What’s role play like?

You know, it's kind of funny.   I know RP has its fan base especially on PC but to me it's kinda goofy seeing people putting on an act to the extent that they do in some cases (like in GTAO).  Especially in those situations where participants aren't allowed to break character, have to act like they are really in the virtual world they create, create backstories they have to stick to, etc.  Where they go beyond the boundaries of the game / story / mechanics.

....and then there are games that tend to suck players further into that virtual world on their own.  It's not necessarily RP in the way we are discussing but simply playing the game.  I recently had that experience in DayZ where encounters and dialogue with other players can seem to be a little more tied into what's going in the game than IRL.  Most conversations I have are regarding food, health, inventory status, navigation, trade, threats/extortion, etc.  Thing is, we're not pretending it's not a game.

Not sure if that makes sense but that's kind of my take on it.  Personally, I'm not a fan of RP'ing in the sense of having it be a requirement. I guess it's just a matter of whether it feels forced or natural and a lot of that has to do with design.  ....and to what extent.  In a way, many games themselves are essentially RP experiences.

I get exactly what your saying, especially where the games immersion basically makes it RP’ing. In the vast open world of RDRO I find myself trying to RP, like when hunting I’ll play it out in the realest way I can and I have a lot of fun doing it. But when it comes to RP with other ppl and  in the more serious ways ppl play I just feel like it would be to weird & uncomfortable lol. Thanks for commenting, I wasn’t sure if I was the only one who thought that RP had a certain stigma with it. And yea I guess it’s all in what your comfortable with. 🤙

Well it most definitely has a stigma to it with some folks (dare I say most) who look at RP as a little weird to say the least (like me ;) ).  .....but again, I think it depends on just how far it's taken because people do take on roles in games already.  For me, it gets plain weird when people go beyond the structure of the game like they do in GTA RP servers on PC.  These folks create worlds where they assume roles as cops, average citizens, bad guys, etc.  They have back stories and stay in character as they interact with each other.

I don't know about most others, but when playing a game with friends, we sometimes pass the time talking about real life or game mechanics, updates and the like.  We are not pretending that we are actually the characters we are.

On the other hand, when playing milsim games like SQUAD (for example), simply playing the game conversations might sound like RP'ing (and to an extent perhaps it is), but it's part of the game and the way you need to communicate with one another to be successful.  .....it's far from games like CoD. Some of those sessions can actually sound almost like real engagements.

That kind of gameplay I don't mind as it simply feels natural to me.  .....but then again, these folks are not pretending that they are not playing the game.  They will ask each other how to perform certain actions, talk about respawns, glitches, aspect of the game (as a game), real life, etc.  ......whereas in strict RP-specific gaming, it is common that such talk is verboten.

So the idea of role play in games is intriguing, but at the same time it has a stigma with it. I’ve personally never tried role play. I guess I’m wondering if anyone here has in RDR2?

if you're referring to groups/posses/ etc.. then there are different types of RP that I've noticed.

there is the "Life RP" which I assume is the hardcore be in character at all times and play the game as if you were an actual citizen in the Red dead world or be a Lawmen/robber etc... Some groups like this even want you to make a new character or act as if you're current character is a different person once dead (rare). I cant speak much on that since I've never joined one

there is the "Crew RP" which is essentially crew that engage in PvP wars, alliances, ranks, meetings, ceremonies, promotions etc..

there is the "chat RP" which involves you usually downloading Discord and all of your RP situations happen via the App, I'm assuming that also means you interact in game with each other but also have to type it all out in the chat if they do a combination of both, some literally only do the Discord.

there is the "MILSIM RP" which is 99% military style crews that have the crew RP element as well as the Life RP element except you're to act like a soldier in the military including rank, uniform, language and what not.

then there is the simple RP that people just enjoy playing their character as if it was truly them in game from speaking like them to holding values etc..

thats as much as i know; hell i might be completely wrong since i only really engage in crew RP and im horrible at acting so i can never really be in character (i play as a native) but do try to hold the values as a native would like respecting the land or animals, hunting with a bow etc... Some crews/posse's are a mix of each category but these are usually the main ones i see being advertised.

never could understand how you tie in RPing with a video game.

I grew up playing D&D and roleplaying those characters, not to the extent of some of he LARPers but we were in character fully while we played, except for smoke break time or call for pizza dinner time ;)

Hey man! I’m relatively new to the concept but am trying to rp a little Lakota tribe west of the Dakota river, do you mind if I add you? No commitment necessary! Just need to make some native friends!
