Playstation 5?

So was just reading this rather interesting prediction from Eurogamer: we might still see a Playstation 5 this year.

Could Sony be releasing its next-gen PlayStation in 2018? That's the notion put forward by Maquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian Thong, cited in a recent edition of The Wall Street Journal. But is the time right to replace PlayStation 4? And what kind of hardware could Sony conceivably deliver next year?

First up, it's worth pointing out that Thong is credited with predicting PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro, making him a creditable source. However, a comprehensive look through Google's news archive doesn't appear to show any prediction for the Pro that predates Kotaku's initial PlayStation 4.5 exclusive. Also worth pointing out is that Thong's prediction is nothing new - he made the same claims about a prospective PlayStation 5 launch last September. Did he predict the PS4 Slim? It certainly looks like it, but then again, Sony has made physically smaller iterations of every one of its previous consoles. That said, his CV certainly looks first-class and clearly, he knows his onions.

Of course I doubt it after reading recently about how well the PS4 is doing so while I have no doubt they're working on the next console I don't think we'll see it as soon as this year yet.

Now as I don't have a PS4 yet I'd love to see a PS5 release before Red Dead Redemption 2 (so that I can get a new generation console and a new generation game to play on it at the same time).

BONUS ROUND: Some crazy concept images just for kicks

Sony has so many 1st parties lined up for 2018 and beyond and the PS4 is doing so well in sales that releasing another console woud be quite unnatural. We just had the Pro and the Slim last year. Also it would make this generation really short - 5 years.

2018 seems pretty unlikely. I massive number of PS gamers would also be very pissed off having just bought a PS4 Pro. I think they could keep the PS4 Pro running until at least 2019/2020 and probably beyond before needing to upgrade. VR hasn't even become mainstream (or anywhere near it). I'm calling BS by Eurogamer on this one.

I don't think the next consoles will come out till 2020. Seeing at we just got the new systems in 2013. The other two (PS3 and X360) came out in 06 and it was 7 years before a new one. I think they will stick to releasing every 7 years now.

I agree with this. The earliest they will do it would be 7 years which would make it 2020. Seems like a good year too. Easy to advertise off of as well. I would imagine the next consoles have VR systems included. So you can see 2020... get it? I am horrible. lol

I didn't even think of that! LOLOL! No that is actually a really good point. I think using the VR systems to play with the 2020 vision is a good and punny way of advertising it.

PS5 wont be coming out till at the very least. 2020. I can't see them doing it sooner. There is too much money to be made on PS4 yet. I know a lot of people wouldn't mind seeing a new one this early but to me, it would be too soon and it would hurt their sales.

Would be nice if they did release a new console that was fully backwards compatible with all PS4 games. They did say that changing the architecture would allow this while destroying backwards compatibility for PS3 games but of course PS Now will still be more valuable for them too I think. The best would be a console that can play PS3, PS4 and PS5 games all at the same time.

Agreed. If they can some how work out a way to allow the PS5 ti play all the games from the past it would be a market super hero for many gamers. Specials those of us who still do enjoy playing games on the PS3. I like older games and will always play games I enjoy into the dirt, even if they are 6+ years old.

Hey why not. I am waiting for memes to become a staple advertisement for the gaming industry. I would expect the next installment of systems to really push it to the next level as well.
