Anyone know how Twitch works?

A friend of mine wants to start gaming and doing live streams. He is going to have the whole summer off before he starts a new job in September so he would like to see if he can make a small earning through Twitch. I told him Youtube may help him make more money but then again, I am not sure how Twitch even works when it comes to earning. So yea, anyone know how that works?

This is a bit old, from a year ago so things may have changed but he sums up most of the things people ask. 

I never did it myself to earn but I did stream in the past. I prefer Youtube.

Twitch is a pain to earn on. You have to have so many more followers on there to earn vs Youtube. Most people start on Youtube then go to Twitch, not the other way around. It is harder to gain a following if you don't have a base to build off of already.

1. Set up an account

2. Pick a niche of games you would like to play

3. Upload fancy custom art to your channel

4. Sell your soul

5. Earn money

I think this works for Youtube as well. Number 4 is the key to success as well. You have to make sure you do this if you want to become popular.

It is a lot harder to make anything on Twitch now so honestly, I would tell your friend to not even bother. Youtube has a better chance at it but both are very hard to get a following on these days.

Yeah but it is not impossible. I have seen a few of my friends go from 100 subscribers on Youtube to 50k in only a few months. You just have to be consistent and be the content you would enjoy watching yourself so you can relate with your fans.
