What year will RDR2 begin in?

Doing a little bit of math here...

Marston was born in 1873. I am guessing the game will take place in 1896 which is 15 years before the first one. I am going to base this on Dutch not being much younger in terms of looks. This would place John right at 23 as well. That is a good age to get involved in this gang. He is young enough to have wit but dumb enough to be conned. So I can see it being 15 years prior to the last game - 1896.

I was thinking around 1890 myself. Just because it started sooner doesn't mean we won't progress through several years. Say they decide to do one more where it is about John being in the gang, this one will run us right to the point of him joining I would imagine.

Dutch looks younger but not THAT younger like you said. So I would say at most, it is 20 years before RDR's story took place. If I had to guess and exact year, I would say 1891. Just have a hunch there.

Dutch was 53 when he died in 1911. If the game takes place 20 years before that, he would be 33. Looks older here to me. I would say he is about 38-40. Based on that it would mean it is no more than 15 years prior to RDR's 1911. That would be 1896 and he would be 38. For good measure I would say he is 40 here though so 1898 is my guess.

@DarkSharkhas the right idea I think. Seems like it is back but not back that far. I would peg it to start around 1892 and 1898. Somewhere in there just seems right.

I can't see it starting in the 1900's given the year of RDR but it can't start so far back because like mentioned, the characters from the last game don't look much younger. I would say 15 years, 20 max. Whatever that works out to be, I don't know. I am horrible at math.

Such an absolute waste by staying with the later dates, it's like doing a Vietnam War game and starting in late 1974. I'd much rather see roving AI bands of plains Indians hunting buffalo than a Model A truck driving down the street.

It is a prequel and likely leads into Marston joining the game so it isn't going to be too many years earlier than the last one. They can always do RDR3 in the future and go back further with different characters.

Does it really matter? I mean it will obviously be starting before the last one and may or may not lead up to John's story. 

I guess this is something to talk about though. We do have time to kill here. Stupid delay. I will guess 1891.

I think you are very close if not spot on given the evidence in the trailers and the history of the last game. I am fine with this but I would love to see them do another RDR game in the future that goes back further. Maybe back to the early 1800's.

You were the closest. In the new trailer, they said 1899. I am not sure how I feel about it just yet but I am excited to see what they make of the story.

That is impressive you came that close. I must have missed this thread. I enjoyed reading through it and seeing the reasonings.
