What ONE thing do you think will help online the most?
Netnow66 replied to madfretter's topic in Red Dead Online
I don't want to have to settle for "Safe zones, like churches and sheriffs offices - give people more chance to hide from griefers." You seem to already acknowledge not only that there is a problem but that you have no way to stop it. Separate servers would solve the problem. I'm ready for a drastic change in what takes place online. I say this after just spawning from a mission and getting popped in the head with a revolver. Of course, I feel Rockstar is probably going to make changes more in scope with what you want. But the topic is what I think will help. I think it's the separate servers. -
Thanks for the guide! Once things settle down anti griefing-wise, I'll take more advantage of it. I've played all of the main missions (I have 100%) and I basically use Quick Join to play the whole game now, using Story Mission On Call to replay certain missions that I like or to go into Showdown (when I need to be reminded how much better other players are). As many times as I've replayed Kill Them All, Each and Every One, I think I've gotten maybe $20 in cash at the most. Are my cash winnings so low because I'm so bad or because my Honor is as low as it can go? (don't be kind, be honest...) And in that area where the missions are listed, sometimes the option to replay them is on screen, sometimes not. What exactly makes the replay option stay highlighted for those missions? When they're not highlighted, I have to go in and out of the Quick Join lobbies until I find a mission I want to replay.

I didn't want to mention paying for decent servers because of the heat Rockstar gets for gold selling (I don't plan to purchase any myself) but if that is what it would take to play in (what I consider) a decent fashion, I think I might go for it (though I think it's really Rockstar's place to do something). In one of the earlier Battlefield games, some guy had a server that ONLY played this one map 24/7 as far as I know. Whenever I logged on, there I would go. I'd have been willing to drop him some coins for doing that. I see no real difference here. -

There might be but I guess i'm a little impatient at this point. Even when I heard about Red Dead single player, I only really wanted online where I could fashion my own character and my story. At this stage in the game, I say start with something that we know will work. But I guess I'll take whatever Rockstar will offer at this point. -

Oh I understand now But, the main stranger missions aren't assassination missions. By the time I got a player assassination mission (and I didn't realize it was another player until it was too late), the person that gave it to me wasn't a "stranger"--I had visited him/her once and the person had a name. I've only gotten two so far and the second one I just ignored once I realized it was a player. As I said, I've had two since I've been playing so it's not something I'd personally miss. And something that could be easily removed from the mission roster, in my opinion. But, no, nonconsensual player assassination missions would not exist on PvE servers if it was up to me. On another note, the first time I played a quick match team battle, I (still a bad to mediocre player) learned something that good players probably don't know. When I panicked as a player approached, I tried to shoot him before realizing he was on my team. My gun wouldn't shoot. The mechanics of the game don't allow you to shoot someone who is on your team (unless I was glitching like hell). I say flick that switch and gimme a server that views all players as being on "my team." -

The exact same way. I don't recall a stranger mission where I had to kill other players. Is there a mission in particular you have concerns about? -

This still seems like the simplest method to me so I'm backing this one. Everything available on one would be available on the other. The only difference being we can't kill other players on PvE servers. That would get the job done in the simplest fashion. Simple and to the point, no reason to concern yourself with what might or might not work. That would work, plain and simple. -
I hadn't seen that datamined copy before. It can't get here soon enough as far as I'm concerned. I'm willing to give just about anything a try to avoid the madness existing online now. The most fun I've had in this game was the one time I found myself in a lobby alone. I missed the social aspect but the freedom to fish, hunt and just explore more than made up for it. I didn't want to risk losing the lobby so I didn't even try to invite anyone, But a private lobby that would allow numbers of invited gamers would be perfect.

Someone sniping me while I'm minding my own business or murdering me when I'm on a trip to the store isn't what I thought online was supposed to be about. As someone already suggested, you do know there are modes within the game to accommodate those who are just here to kill one another. Interesting that there are modes to accommodate those who want to wreak havoc upon other players but no modes the opposite of those. Maybe because it's a beta. If bullying is supposed to be part of the game, then so be it. But let there be consequences. There are really none at this point. Some friends and are submitting to Rockstar that griefers be charged 1/2 their money and gold every time they kill someone. The victim would get half of the half. Or Rockstar could drop their level by ten for every offense and they would lose the capability to use anything that you have ranked up to get accordingly. I guess I can accept a system where griefing and bullying are allowed--but there should be some consequences. There are none.

I actually like the concept of the ability cards. And, yes, if I was a PvP player, I would definitely use them to cover up my inadequate player killing skills. I saw a YT video of a guy getting shot repeatedly (looked like some headshots also) but he eventually headshot the other guy. But I'm definitely a PvE person so I plan to only enhance abilities that cater to that.
-
I haven't really done any investing into ability cards yet as I'm hoping for a PvE environment (at some point) and I'd rather not spend/invest in PvP abilities. I guess there's no way to know for sure if Rockstar will let us do a reset/refund once the anti griefing measures are implemented? Is anyone else waiting because of the cost?

If I had run in to you online, I'd have been dead. There is a skill level involved when some of the griefing solutions are mentioned. And I'm not that good a player. I'm so bad a player that along with accidentally punching my horse on occasion, once I tried to wave at a player and mistakenly pulled my pistol and shot at his feet. I immediately turned my back to him to try and show that I'm not hostile. This guy, whoever he was, was such a class act that even though he now had his gun drawn, he didn't shoot me. I finally figured got the wave figured out, but did it with my back to him. And I'm such a PvEer that I actually had the drop on someone coming all the way across a small river toward me but I was giving him the benefit of the doubt. Yeah, he popped me good.

Scale the missions according to number of players and their levels
Netnow66 replied to Joe's topic in Red Dead Online
Not sure of the answer to the original post but I have a question of my own. I have 100% on the missions but the ability to replay specific missions is greyed out on the page where they are listed in my menu. What activates the option to replay specific missions? What I do now is quick play (or whatever it's called) and I keep doing that until I get a mission that I want to play. Thanks. -
There is a YT video of a player stealing a cart from an NPC (player said you have to get a cart that closes in the back so your cargo can't fall out). He then went on to put a bunch of pelts and big fish into the cart. This is something I plan on doing, but only after some anti griefing mechanics are in place. It's one thing to lose two carcasses to griefing players. It would be quite another to lose a whole cart full.
-
Same here. I had no idea it was another player until I got there to kill him. However, I soon found out when I tracked him down and he and members of the posse he was in ended my life pretty quickly. If it was an NPC, I would have retried. But I was so shocked that the game mechanic had me become one of the griefing asses I hate online, I just server jumped.
-
More pig stories... As I was killing three pigs, a shirtless character named An_HonestMan or something like that showed up. I continue working but prepare myself to be shot in the head by this half naked player. I finish up and had to leave one of the carcasses, of course. Still no headshot. My horse and I run back to town straight to the butcher. I go into the sale graphic. When I come out, there he is, waving at me and the carcass was at my feet. Then he just walked away.

Then I sure wish Microsoft would take an official stance on this. This would be worth me buying it on my Microsoft box. The fact that they might lose the ability to play, even through Xbox Live, is more of a deterrent than anything I've seen from Rockstar at this point. Has anyone else reported players and gotten similar results?

I got killed today, right after logging into New Austin. After it happened, I do what I normally do, go to another server. Same thing happened as soon as I logged in the second time. I decided now might not be a good time, so I logged off for now. But that's what I usually do, just jump from server to server until I can at least settle in for a bit. At this point, I wish Rockstar would let us know if there will eventually be PvE servers or some way to flag myself like I do my camp. I'd rather not keep investing my time in the game if something such as that is not planned. I experienced one of the reasons I don't just walk away from this game the other day. I did a stranger mission with a cut scene. Someone told me not to finish the mission and when the timer appears to let it run out and see what happens. The timer ran out and I pressed left to see how many people were there in the lobby with me. There was no one. My name was the only one showing. I hunted for about two and a half hours, stacking more skins than I normally would because I had no worries about being killed and losing them. Just minding my own business, walking the areas around me. This is closer to the experience that I thought Red Dead 2 Online was going to be. The constant looking over my shoulder isn't relaxing at all. I would have played all day but I had to be somewhere. I was really pissed off that I couldn't play longer.
-
Done. And I will encourage those I play with to contact them also. I really hope we can get something done. I really like what this game has to offer so far--except for getting killed for minding my own business.
-
I've just been killed for the fifth or sixth time this morning. I got up early, minded my business and started farming and hunting. I don't mind the grind--I do mind getting murdered repeatedly when I'm minding my own business. Not 100% sure if I'm going to continue playing at this point, at least in the beta. Here is a suggestion that someone gave to me to avoid the clowns parked around an area. If I roll up to an area and think there's going to be trouble, I go into the menu and select free roam again. I've been told that puts you on another server where, hopefully, there are at least fewer knuckleheads around. All I know is that it worked the majority of times I did it this morning, at least long enough for me to accomplish much of what I wanted.
-
I don't care when a game I consider bad encourages griefing. It's only when one that I really like does it. I'm hoping that by the time this gets out of beta there will be servers or some other accommodation for those who don't wish to be harassed while enjoying this game.
