Thanks for the public callout of a sweet hunting spot, 😠

You could have sent an PM instead. No wonder everybody is chasing alligators in St. Denis now...

Thanks for the headsup Buddy. I went to the marshes today and  found that I could only carry 2 Heron carcasses on my horse. Didn't get any 'gator skins but will do so tomorrow. There was no indication that the 'gators are being overheated - there's one every few yards.

Thanks for this Buddy. I will try to find out tomorrow how to do this, I mean the mechanism. When I am in game is there a list of available posses? Is that how it works? Also, how can posse members give me information? Does this require me to have a mic and headset communicate. I'll get one if that's how it's done.

I would advise not to accept posse invites most are grievers, a mic is a must to communicate, don't  bother about trying to get three star pelts I've got nearly everything in the game & still got 31.000 bucks without worrying about 3* of any animal, loot every cabin you can get in, hunt on the marsh shoot anything that moves, go up north in the snow to earn not many players venture up there.

Good luck

Once again many thanks to a member for helpful advice.  I learned a lot doing RDR Story mode and now I am embarked on another steep learning curve. What for most of you guys is 'common sense' is strange and new to me. That reminds me of a line from a Robert W Service poem (The men who don't fit in) Something like, ... For they are strong and brave and true.  ...  But they years for the strange and new." Like 'Dangerous Dan McGrew" - 'hairy chested poetry. I'm rambling. Thanks Buddy

What, suddenly in the last 24 hours EVERYBODY on red dead is out hunting alligators N of St Denis because of a post I made on this forum?? I don't think so buddy, that area has always been very common knowledge. And a lot of players, myself included, have become a bit bored of just hunting the crap out of that area, so I never see it that busy anymore. There are a few hunting areas where I'm normally guaranteed to score a rare animal that I wouldn't necessarily divulge here but that area is definitely not one of them.

Yeah you can only carry 2 birds on your horse but you can carry more plumes and feathers in your satchel. Shoot everything you see, skin them all and cherry pick the best carcasses to carry on your horse. Herons/Cranes/Egrets/Spoonbills/Pelicans plumes & feathers are all considered different so you can carry 10 of each at a time. You can also only carry 1 large alligator skin (but loads of small ones) on the horse (or a large fish, hint, hint). 2 alligators will likely take you to the maximum big game meat you can carry (10) but you only get 2 teeth per animal. Shoot them in the head with your rifle for a clean kill and the best possible skin (same for all large animals).

Oh, and if you find any turtles shiv them with your hunting knife - they count as medium animals so work towards that buckle award.

I like to extend my hunting grounds north of the marshes all the way up to Brandywine Gap north of Annsburg. There you'll find deer, bucks, elk, moose, rabbits, turkeys, geese ducks and the occasional black bear and even more importantly, cougar. The only thing that sucks is you have to ride all the way back down to Saint Denis to sell your stuff.

For goodness sake don't let the cat out of the bag about the bird flight path west of Rhodes going to flat iron lake!

OMG you ruined everything!

Next thing you're going to do is divulge the panther spawn East of Catfish Jackson's, just off the road, inside the trees, usually at night!

LOL you guys are funny, there is NEVER a shortage of gators, EVER, just turn around and ride away and go back, BOOM! gators everywhere and 3 stars too.

Rockstar games has a reputation for that, just ride out of frame, and go back, the animals generally re spawn quickly, I go to shady belle for my gators, they are alwasy there, along with boars, birds coons, deer, fish, etc.. you name it plus indian tobacco, yarrow, thyme, and sage, there is even a panther near by.

Anyway dont worry about posts, everyone knows how to get to an area and have it to yourself.

If you do not know this, then here it is.

Spawn into Tumbleweed, fast travel to Rhodes, now the swamps are yours alone, pretty much, just spawn in far from where you intend to play.

I'd definitely take up any offers here to ride with others who don't mind showing you around.

I've been sick for over a week otherwise I would have offered up my own services.  .....assuming you're on PS4.  I usually ride with another member on here during the week and I'm sure he wouldn't mind (he's retired like me).

Anyhow, I hope things are working out and please continue to ask questions as there is never a shortage of folks here willing to answer questions, give advice, etc.

Thanks for the offer Buddy. I too am retired and would be pleased to join you when you are fit again - soon I hope. I bought a headset today but have been too busy (snooker night Thursday) to use it.

Lots of questions. Here's another. The emoticons or whatever they are seem very cumbersome to work.In the story mode I could exchange  cheery 'Hi Pardner' in an instant but if I've got it right the online equivalent takes so long the passing chap has well passed. Maybe there's a short cut.

Yes I'm on PS4 Pro.

Yes thanks again for the advice. I am in fact very familiar with the marshes NE of St Denis from the single player story mode. Plundered it for orchids, vanilla, snapping turtles, all manner of wading bird but never really bothered with the 'gators. Caught a huge gar fish there too. Your secret's safe with me!

I never claimed it to be a secret! 😉

btw there are no orchids online, only vanilla and they’re not worth seeking out as all herbs sell for 25c. And catch yourself a lake sturgeon off the east coast of the marshes - better money than gar. I’m convinced gators are more dosile in online than they were in story although if you take too much of a liberty with them they will still kill you!

Thats why R* should implement an "hunting pressure" like The Hunter: Call of The wild…
The moire hunting in an area, the less animals spawn...

If anyone can advise me on how I can make early money I would be grateful. I mean $124 for a bow, and a gold bar for a fishing lure!  Inflationary prices from the Story mode - and gold seems to be worth a lot less.

I willl upgrade my tent on your advice but first I need to earn some sponduliks. Don't yet know my priorities in these early days. Do I upgrade my carbine or buy a shotgun, or improve my camp.

......

Here is my guide for making money quickly without cheating.  I'm not saying this is the "best" way, this is just how I do it.  There may be better ways.  You should try different suggestions to see how much you can make and more importantly how much fun you have doing it.  Do what you enjoy doing, it shouldn't be a grind.

Also, you'll need some basic equipment to so definitely do story and stranger missions and whatever else to gain levels and unlock the basic items.  Some things you can get for free if you're on PS4   If you have gold, you can unlock other things even if you haven't reached the required level.  I would say buy the promotion of 25 gold bars for $4.99 is you can.  Even if you're opposed to microtransactions, it's worth it just to get your basic setup for the price of a cup of coffee.  You'll need a bolt action rifle with a short scope, a varmint rifle, and a fishing rod.  A shotgun is also useful for self defense.  Try not to spend all your money on clothes or gold plating your guns yet))

So for money, this is what I would do: If you've not already done so, first go to Valentine and hit the stable.  Get the free Andalusian (PS4 only) and free upgraded saddle and saddlebags that can hold more stuff (the cheesy looking ones with a skull, PS4 only).  Next go to the doctor and sell all your herbs except ginseng which imo is the most useful and hard to find.  Then go to the butcher and sell all your meat and pelts.  Finally go to the general store and buy four cans of worms (20 total).  Don't get the fishing lure at this point because if you catch something big your line will probably break anyway and you'll have nothing.  I wouldn't get  a bow early on either.  Anyway, now you're empty and ready to go.

Go to Strawberry and make a trip up to Big Valley towards towards Little Creek River.  On the way there, use your varmint rifle to shoot anything that moves, rabbits, squirrels, skunks, birds, anything, they all must die and go into your satchel no matter how insignificant they may seem.  Pay no attention to the quality of these varmint pelts.  Also, stop and pick every herb you see.  Even if it seems like a waste of the time, herbs are like free money sitting on the ground so jump off your horse and grab it.  You'll probably get ambushed by the O'Dricsols on the way so be ready for that (fun and xp).

Once you get to Big Valley and the creeks, there will be deer and elk everywhere.  Use your bolt action rifle to shoot everything with a good or pristine pelt as well as birds or anything else.  Also keep picking herbs until you are maxed out or sick of doing it.  It won't take long to be maxed out on animal parts and you'll have a bunch of pelts.  You can only carry one elk pelt, bear pelt, or big fish. I think the fish will bring in the most (remember you'll already be getting all the meat etc from other big game even if you don't keep the pelts).  While you're doing this, you'll probably get invited to take out the O'Driscol's hideout (fun and xp)

Listen for bear growls in the hills around they valley and go on foot and try to get a grizzly.  There are bighorn rams etc. up there as well (this is probably optional because sometimes it can take a while to get a bear and more likely the bear will get you, but for me it's the most fun).  You'll probably get attacked by wolves at some point which will give you a lot of game meat anyway.

The goal is to try to get as many pelts as possible and to max out every different type of meat (i.e., venison, big game, mutton, small game, plump birds, stringy meat etc.).  And whenever you kill something or pick an herb, jump off your horse and run to it and back because it will improve your stamina and help you rank up.  Additionally, you'll gain dead eye experience for everything you kill which helps you rank up too.

Once you feel like you've done enough, start heading back to Strawberry by way of Lake Owinjila.  Keep killing varmints/birds and picking herbs on the way.  At the lake, use the 20 worms to catch 20 fish.  You should get at least one big one for the back of your horse and even a load of small fish is surprisingly valuable.  You'll also gain strength quickly by fishing which helps you to level up.

By the time you get back to Strawberry, you want to have pristine elk or bear pelt or big fish on the back of your horse along with a bunch of pelts, and two pristine smaller animals hanging from the sides.  Sell everything to the butcher.  The money will be rolling in.  Then go back to the doctor in Valentine and sell all your herbs.  Less money but it adds up.

On weapons, it depends on what you prefer with regard to killing people.  I like shotguns so I got the pump action shotgun first, next in order would be the bolt action rifle (good dual use weapon) then varmint rifle (hunting but also deadly if you're good at headshots).  Sure, the carbine repeater isn't the best, but imo there's no point in having two repeaters and no shotguns or rifles.  a better repeater can wait imo.  Same with the cattleman revolver, not the best but it will do for the time being especially if you don't use handguns a lot.  Once you get ranked and have extra money, then think about upgrading the carbine or the cattleman revolver or getting a bow.  Upgrading the tent is probably the last of the priorities, but it's something many people forget or don't realize the benefits.

Hunting alligators is super easy but it's all big game meat so I iirc you'll be maxed out after killing three and can carry one skin, so you end up traipsing through the mud killing frogs and looking for a heron.

Friend I am so grateful for the time and effort you have put into this comprehensive response to my questions. I have already made some early mistakes, such as buying all the lures, but I have not spent money on cosmetics, only what I thought was practical. I don't even have any winter clothes yet - they are so expensive in the early game. I did get some worms but I've never had much luck fishing. Never caught a single legendary fish offline, but a big Gar that I had to ditch for some reason. I lost a lot of good pelts by being killed - I suppose there's the same risk online? I think I read somewhere that all horse cargo such as pelts are lost in Fast Travel

In an excellent You Tube video (100 Tips for Beginners) the chap recommended taking a wagon on hunting trips to load up with carcasses. I must try that - but I imagine it would be impractical up some of these steep winding paths!

Off line I did hunt up in the West Grizzlies but, illogically, the game insisted my animal carcasses were spoiling in sub-zero temperatures.

I didn't know about gaining strength or levelling up by fishing either.

I have got to Chapter 6 of the single player story mode without realising I could sell herbs to doctors! But then in the offline game I have 1000s of dollars and gold with nothing to spend them on. I have never thought of selling meat to butchers either! Useful tips indeed for the online game.

I did get the 25 GBs special offer.

What does "imo" mean? I really am a newbie!

There's so much good stuff in your response I can't wait to get to it later today.

Many thanks.

Also, shoot gators til you can get a fish pole, then get any lure, they all work in any body of water.

Fish for bass, trout, salmon as you can hold 10 of each and they sell for $2 to $2.50 and you can very quickly make several hundred bucks.

From there, going to areas plentiful with deer, boars, turkey etc.. BUT spawn into the opposite side of the game and ride over there or fast travel if you have the $$ so you wont be bothered by players while you hunt.

just keep that up.

It is easy to get away from players and as long as you have ammo and a fish pole making money is fast and easy.

I forgot to mention as soon as you can get a lancaster and shotgun, finish all the land of opportunity missions, the first time you do them you get paid well, after that it isnt as much but still pretty good.
You will learn that stretching missions out to the end will often pay you more so try to finish the objective on a stranger mission but then go hunt until the timer is near the end.

I just saw a video that suggested the highest pay isnt at the final 30 seconds but rather take the time alotted and divide it by 2 and then subtract 10 seconds, and this supposedly is the optimal payout for xp anyway, I dont know how true it is, I only started experimenting with this yesterday, but it is worth a try.

So if the time says 12:20 then split that to 6 mins 10 seconds, drop the 10 seconds and you have 6 minutes, finish the mission at exactly 6 minutes for optimal payout.

We will see, in the past it was the last 30 seconds tended to pay out the most, I have gotten 250 xp  one time and 780 xp another time on the same missions just by extending the time.

But anyway story missions are pretty good and you can replay them as many times as you want.
SO add that to your day and you should do well, hunting, fishing, running story missions over and over and stranger missions, plus encounters.

Loot every body and you will find some treasure maps too.

I like to take on a hunting missions, then get the wolf or bear, then continue to hunt until the timer runs nearly out then bring the pelt to the missions giver so you get the xp and $$ from pelts that you hunted while on the missions plus the missions payout as well.
