MrPicard
Hey, I have a question. I played RDRO yesterday, Defensive Mode, I was fishing at my favorite salmon spot and then a griefer showed up and attacked me. I let him take one shot, and then a second one (because I really can't be bothered with this kind of thing, I just want to play the game in peace) but when he tried to run me down with his horse I grabbed my Bolt Action Rifle and shot him. The game then basically said "you defended yourself your hostility level won't be raised". I thought "cool, guess I can continue my peaceful fishing now"... but then, about half a minute later (I was literally just standing there with my fishing rod) the game suddenly said "hostility level raised". What did I do? Did the game decide to punish me for shooting the guy after all? I mean I really just defended myself and I thought R* said in one of the last updates that this issue has been fixed and that players in Defensive Mode who only defend themselves don't get a hostility level change? It all changed back to "low hostility level" after about two minutes or so, so it's not a big deal but it still bothered me because I hadn't DONE anything, AND the game had told me it wouldn't raise my hostility level and yet then did just that half a minute later. Is this a glitch? A known issue?
James Hickok_1837
Never happened to me before but i dont use Defensive stance so really cant tell. For me this looks like a bug or sth. What does happen tho and since last 3 days very often is i get the honor down icon and the game tells me that i commited a crime - murder most of the cases but havent done anything to anyone mostly while hunting or free roaming. Odd.
DNMNetTech
Every time I go to the post office in Valentine I get a notification when getting back on my horse that honor was lowered. I also get witness for horse theft. It's my horse. Why?
Dissention
To the OP. If you shoot at another player (not an NPC) and hit them while in defensive mode your hostility would increase slightly and it's supposed to (or at first used to) knock you into Offensive mode. It generally lasts for about 5 minutes or less. Does it knock you into Offensive mode most of the time, no. So if it becomes a back and forth slugfest, with no one parlaying, you can spend 45 minutes trading blows back and your hostility will increase steadily but will still go back to low in about 10 minutes if you have high honor. I never tried or have any interest in griefing anyone so I don't know how long it would take to get to High hostility. What R* eliminated was the Bounty/tax for self defense. You will always get a hostility increase offensive or defensive mode for shooting another player, self defense or not

Okay. I'll keep this in mind, thank you very much for the info, this was really helpful! I guess next time I'll just leave the session if a griefer wants to play. (I have absolutely ZERO love for griefers, I would much rather just leave than to acknowledge their presence by fighting back. I do applaud the idea of Defensive Mode - it made me come back to the game, - but I still wish R* allowed Invite Only sessions.) And yes, I have the highest honor, which is probably why my hostility level was back to low after just a minute or two. The game did also knock me into Offensive Mode tho, I think it's supposed to do that once your hostility level rises. 6 hours ago, James Hickok_1837 said: Never happened to me before but i dont use Defensive stance so really cant tell. Odd. I have that happen to me as well, twice in the past three weeks or so, once when I just passed an NPC on the "road" and once when I got on my own horse in Saint Denis the game suddenly claimed I was a horse thief. I was like "lolwat?".

I realized when I accidentally whistled when trying to open my satchel and my trusty steed came running after me. I figured since I was already accused of horse thievery I might as well make a couple runs of double sturgeon to the butcher.
jamesg
I have stopped at a dead body (NPC) and been accused of murder. I have got on my own horse and been accused of horse theft (defo MY horse). Been shot at defended myself and turned red. And while I am at it I would like to make my apologies for the apparent trolling by my character during the last few days (my mate thought it would be funny to hi-jack my account and go on a spree to lower my honour level). It doesn't happen TOO often so it's not THAT much of an issue but still, I'd rather not be called a horse thief and lose honor for getting on my own horse. lol
Harlock1796
Miscarriages of justice are part of life. A guy comes round the corner, sees someone laying shot to death on the ground, another guy standing over him with a gun. Until Wild West CSI get there, it does look kinda suspicious. The most obvious answer is often the right one.
Ill.i.am86
My major issue with hostility is ill play defensive, someone will try shooting me or kill my horse, i then respond because i can freeaim kill effectively, im then hostile... but people see hostile as a target in most situations, problem is i dont die easy, i play slippery bastard full sensitivity fps2 settings, so ill destroy my attackers leaving me permanently stuck in a hostile mode. Literally ill login start say hunting, defensive mode is not available then someone will spring from nowhere and test there luck. I think defensive mode should allow no damage between players then people will stop targeting them.
