Master Hunter Challange 2

I'm having real problems with this one. To begin with I find rabbits really hard to find, even where they're supposed to be around. I only came across maybe two or three after about an hour of searching. Secondly, once I found a "pristine" one and got it in the head with the varmint rifle I still only got a "good" pelt from it. So is it still an element of chance as to wether I get a "good" or "perfect" pelt, seeing as I did everything right. Are there any other tricks to this? As of right now I'm frustraded as **** over this, and it seems like it's going to take an eternity to clear this challange as things are going.

I found this link helpful. With a varmint rifle with one shot to the head it should give you a perfect pelt.

Yeah, I've looked at it. It seems I did everything right. As you say, one shot to the head with the varmint rifle should yield a perfect pelt. Except it didn't. Which is why I'm wondering 😕

Maybe try crafting small game arrows and try them.

I've found for rabbits you don't need to aim for the head. Just make sure they are 3 stars, lock on with the varmint rifle, and shoot. Should give you a perfect pelt. I found when I did try to aim for the head, I wasn't getting them either. Don't know what it works, but it did for me and that's how I completed the challenge.

Spoiler

Also as a side note, I would recommend progressing to the train robbery with John in order to unlock the ability to select where you place your dead eye if you haven't already. Makes hunting much easier.

I just ride around with my Varmint rifle always ready.  Every time a rabbit or other small game pops out I take a pot shot.  I managed to get the challenge this way without even really trying.  I pretty much hunt on the move every time I ride anywhere.  It makes travel a little slower, but not by much.  You shoot a lot of rubbish, but its just a numbers game, and by the time you've ridden around for a few hours doing other stuff you'll probably get them.

I've tended to notice that I get more stuff by good fortune than when I try - when I'm actively looking (rabbit and squirrel together!!) I rarely find.  It's almost as if the game knows and is trolling me - so I have to catch it off guard, getting it to think I'm doing something else :)

I ended up investing in a scope and has managed two pelts so far, both headshots. It's strange though that I didn't get a perfect pelt before if you don't really have to shoot them in the head. Now there's just the problem of finding the little buggars...

IIRC there's a spot or two on the map that shows where they tend to be more often than not.  But actually finding three-star animals has been the bane of my existence so far in the game.  I'm sick of my satchel looking like it was made by some hippy in the back of a VW bus.

Glad I am not alone. I swear it is like someone else is killing all the good animals off before I can get to them. I look like I just spent the last 2 years under a train bridge myself.

im struggling to find any 3 star animals but rabbits are becoming the burden of my life lol i went out the way to get the buck trinket and still no luck

Honestly when i go looking for 3 star rabbits I can never find them. But I took someone else advice in this thread and just went about my normal business riding around doing missions, and every time I see rabbits just draw down on them with my varmant rifle and take pot shots if they are 3 stars. I competed the challenge in five minutes doing it this waY. They weren't even head shots either.
