My horse...

I was finishing up a train robbery in Annesburg like usual. When I finished up, I found a horse other than my Missouri Fox Trotter with me, and the saddle(which was upgraded but now set to default) was all the way in Saint Denis. I went to a stable and now my Fox Trotter is completely replaced by a shitty horse along with my upgraded saddle being lost... um, what the hell Rockstar? Was I punished for being too bad or something?

He will be missed. R.I.P

You're horse probably died...

He didn’t though, not to my knowledge at the least! I took a train to SD from emerald ranch and I was reading my book to pass time for the train to start moving. I’m sure they were just standing there by the train like they always do. The horse never spawns on the tracks, always on the side, so the chances of the train killing the horse seems very unlikely... but at the same time, very likely. Ah well... I’ll just try to get another with the SD method

I don't KNOW that it died, that's just what I'm assuming.

Take it as a lesson that YOU SHOULD ALWAYS MANUALLY SAVE before AND after significant events. I save every few minutes to avoid the hassle you're going through now.

Unless you hitch your horse or stable it, it more often than not will attempt to follow the train as you ride it.

The same thing happened to me when

Spoiler

I got on the train to talk to Billy Midnight.  My horse tried to follow the train and died (probably from a fall).

Like @Truth said:  always, ALWAYS manually save your game either directly before starting a mission/activity/raid or immediately after acquiring a unique item/pelt/trinket.  Mistakes happen.  I was able to reload my game and my horse was fine.  Lesson learned: I tied him to a hitching post and stole a wagon to get back to him.

You’re right. I always manually save after I finish the robbery but I should save beforehand, too. That’s good. Luckily I got a Gray Rose Arabian from the SD method, so that’ll do until I get another Fox Trotter. Thanks again. This goes to you too, @BropolloCreed79

I read from some online guide, that your horse can get stolen if it's not hitched. I assume this doesn't apply during a mission or jumping off your horse to get on a carriage/horse/train. But I'm not sure. I have had one of my first 2 horses die, from jumping off something too high. As mentioned above, you can manually save to protect your horse 2from that.

Now I'm pissed.  I've had the legendary white horse from lake Isabella for a week now, real time.  I'm trying the sharpshooter 8 challenge and I die in Valentine.  Horse when I revive and whistle is my very first starting horse that I sold.  WTF?!?!

can't you load it to a previous save where you actual horse shows.... my game sometimes tries to play tricks on me, the game replaces my usual horse with a shitty horse, using the same custom Mane, same custom Tail and also same Name, but is a total different horse, the only fix I was able to do is re-load a previous game until the right horse shows

Unfortunately I had forgotten to save for a while, and right after I died it did an auto save.  I could go back to yesterday when I started after work but I don't want to do all that over.  I'll see if I can play the horse lottery in saint Denis and get a good one

So after losing my horse, and killing everyone in Valentine in a fit of rage (actually made me feel a little bit better lol) i ran away to Rhodes and stole a couple carriages to sell to pay off my bounty in New Haven, ended up getting a $30 bounty there for vehicle theft.  Yes i forgot to wear my mask.  After selling the carriages i paid the bounty in Emerald Station and went back to Valentine and checked the stables again for my horse.  Legendary i lost wasn't there, but i did have the first wild race horse i caught in the stables for sale at $0.  That was a shock.  I caught that horse rode it for like an hour IRL and then found the legendary i had been using for the last 8 days.  For all i knew that horse was still hitched up at that old fallen down shack by Lake Isabella.  i had totally forgotten about it.  So at least i'm not stuck with the starter horse now.

I put in a ticket about losing the DLC warhorse with R* and about the glitch that took away my Legendary Arabian.

Here's their response -

Thank you for contacting Rockstar support.

I understand your concern that your warhorse got replaced  in RDR2.

I am glad you have contacted me and I am going to offer you all necessary information needed to resolve this.

However I would like to inform you that the “War Horse” is DLC content, if you have pre-ordered the Red Dead Redemption 2, then, unlike other horses that experience permanent death if left untreated, the War Horse can be "purchased" again from the stables for 0$.

I would request you to first complete the clear cache steps then go look back at the stables in Valentine. You will be able to retrieve your horse back from there.

In an attempt to resolve these issues, I would like to try resetting the local user profile settings for the game.

You do not have to worry about losing any progress, as this simply clears some temporary files associated with the game.

I have the steps to clear the cache below.
1.    Fully shut down your console.
2.    After 30 seconds of the console being shut down, restart the console.
3.    Launch RDR2.
4.    When launching RDR2, wait until a black screen appears after the initial splash art has disappeared, and hold down L1+R1 throughout the opening scenes.
5.    If successful, you will be prompted to re-calibrate your language and brightness options.

If the above article does not resolve the issue you are encountering, please let us know.

Further I would require you to verify whether you have installed day 1 patch of RDR2.

You can see the build number as follows:
- open the “Pause” menu
- go to “Settings”
- Bottom right hand side should show a numeric code like this “Build XXXX.X”

Kindly sent me this build number to verify it.

Happy gaming and enjoy Red Dead Redemption 2!

If you have any other concern feel free to contact us back.

Not much help really but that is a cool tip i didn't know to clear game cache.  Nothing about my missing Arabian though.  But i did find my war horse for sale at lunch today after doing this.

Then I emailed back about the glitch-lost Arabian.

Thank you for getting back to us.

I follow that you lost your Legendary Arabian horse in RDR2.

I am going to help you right away.

I would suggest few points regarding the missing White Arabian.

1. Please check the horse in the camp, you might find it.

Nope, i've already studied all the horses in camp, and tried to steal Micah's horse.  Unfortunately you can't.

Quote

2. Make sure that horse is not killed.

Well, i'm not sure about that because I died on Main St. as i call it in Valentine (where the stores are), and my Legendary was left back in the auction area.  Hopefully they didn't go kill my horse after they killed me.

3. Make sure you are looking into the same stable were horse was saved.

ummm say what?  you have to save your horse in the stable?  Yeah so i never saved my Legendary.  Insert forehead smack smiley here.  Now I feel like an idiot lol.  They haven't answer my question if the Legendary did die will it respawn so i can go tame it again.  Or if i can go tame it again from the glitch and me not knowing i could, or had to, save it in the stable.

This is what i got instead -

Thank you for replying back to us.

I understand that you are worried about losing your Arabian horse.

I  request you to try loading the previous saved data where you had your Arabian horse.

Further try to to develop the bonding between the character and horse by feeding, patting and scrubbing the horse.

Hope the above information helps you in recovering your Arabian white horse.

So looks like i have to reset my game back a few days to a previous save point.  No big deal, i'm not that far along anyway, i've had my fun in the world hunting and building up my vilian rep, and the challenges.  OMG! the challenges!  Is the Legendary horse worth that?  hell yeah  not to mention i had hella fun doing the challenges.

Lesson learned - save your horses in the stables, they will (supposedly) return there if lost/stolen/killed and hopefully glitch-lost.

That's a good tip about the DLC warhorse. Mine got killed after a random encounter, after making progress with some Bandit Challenges. I had not saved my progress though. And used an earlier save from that evening to get my horse back. But had to redo all the progress I made in the Bandit challenges. If I only knew.

I heard that the SD horse cheese can lead to your legendary being randomly replaced by a knackered nag. Seems that's what happened to you. :P

That's what you get for exploiting, you exploiter. I could never get that place to work. Every time it's Walkers and Morgans. :(

exploiting what?  i'm lost there on what i exploited.

I did get my legendary back though :D  had to restore my game from the 11th.  Which was no big deal, i haven't progressed past the opening of chapter 3 yet in the story line, so i lost nothing there,  now i just have to do the fun of the challenges again and hunt down 3 or 4 perfect hides.  kinda funny, i felt like i had really done a lot in those 4 days, but then i restore back and hadn't really done much but 6 sharpshooter and 3 bandit challenges and spend money on paying off my bounties lol.
