Hey guys, I've never played Red Dead & contemplating buying it. However I'm curious, do I need to play the first one? Just I hate missing storylines or are the two independent of one another? Thanks in advance. Also is the game honestly worth it? I know this is a biased forum but I don't delve into new franchises often.

You can play Red Dead Redemption 2 first because its a prequel to the original Red Dead Redemption. After you beat the new game, then you can play the original Red Dead Redemption.

Also, yes the game is worth it, its a must buy in my books. The story is amazing on its own.

Personally, I would play RDR1 first simply because of the advancements they made in RDR2.

If R* had made a remastered version of RDR before RDR2 as release, I would have been all over it.  I played it on PS3 and really liked it.  However, after playing RDR2, I simply couldn't bring myself to replay RDR1.

I played a but of it on PS Now a couple weeks before RDR2 released since they had a 15 day free trial.  It certainly felt dated and even more so now.  ......YMMV.

I never played the first 2, but I'm loving this game!

I was going to hold off on buying it, but ended up winning my copy. After playing for over 24 hours, I know I definitely would've paid for it. I actually just ordered the guide from Amazon earlier because I'm enjoying it so much. Absolutely no bias (I joined this forum to keep in touch with a few people, not really for the game) here. In my opinion, it's like a combination of skyrim (or fallout), assassins creed, and gta.

Just plan a couple hours of limited game play in the beginning. It plays out like a interactive movie and could be rough if you're not expecting it. After that it's all open world fun.

Update: just started playing 30 minutes ago, this game off of first impressions is phenomenal, outstanding graphics. Stunning textural detail and physics. Thank **** I bought it lol.

I picked up the first one for Xbox, it's backwards compatible it was on sale this spring for around $7 in the xbox store. I really enjoyed it and that is what made me excited for this one.

I bought this one and MAN this is one of the first games in a LONG LONG time I can happily recommend to my buddies I would not hesitate to buy again at full price. That's hard to say for a lot of games today where normally I wait until later for them to go on sale. I've put some many hours into Red Dead 2 it's been well worth the asking price.

As far as graphics go I felt the same way as you when I started playing, this game feels like a movie! Most game start out looking super nice, then the screen zooms in and you take over controls and it doesn't quite look as crisp and fancy, not this game when you start playing it looks the same, like a freaking western movie! I'm loving!

Good call. Yeah, you don't need to have played the first Red Dead Redemption to enjoy this one, but having knowledge of the story in the first game will increase enjoyment in this one. There are lots of subtle details and conversations that have a lot of extra weight if you know what comes after. For instance, there is a scene in RDR2 where you learn to fish that has some amazing emotional symmetry with a scene at the very end of RDR1.

Also there are some jokes that you won't realize are jokes if you aren't familiar with the first game.

I agree with Kean_1 that Red Dead Redemption 1 is going to be hard to go back and play after 2. I played RDR1 start to finish 3 times over the last 8 years. It is still a great game, but the gameplay improvements in RDR2 are going to be difficult to lose. You might be better off watching one of those 20-30 minute Red Dead Redemption 1 recap videos on Youtube. Personal choice.
