff.

I grew up with my family owning Rottweilers. We lived in a fairly large house but our yard was like a hole in the wall. It was all driveway and then maybe a 12 x 22 strip of grass. My parents put a small pool there as well so even less grass for the dogs. They all seemed happy and none were ever overweight but they got walked 4 days minimum a week. Not short walks either, 1 hour+. I think as long as you make sure you walk it and play with it indoors, it will be fine.

Some big dogs are lazy. The recommendations they give are based on breed specifics but it doesn't always mean your dog will fit every characteristic. My ex had a big mutt living with her in a tiny condo. I'm not much of a big dog person. I think they smell and just make a mess of things but do some research.

While that breed is large, I don't think they require as much activity as other working class dogs but you will have to look into it. My uncle owned one and he was very mellow and lazy. He would only want to go for walks if they were less than 30 minutes and he preferred the car ride to the park way more.

Same here. I grew up with dogs and was just annoyed by them. If I do ever decide to get one be it for protection or whatnot, I will be finding the best breed for me and getting it as young as I can so it can be trained properly. So many people ruin dogs by not training them right and my mom and brother are two prime examples of this. Both their dogs are equally annoying and don't listen for crap.
