Has anyone watched how fast it grows and how it varies from one time to another?

I like the goatee look.  So I shaved and noticed several times that by the time I reach Valentine, he'll have a full beard again.  Yet I have road all the way to Saint Denis and it won't grow at all.

I think the first few levels of beard grow very fast, and the later ones are much slower. I know it won't grow the last two notches (or is it three?) without hair tonic, because I got an in-game message to that effect once I had a long beard.

It tells you once you reach max level, you need to use tonic after that.

I received the message for tonic after my goatee made it to level 4 it said it wouldn't grow anymore until I applied tonic. Now it's up to level 7. 🙂

Is there a way to keep it on the shorter side without having to shave so often? Someone on another site mentioned doing something with the tonic but that don't seem to work for me.

I have only shaved the "Chops" since I started the game, once my goatee made it to level 4 it maxed out, it told me it wouldn't get any longer without apply tonic. I'm going for the full blown goatee (ala ZZ TOP) so I'm applying tonic 🙂

9 and 10 can't be reached without tonic. Just buy a boatload of tonic and use one a day. My beard was full length after 6 days of playing real time. If your beard is already level 6/7 it should only take a day or two.
