Thanks i used the one Hosea gives you in the mission. 1 headshot it's dead. Spoiler Legendaries aren't like perfect hides. you can shoot them multiple times. I accidentally tried hunting the Legendary Bison with the varmint rifle, took me 4 or 5 shots to realize i had the wrong gun equipped.
MorganKane
Just bring your most powerful gun when hunting the legendary animals. I usually go with the Springfield (with scope and Express bullets) or the Bolt Action Rifle.
Volt
I think I was using some starting guns for that. I don't think anything was upgraded. I think I was using the standard ammo. Hosea may have given me some rifle, which I may have used, but I can't recall. For the actual fight ... Spoiler I recall having to shoot it many times. It charged me and was mauling me. My cats in my living room freaked out and I had to pause and turn the volume down to calm them down. Spoiler I thought I was going to die. But manage to shove it off. And shoot off several rounds at its head before it charged me again. I was a little surprised that the actual fight wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. Maybe that's coming from playing other games (Diablo 3) and thining Legendary was going to mean it has more hit points, higher resists, and hits harder. The animal did require more steps, with tracking, to eventually find it. And it does potentially get more complex with using scent concealers and bait, to help find it. I've only gotten a few legendary animals, but so far i've found them much more easy to take down than trying to get perfect pelts from regular animals. Spoiler Seems they have a pattern they stick to, if you chase it off and it runs, wait, it will come back to that spot and follow the pattern. I've never had a legendary take more than 2 shots, other than the Bison, but that's cause i was using the varmint rifle by mistake.

Anecdotally, I've found scent concealer to be a HUGE benefit, in that I have far less tracking to do than when I don't use it.
Looney Dan
I always just use the biggest most powerful gun I have for big game. It seems you get the most out of it when you figure the gun according to the size of the animal, as well as the ammo. You obviously don't want to just throw rocks at these bears. RustyLovesBeefarino
I think the legendaries were a bit of a letdown. Find three items to track, see animal, unload 5 bolt action rifle rounds in the face. It's way harder to find a 3* animal and get a perfect shot. The only legendary that made me soil my unmentionables was: Spoiler The legendary panther. Not only is that thing super fast and hides behind a tree, but once I found it some Lemoyne Raiders decided that now was the best time to fight me. So first I had to unload the aforementioned bolt action rifle rounds with the panthers fangs mere inches away from me and THEN I had to switch to my trusty Schofields and deal with those pesky raiders. That was a firefight for the history books folks.

Kormath
Actually weapon doesn't matter on Legendary, you won't ruin their hide like you would shooting a regular animal with the wrong gun trying get the perfect hide. Use your biggest gun, shoot it in the head till it drops. or the ass. doesn't matter.
