You know.....  I like that actually.

Instead of a white flag, perhaps players could be color coded on the map based on their level of hostility toward others.

Although I like the white flag idea as that could be something that could act as a sort of passive mode for players that want to do their business in town, etc. without the threat of being attacked.  .....of course time limits and the mechanics would need to be ironed out to keep griefers from taking advantage of it.

Maybe if someone uses a white flag but then attacks someone within while raised or within a certain time frame after its lowered will be labeled as a hostile for all to see and a bounty offered?  ......or something like that.  .....just spitballin' here.

I made the colour-coded map markers to R*, I think it could work.  At least you'd know who to avoid.  Good tips though, thanks.  I don't mind getting killed its not actually me after all, and isn't personal), just irritating being forced into a tit-for-tat feud when I'm trying to farm, or just hooning around.  But horse killing sucks, shooting me from afar, or in the back etc is one thing..but don't mess with  a man's horse..them's fighting words where I come from!!

If I had run in to you online, I'd have been dead.

There is a skill level involved when some of the griefing solutions are mentioned. And I'm not that good a player.

I'm so bad a player that along with accidentally punching my horse on occasion, once I tried to wave at a player and mistakenly pulled my pistol and shot at his feet. I immediately turned my back to him to try and show that I'm not hostile. This guy, whoever he was, was such a class act that even though he now had his gun drawn, he didn't shoot me. I finally figured got the wave figured out, but did it with my back to him.

And I'm such a PvEer that I actually had the drop on someone coming all the way across a small river toward me but I was giving him the benefit of the doubt. Yeah, he popped me good.

You know, you're right.  Let's blame dunning kruger???

Since this topic has been posted multiple people have tried to just run right at me while I was minding my own business and I was 'forced' to put them down.

I have found that if you make yourself a hard target to 'grief', then most everybody finds somebody else - depending on the individual of course.

You are also so correct about that whole 'giving benefit of the doubt'.  I tried that once, he actually drew on me - if I didn't have the hat perk I would have died.  Don't trust anyone.  Except Arthur morgan.

Griefers seek easy targets.   Many claim to be great PvP players but run when a PvP player shows up.  They generally concerned about their K/D ratio to the point that if you kill them easily that they will change servers and then report you for griefing them.

I punched my horse. I screamed louder than him and spent half an hour patting him and apologising. Still no idea what I had pressed, think I was looking for a biscuit...

We all as someone who doesn't just blast everyone for no reason.   You may find most people won't attack you.

For me its about about 1 in a 100 people attack.

Besides...  shooting 1st will put you in a battle against people.

I also think people are throwing around the word grief too often.

Me and a buddy interrupted a posse of 4 doing a stranger mission and completed it instead of them all while killing them 10+ times...is that griefing?  We stopped killing them once we completed 'the mission.'

For me usually when I’m out hunting or just minding my own business and I feel someone might end up being hostile sometimes I just shoot my gun up in the air because it gives other players that’s close by a warning message to not mess with me in most cases it’s worked for me  like when I saw someone start to approach while I was helping my posse member hunt I did that and I just saw them go the other way after that

You killed them once during a mission, which you doing is part of the mission.  Now if they moved onto something new and you are following and killing them and they haven't fired a shot at you.  Yeah, that is griefing.  Now when you killed them once during the mission and they kept coming back and you kept killing them, well to me that is them wanting to participate in PvP and kind of asking for it.  If your killing them is just to make sure they don't have any fun, is griefing.

Some of the missions, request outside interference.  To me to participate in those isn't griefing, but there is a limit.  Like one night I had to deliver 2 bags of mail and I was playing solo.  Now what I got was 2 posses and both had 7 players each and they all focused on me.  I don't feel I got griefed, but one posse of 7 players was more then enough to stop me from completeing it.  Each group had about 5 apiece do nothing be keep me out of the mission once I got killed.  While the others delivered it.  Crappy situation, but it was part of the mission.

I have seen solo players fishing or hunting that had groups attack them.  Then keep attacking them.  Why?  It wasn't required, yet they was hitting them hard.

Hell, I had one occasion this weekend.  I loaded up and by the time I actually spawned in, I was dead.  Re-spawned in and was dead before I got completely spawned in.  I shut the game down, cause I felt that was horse sh*t.

The whole online experience has been garbage so far for me. I have never raised a gun to anyone yet unless they actually fired a shot at me first. I have been killed carrying pelts to my horse, killed fishing, killed coming out of a general store, killed leaving my campsite.  I have been killed 3 or 4 times by the same person without ever fighting back, just to prove a point, that some people just want to ruin the experience for others. I have had 3 or 4 friends try to play this game with me and they have all given up after only a few minutes in most servers.

Players who wish to kill each other for no reason already have series events to compete in, where they can shoot each other all they want. But people who want to play with friends in this amazing world have no choice but to share our world with some players who are just trying to be the worlds biggest idiot. I am hoping for a free roam world that is safe to play with friends, or to meet new friends. It would be nice to ride up to someone with them having no fear of you in a safe online world to interact with them.

Unfortunately it seems rockstars focus is on online misery from children and making that money fast before they find a way to give us an amazing game experience with our friends. Until its a reality I am officially done with the online. All the free gold bars in the world cant make me enjoy playing with terrible people.

I don't think the term has been overused personally.  If you ask folks that have been using the label you'll likely get an immediate reaction form most that missions are not the same thing.  That is an event that other players are invited to play as adversaries.  Those particular missions are PvP events.

Those who have been complaining about trolls have been very descriptive in what they consider griefing in these threads.

-BUY horse insurance.

You know how many players I encounter who STILL haven't done this? lol Like come on, it is a no-brainer to get it. Horses are targeted more than players it seems.
