Accidentally shot someone near Valentine

I have been playing the game for 3 days or so and am still in Valentine. The housing development below valentine is where I encountered the O’Driscoll gang fighting some family, so I killed the gang and went to talk to one of the remaining. Unfortunately, I accidentally shot one of the family members instead of engaging them and now they will not talk to me. Keep in mind this is after 2 full days of playing. Is there some way to fix this or have I permanently ended this quest? Also, there is a man in the main saloon who is cursing out the others and looks like he is someone of interest, is he? Or is it just an unusually detailed NPC (he wears the raccoon hat I think). On a side note, I am loving this game. I have spent most of my time riding around with the mini-map off, which has made me memorize the local roads in and around valentine. It’s awesome,  and I have hardly touched the story. Instead, I feed the camp and go into town every few in-game nights to bathe and eat, it’s all so amazing. I never imagined myself enjoying this so much, since I am the type of player that usually likes to keep things moving but at least for now I am going for 100% immersion and it’s paying off. Hope you all are enjoying this as much as I am, and I know that the pacing of the game is not for everyone.

If you shot the people you are trying to help, and the game automatically saves, I think the quest is no longer valid. I'm not 100% certain.

Take it as a lesson and do frequent manual saves!

I ****ed up a few things before I decided to do it. The sooner you get into the habit of saving after anything important happens, the better.

I messed up doing this as well and I wish I had saved beforehand. I plan on going through the game again so it isn't a big deal but I learned my lesson for sure lol

That mountain man is "Jon", he's a "Stranger" from the Ranters, Ravers strands. If you stand near him long enough he will start a fight with you. The goal is simply to knock him out and you can then take his rare hat and keep it. Good luck knocking him out! LOL, I've only done it once out of 10 times or so, but I never knew I could take his hat.

You'll mostly find him from 12PM - 6AM in Smithfields Saloon in Valentine. Sometimes he will pass out at his table by the barber, in that case, leave and try again the following day because he doesn't wake up.

Pop a potent health tonic to become fortified when you see him and he's awake. Beware that it's possible for many things to go wrong such as becoming wanted for disturbing the peace. If you don't surrender you will be shot by the sheriff. It's all downhill from there lol. Once the bartender joined in on whipping my ass because he got caught between us lol.

Not sure.  I he doesn't bother anyone in Valentine when I play.

Because I shot him in the face.  With a shotgun, no now he's just shoulders and a stump.

Im the notoric notsaver But my only issue so far was to not bring the pelt of the legendary bear instantly to the trapper and it disappeared after a mission i believe.
