Lassoing players and avoiding the lasso.
Madrigalian replied to Saesee Tiin's topic in Red Dead Online
A couple of nights ago I was lassoed in free roam. First time, I broke free with my knife quickly enough. But before I could get sights on the enemy he grappled me down with the lasso and this time I was hogtied. I broke free while he was putting me up on his horse and had my repeater out immediately. I was able to hit him in the face with the butt of the rifle and put two shots into his belly before he could recover. I waited for him to come back for another attempt but he never did. It's the small victories that I savor. -
I'm not to the level to get either yet in the online mode. But I did use both in the story mode. Personally, I like the Fox Trotter for Free Roam but much preferred the Turkoman when I knew I was going into a firefight. I am assuming the same will hold true in online mode. If I had to choose one or the other for online mode and PvP it would be the Turkoman, hands down.

Scale the missions according to number of players and their levels
Madrigalian replied to Joe's topic in Red Dead Online
I agree, the Crawfish mission can be quite frustrating sometimes. I've done it at least a dozen or more times now and pretty much have it down to a science. I can usually capture my guy before he even makes it to the river. Still, occasionally things just don't go according to Hoyle. Last night for instance, I lassoed my guy at the river and while dismounting he moved into the river so that when I was hogtying him he promptly drowned as lag kept me from being able to pick him up out of the water. /sigh In my experience it is by far the most often failed and repeated mission. Nothing is more frustrating as having 3 guys on the railroad tracks and have the notice come up that someone let their 4th guy get away. Rinse/Repeat. -
Most of the names all look the same to me. I'm sure there's a kernel of difference in there between them all. But when you have to sift through all of the cute; Large Font/Small Font/Numbers for Letters/Letters for Numbers/ETC. it just isn't worth my time to decipher who's who. If I am trying to figure out who you are and your name looks like a fill in for an eye chart, guess what, I will simply call you "Target Next" and move on. Personally, I think this hurts the process of building an online "community", but that's probably just me. In all likelihood, even if they did start using character names instead, people would just name their characters in the same fashion. So, I don't know that it gains us much unless R* made a naming policy which would have to be policed and managed. Other companies have done this in the past. But I don't think this is a road R* wants to go down.

I would be in favor of just about anything that would make camps more useful. Having the "option" to spawn back at camp upon death would be helpful, I think. As well as, just being able to spawn there when you log in, etc. But, forcing you to spawn at camp upon death... meh. Not so much. I don't know that there needs to be any greater penalty for death than what already occurs. It generally occurs too often already and happens so fast sometimes it's already pretty frustrating. Last night I was killed 3 times in the span of about 4 minutes by a posse that was camping me. I never saw any of them except as pink blips on my radar screen or as pictures after the fact showing what they shot me with. Since they were already on horseback and I had to whistle and wait for my horse to come find me I was at a serious disadvantage in getting away from them. Crouching didn't help when they knew my general position at the point where I spawned back in. After the third one, I quickly joined a story mission and got out of dodge. I could hear their hoof beats as I was pulled into the mission lobby. Just my personal opinion, but as long as the game continues to have a "one shot, one kill" head shot ability, I think any greater emphasis on death penalties would just make the whole thing hugely frustrating and would cost subscribers. Now, make head shots or at least insta-death from head shots harder to get so that you have time to react and possibly return fire or flee, then it might be worth exploring. But as it stands now... I just can't see it.

Red Dead Online Microtransctions Now Available
Madrigalian replied to Poggy's topic in Red Dead Redemption 2
So, this is the category I often fall into. I'm a working professional who puts in a lot of hours at work. I have kids and a wife who all have hobbies and commitments of their own that take time away from other things. While I have been an avid gamer for many years and have crushed many games with literally hundreds of hours grinding or campaigning to either advance or unlock new things, I simply do not have the time these days to make such a commitment to *any* game anymore. So for me, unless there is a micro-transaction option or some other means to mitigate some of that grind and commitment with any given game I generally avoid playing it. I do have friends in RDRO that have already far surpassed me in ranks simply because they have the time to grind them out. The micro-transactions provide me (theoretically) with at least the ability to "participate" with my friends even if only at a disadvantage for the lack of play time, ranks, and expertise. I do not support "Pay to Win" games but appreciate games that allow for a reasonable amount of "Pay to keep up" kind of model, for folks like me. Having said that, another great point that was brought up earlier is whether or not now is the time to invest real money into purchases for a game this early in development. For all the reasons discussed earlier, I am in agreement and do not plan to spend any real money on the game for some time, at least until I can reasonably know that the value of the investment is worth the cost. -
Red Dead Online Microtransctions Now Available
Madrigalian replied to Poggy's topic in Red Dead Redemption 2
Exactly right. The fact that they opened the store is a very good sign that they have no intention of a post beta reset. If they felt it would be necessary I would think they would have held off on the store until after. -
Hi Guys, I wanted to try and start a thread around sharing some of those special tips and tricks we may have learned through the course of play. This isn't meant to be utilized for lengthy tutorials or walk through discussions but a place for quick questions and answers on those little things that might make "all the difference" in someone's game day. I will start with both a TIP and a couple of sample questions that hopefully others might know or have experience with... hopefully, we may all find some pearls of wisdom here. TIP: Did you know - You can quickly and easily free yourself from being Lassoed by other players by simply pulling out your knife immediately after being lassoed. Question: When someone jumps up behind you on your horse, what is the method to kick them off if you don't want them there? Question: What is the button combination to "dodge" and leap to the ground to avoid incoming fire?

nice. simple. thanks.

Did it just show up in your available funds? Or did you have to go to the lockbox and/or log out and back in for it to show up? Curious minds want to know.

I think Cripps is psychotic. All he does is sit there playing the same tunes all day on that Harmonica. Just waiting for me to leave so he can hide the camp in a new spot. He moved it 4 times in the span of about 20 minutes the other day on me. The last time, I marked the new location and road out to it. But by the time I got there he had moved again (I must have missed the notice) and there was someone else's camp in the spot. So, two states away...

Shoot the Nag. Whistle again.

If Quigley can go down under... why not us?

I agree, this is extremely aggravating. I'm just hoping it's a beta bug and not a "feature" for live.

Post your Red Dead Online character here!
Madrigalian replied to SadieRocks's topic in Red Dead Online
I'm on my third character generation and will likely delete him and do it again. I seem to be unable to get the look that I want. When I create the character everything looks "pretty good". Then I enter the game and see the character in a cinematic mode and think, "What the hell is wrong with this dude's face?!?" lol Chins seem particularly tricky. So far, the first character was male, the second female, and now on my third, another male. I am confident my third try will be the charm and I'll probably go female again. Just stay away from the heavy makeup! hehehe -
I am all for adding sex just for the sake of adding sex, in pretty much any and all aspects of my daily life. So... yeah. There's that.

Has nothing to do with the game directly, just taking the opportunity to rant a bit. But what really chaps my hide is when players ride past you, wait for you to go by, and then circle back and shoot you in the back of the head. When someone is riding toward me, I draw my gun and wait to see if they act hostile. If they do, I draw up on them and we go to town. All civilized like. The way it should be. But when some squirly assed chicken little waits for you to go by just so they can shoot you in the back... man, you can bet I've got your name on a list. I cannot abide cowards and cravens.
-
Heheh.. yeah. I had help, pushing and prodding. My wife would watch me play and before long she was asking me, "When are you going to go back and talk to Dutch again?!? I want to know what happens next!" lol And of course, the story being so good, I had to oblige her.

Where to find free gear in RDR2 Online
Madrigalian replied to ZathrasParadox's topic in Red Dead Online
Yeah, I also have the Ultimate edition. Both horses, the Arabian and the Thoroughbred, should be available to you. They are to me. In the end though, I think the Thoroughbred is the better horse and the one I've chosen to ride. I sold the starter horse to avoid the additional stable fee and the Arabian remains an available option until later. Although, later I intend to focus on getting a Missouri Fox trotter (for Free Roam) and a Turkoman (for PvP challenges) and will likely toss the thoroughbred. I may keep the Arabian just for Race challenges but I haven't decided for sure. I just hate how small and skittish they are. -
I'm the same way. I have Autosave turned off because I don't want it to save at the wrong moment. I manually save after missions, task completions, perfect pelt received, etc. I also create a new save file with each major story arc or character development point. This enables me to go back to key points or chapters in the story if I want to with clear breaks in the save progression. When I decided I wasn't ready to complete the game and end my time with Arthur in Chapter 6, it was easy for me to identify the last save in chapter 4 when I completed Arthur's satchels and start again fresh from there. In chapter 5 again now and taking my time.

Hey! That was me! It's ok. I never liked you anyway.

The other day I watched a panther attack and bring down a deer. It looked almost exactly like something you would see on National Geographic. The cat was eventually wrapped around the front of the deer, at its throat, while the deer struggled on the ground. This gave me a perfect vantage point to shoot the cat square in the head. Which I did. Neither pelt was perfect. But it was still a two for one kill. And very cool to watch. Glad I had a friend over to see it with me. So, I know I didn't just dream it. lol

Nice! Thanks!

Personally, I am really tired of this argument. Been going on since before Asheron's Call. For whatever reason it always boils down to name calling and derogatory remarks toward the two styles of play. PVP'ers calling Non PVP'ers names and vise versa. I like PvP. I don't like griefers. Point is, it's just different styles of play, both legitimate. It's up to R* to decide if there's enough of a base on either side to support both. In the meantime, I will continue to hunt down griefers with extreme prejudice.
-
So far, I am enjoying it. I guess. Just a few observations... A lot less griefing than I expected. Got shot in the back of the head once while visiting Rhodes. Other than that, not much. Animals seem very scarce. Or at least, they don't seem to spawn in the same manner as story mode. The landscape seems a little desolate of life. Not sure what to think about the lack of crafting and absence of trappers. The game feels a little empty without it. In lieu of crafting everything has a rank requirement now and can be purchased. This just makes the game seem more like a shooter and less like an immersive world. To me. I have a feeling I am going to miss more than a few things from the Story Mode that made the game seem special in return for the competitive player ranking paradigm. Not sure at this point what I think overall. These are just a few observations from the handful of hours I've put in so far. Still, it's been pretty fun so far.
