#SadCowboy
So since a lot of other games are doing the cross platform online, what are the chances we see that in RDR2? I think this is something that is likely going to happen with a lot of games in the future and if they do do this, what will that say about it coming to PC?? SNAK3S
I can't see this happening. PS has exclusive rights to certain stuff. Like they will be getting special content and what not. When you have a game that depends on two consoles fighting over it, cross platform would just be a dumb move marketing wise.
X S
Considering Sony recently decided to not take part in cross-platform play with Minecraft and Rocket League, it's clear that there's commercial interests at stake. Why would they want to "help" any other platform? However, it's been rumored that Rockstar is trying push for it, and although some say it's unlikely, I ultimately think Rockstar has a better chance of convincing Sony its worth it. Here's the article I read: http://comicbook.com/gaming/2017/06/16/rumour-red-dead-redemption-2-cross-play-support-being-discussed/
Jamesie
Yeah the thing is that there aren't really a lot of platforms for them to cross especially if Sony is so anti it. I mean initially it'll be Xbox and Playstation and if Playstation is out then it'll only really be PC much later on down the road when it releases (yes, it WILL release on PC someday....please!).

With PC and soon with Nintendo unless they declined that which wouldn't make any sense. They need to be more open to this. It isn't bad to want this option. It isn't the 90's and early 2000's where gamers only stuck to one console. In fact, since many people are hurting for money, I can see why a gaming developer would WANT cross platform options. This allows friends who are not on the same console to play together and this allows them to make more money. Most people don't buy two copies of the same game even if they have both consoles anyways. I hope that made sense, I kind of rambled lol
D3x
CP for this kind of game wont work. It will not benefit them in the long term. Short term, maybe but long term, they would lose money.

If you put the same game on all platforms and allow any player from any platform to play with each other, there is less of a chance that people will play both consoles just to play with friends. Like say I have 3 friends on PS4 and 3 on Xbox. Both groups want me to play so I eventually end up getting 2 copies. If cross platform is enabled, I don't have to do this thus they make less money off of me.

This is what a lot of games that allow CP do to ensure they not only continue to make money but give people a reason to buy more than one copy. For anyone who is logical about their money, this wouldn't work but for people who have money to spare or are just bad with managing money, it will work just fine. lol
elmZ
Playstation would be the one to not let this happen. They are not interested in it and I don't think they were very happy about Rocket League going on Nintendo either. Seems like they want to keep all the income to themselves. I can't entirely blame them.

We already know Playstation is getting some exclusives. Not sure what they will be.

They will spend money on stuff like this, not needing two copies of a game but getting them anyways for one reason or another.

Sorry to exhume this thread, but I've been thinking about this a bit lately and wanted to address your thinking on this. You're kind of basing the entire "no cross-play" suggestion on the idea that a very large number of gamers own both an Xbox and a PlayStation. I think that number is smaller than you would think. And I hardly think it's Sony's basis for a decision. Let's look at it another way. Say you have a PS4. You have 4 friends playing on PS4 and 3 friends playing on Xbox. If there's no cross-platform play, you can never play with all of them at once. But if it were cross-platform, and ALL SEVEN of your friends were playing together, wouldn't that make your decision to buy the PS4 version a no-brainer? Wouldn't that give you MORE incentive to buy the game? I really can't wrap my head around the logic of saying NO to cross-play because they think, "They won't buy TWO versions, then!!" Again, I know LOTS of people, and only one of them have both platforms. This is likely a quite small demographic. I have a strong feeling Sony's now leaning toward cross-platform play with XBox. They're getting a ton of pressure to do it, so they really can't hold out much longer and stay successful. After a while of completely ignoring your customers, they start going elsewhere. Surely owning a PS4 would make you buy the PS4 version whether it was cross-platform or not? It's online play only that they are talking about here, so PS4 players can be in the same lobbies as XBox players. The way I'm reading your post is that you are talking about the potential of buying a physical XBox game to play on your PS4, which of course would never be the case. Am I reading it wrong? What I am disputing is @D3x's claim that Sony does not want to do cross-platform play on the basis that IF gamers have BOTH a PS4 AND and XBox, if there is cross-platform play, those users will not buy both an XBox AND a PS4 version. I was just saying -- if a random gamer has friends who are playing the same game cross-platform and he only has one console, he'll be much more highly motivated to purchase the game BECAUSE it's cross-platform. If it were not, I very highly doubt it would encourage him to purchase the OTHER console AND a 2nd version of the game so he could play with SOME friends on one, and SOME friends on the other. I certainly don't think a PS4 game would work in an XBox, or vice versa. Apologies for the confusion.
redscrew
Most people have either or, not both. So I guess some people may be inclined to buy a second system to play with other friends on certain games? That isn't still a very large number. I do end up getting both current consoles but years apart from each other. It is too expensive to have both and buy copies of games for both. The cross-platform thing where I can be on PS and play with a friend who is on Xbox online could work but they don't have any logical reason to do it. Look at other games that are massive online.
