Horseman Challenge 9 is bugged

This challenge is straight up bullsh*t. I've done it correctly several times and it's still not completing. Sub 15-minute runs, haven't touched water or fallen off my horse, starting at the stable north of Van Horn, going through Van Horn itself and ending in Blackwater. 

Whoever came up with the moronic requirements for these challenges needs to pay for the medical bills for my RSI this is causing.

I’ve done this twice on two different play throughout and had no problem getting it. You can easily do it in under 15 mins. 

Double check the route you are taking as some times there are gullies with wet mud that count as water. 

Ride the rails from Flatneck then head to Owanjila dam to avoid all the water.

that's how i did it.  and i'm only in chapter 3   ran from lawmen all the way from the border to Blackwater.  

Get a better horse, use stimulants, avoid mud/rain/etc.

That’s it then. I don’t believe it is possible to complete the challenge until the Epilogue.

you might be right.  I went home a bit ago at lunch to look at my progress.  My attempt on this last night didn't succeed.  Must have been something else popping up in the notification box as i died.

I made 3-4 attempts before deciding it wasn't worth the hassle. I figured something later in the story would make travel to Blackwater a little easier.

I finally had a successful attempt today on what must've been my 10th run. I've spent an embarrassing amount of hours and repeated attempts to get this. I'm in CH3 so it's definitely possible to do this before later in the story.

My successful run was seemingly no different from any of my previous runs, I really don't have any advice for others trying to do this other than cross your fingers and hope whatever ****ed up algorithm they have for this challenge counts your run.

I think the puddles that appear in the train tracks count as water if you run in them, same as the puddles that are in the ground at Van Horn... but I've seen videos of people running right through those puddles and it still counting so I have no idea anymore. Just to be safe I'd avoid all water, no matter what. Take the time to go around puddles no matter how small, that's the only thing I can think of that ****s over otherwise smooth runs.

Puddles will fail you, at least they did when i did my first run from Strawberry to St. Denis.  The idea is to

Ride the train tracks to Riggs Station, then run up through strawberry to Owanjila Dam, then south to tall trees and east to Blackwater.  If you cut from Riggs and go east and then south you have to cross the Montana River and you fail.

Stables are outside of Van Horn technically. From the stables, head into town, once Van Horn pops up on the top of the screen, you're good to go.

I'm wanting to try this but I'm only in chapter 4, I'm weird like that and want to complete all the challenges, unlock all the trapper stuff, etc...My question is how on earth do you make to even close to blackwater? 

I tried to go hunting there ONCE and I didn't make it but 100 feet inside the "wanted dead or alive" border and BOOM about 12 bounty hunters just appeared out of nowhere and shotgunned me to death in about 2 seconds.

How do you make it to blackwater and survive? Do you just have to cross the dam/border or do you have to make it all the way to town?

You do cross at the dam and head south, then east.  But you're wanted Dead or Alive in New Austin throughout the whole game, until you get to (I think) the Epilogue. 

I think it's correct that rain can cause you to fail.  I did this challenge several times before I realized getting off your horse fails the challenge.  Then I did it twice without getting off, first time failed (maybe it rained cuz i didnt cross any stream, mud pits, etc.) and I gave up for a bit, then tried again and succeeded.  Pretty grueling, and you need plenty of the horse stamina tonics (4-5 per attempt, I think) to make it in time.

Tried this last night and died, lucky lawman just inside the border got a head shot.

Tips to it are in the Challenges thread.  You'll want to have a stock of the potent horse stamina tonics, and got to the stable right before to get the golden health and stamina cores for the horse for $5.  And you need a fast horse, fully bonded.
