pvp modes and why I dont play them

So, lol I got a little triggered earlier, and just had to rant, I sent Rockstar my thoughts, then I thought, let me rant on the board, and get it all out.

So, rant on, lol

If you dont want to hear me whine about the game, just skip it.

Multiplayer, I hate that you have to select a "series" then you get whatever you get.

I hate it!!

What bothers me is how awesome the game is, and how stupid this system is, I cant understand how they can get the game so right and then screw up the part that some of us take for granted.
I mean it never occurred to me that they wouldnt just make a list of modes for us to chose and then leave us be, watch and see what we do with it, before they decide that wont work, and we want people to  try them all so... I have had enough, I am just not paying pvp screw it.

Why cant they just put in play a list, these are the game modes, pick the one you want and then go play it?

Every other multiplayer game has figured this out, but Rockstar for some reason has some reason of their own that they will not give the players the power of choice and freedom to do what we want.

I have no idea why, maybe they feel certain modes wont get any use ? too bad, I am not playing any pvp anymore because I dont like surprises, I hate loading in only to find out it is some mode I dont like and there arent enough people to make it fun anyway.

I am not interested in these run around the map with a bow in silence, or run around the outskirts of a map and try to get back to your base, etc. there just dumb, I dislike them and would rather not waste my time with them.

I just want it simple, death match, team deathmatch, capture the flag, team capture the flag, etc..maybe a few others, the territory one isnt bad if you are lucky enough to get on with people that actually have a $5 mic and will talk to you so you can work together, which almost never happens, so I give up.
I say make me a list, let me select what I want and get out of the way.

I sent this same point to Rockstar but I wanted to see who else feels this way, is it just me?

Sadly it isnt so much that I dislike all of those, but I dont want to be forced to play them..

Same with these free roam events, fishing events, herb picking event, etc.. wtf Rockstar , make a list, let us chose, F off with these random events that pop up in free roam, if I want to play and event I would go to the multiplayer menu and select it, otherwise if I am in free roam for a reason.
I dont want to be taken out of free roam to do anything, I am there for a reason, usually to level up, or make ammo, or craft tonics, etc.. then I go to pvp modes, but of course in this game it is all backwards.

Anyway I am just super frustrated that something so great that I enjoy so much is so broken with so many flaws that seemingly are unnecessary.

Beta is over stop it with market research and whatever other reasons you have for these crazy ideas, the game is great, stop trying to change every aspect of how we play Multiplayer games.

Rant over, flame on.

I hear you. Not getting to choose your game is one of my biggest PVP gripes. Another is often getting separated and placed on a different team than your posse mates thanks to the game doing some last second auto team balancing right before the match starts. That and the showdowns are rife with idiots and cheaters and I can only stomach so much of that.

Yes, that drives me nuts too and I think it is partly being manipulated by people who play regularly and know how to influence the system to get on the team they want, it happens way too often and many times when teams are balanced it does it anyway so I dont trust it or know why it still scrambles everyone, but if you look at the player list prior to the end, things will look good, a well balanced set of teams and then all at once, it is a scramble and tada, they are not balanced any more and people are playing with thier friends.
I dont get what they do or even if they can influence it but it sure seems like it sometimes, and yeah, that bothers me too, I wish it werent like that, you should only be able to select that you want to play, then the game does the rest and puts you where it wants you and you have no say in the matter, I woudl much rather see that happen, so at least I know the game isnt being manipulated by people.

Especially team based games, you really need to talk to your team mates to coordinate to really do well, and if you can not, well you just arent goign to do as well as a team who does communicate.

Anyway I hope that more people will write to Rockstar and tell them, they dont like this system and woudl like it to be simple, just a list of game modes and leave us be.

I generally don't like PvP in an arcadish game like this but yeah, I also found this frustrating because of the 1 or 2 specific events/modes I did find somewhat entertaining, I have to be forced to play all the others I don't.

I 💯% agree. Let me pick the game I want to play. I do like a few showdown modes, but I truly hate how I have to play absolutely everything else and waste an hour between the 3 minute rounds of what I want to play. At the very least, make a vote page like on GTA so the group your with can move around between rounds based on majority rules.

Mics are another pet peeve of mine. They’re not expensive (mine came free packaged up with my PS4 control) . No one is expecting studio quality sound, but it’s an online multiplayer game. I’m really tired of finding a world full of mutes absolutely everywhere I go.

as for the freeroam events, I don’t mind. If I don’t want them, I don’t go. If something catches my eye, I go. Most of them are things I’d never think to actually go out of my way to sign up for. I’m happy how they work.

Sorry but for this game, I stick to party chat only, even when I'm by myself. I refuse to subject myself to the diarrhea that comes out of some players mouths!

Maybe it’s just me then. Since I don’t have groups of video game friends I regularly play with, about 90% of any interaction I get out of online is with randoms. It’s hard to have any kind of meaningful interaction with randoms when they don’t talk and/or don’t listen. It just turns into a world of psychotic mutes that may or may not kill you at any instant.

When I am in PVP I generally am with a friend or more so we are in PS chat and don't hear the rest of the players. On the occasion we aren't on PS chat there are many idiots ranting and S#$% talking. There were a few and I mean very few times where the PVP chat was useful and fun.

Yeah... I should have distinguished between free roam and PvP. My grip is with the freeroam mutes. PvP does come with more competitive trash talk when there are mice on, though still surprisingly quiet when you need to communicate with someone.

I find I usually need to mute general chat to avoid:

  • the mouth breathers;
  • the idiots playing their bad music; and
  • the people having a dull conversation with someone else in the background.

I do regret that this means that I am probably missing out on people who actually want to interact as part of the game.

Don’t worry. I’m not going to win this one. I get why people wouldn’t want to hear some certain other people (personally I just mute the odd offender to the ear-balls as I come across them. It’s not like it’s absolutely everyone). But it really does take a lot out of the online world when people don’t interact with each other in my opinion.

I hate the players that just spawn in and do nothing to get the xp and gold. I also dislike when there is an objective and nobody is even trying to accomplish it just trying to get the most kills. Many times I feel like I'm the only one trying to win the mode.

Yeah. The same thing happens in races. Every single one I’ve been in has at least one guy rubber banding his controller and riding in a circle. It gets annoying having to wait for the time out all the time.

I understand what you're saying.  This is one of things where I think it sounds better in theory than in practice.  .....but when it works, it works.

IMO/IME, I find that either people refuse to communicate or they do something that forces me to have to mute them (e.g. eating, background noise, play music, bad quality comms, shout expletives/racial slurs/insults, etc.).  A lot of times I simply find most randoms that use the mic really annoying.  I will say however, that there are moments when it all comes together and you have a really good experience with it.  .....but those moments are too few and far between to warrant the use of it most times for me.

Hell, even it games where it really should be a "must have" (e.g. small, squad based tactical shooters), I still run into the same issues and most will revert to party chat with just their friends.  ......the rest of the squad are on their own.

I use a mic everytime the whole time, do you know how many toxic players I have heard?

Seriously in 122 levels how many would you think?

The answer is none, not one, zero!!

I never, ever hear anyone ever!

LOL this is so irritating, what is everyone afraid of?

I think it makes it harder to wrong people or act like a jerk or rush someone else's 99% cleared hideout and start looting their bodies, if you are also talking to them and can hear them and are also talking back, I think it makes people behave a little better when they can hear your voice.

I know this to be true because I started using a mic to stop some of the griefing, and it actually worked.,

I also made some good friends, and a few people who were acting stupid later felt really bad, explained their point of view I understood and they went and hunted with me and brought me carcasses to the butcher to help me out after killing me and my horse and all because we chatted, we didnt scream and yell and swear at each other, we were civil, and as matter of fact.

If you dont use a mic at all , I truly believe you are missing out,

Maybe you had a bad experience, or in other games but I am telling you 100% I swear on my kids, I have not had one single toxic encounter on the mic.

Now, in pvp, yeah you get smack talkers, But they arent toxic, they are just getting into the competitive nature of the game, and I love it!!

Because when I get into a territory game and at least one other player uses his mic, we can coordinate and each time this happens, we dominate, because we are organized, and we work together.

Even if the rest of our team doesnt, the two of us together can take territories and move on quickly and almost every time our team starts working with us too, indicating they hear us, they just arent talking.

Anyway seriously I strongly encourage you to at least try it in PVP, you dont want it in free roam, sure no worries that is your time, But hen you join a team based game, and we need to work together, you are handicapping your whole team by ignoring them and not working together, to me, why bother playing a team game if you refuse to play with your team?

Not you specifically of course, I just mean anyone, I am so tired of playing those team games because of this simple fact, too many people play like lone wolves, no team work at all and I hate to lose because of other people, I just wont play.

I wish they made it required, Mic or you cant join period, disco or mute your mic and the game kicks you, it would put an end to it and make the game soo much better

Again, in Free Roam, meh, thats your choice, do it, dont do it, I think you are missing out but whatever BUT in pvp team games, I feel like, why are these people here? how can they expect to do well if they dont even try to play as a team?

Now I get it some people play with friends, so yeah you are working together, just not with me and the other public solos in the room, and thats where I think you should at least try it.

I met a few people in pvp playing in blackwater, the territory game, and they were really into winning, lol so when  joined their team, they immediately talked to me, said "Hey Lumper, lets go!! lets get them" stuff like that and I just followed the guy talking, and man was it fun, plus we won, a lot.

I just think if you are going to play those team games it would be so much better if more people at least tried to communicate is all.

The one or two times I heard bad music, mouth breathing, etc... I muted that player, it took one second, and the rest of the room could hear me, so when I had encounters, they were mostly good, not all, I had a few griefers who werent sympathetic lol, but they didnt talk into their mics untiil I talked to them, they had them on and just muted their end, but were listening.

Also, often when a person walked toward me and I thought, "uh oh here we go" a whole bunch of times I was able to defuse it with my mic, just by talking to them and saying stuff like, hey, back up, I see you, you dont need to get any closer man, seriously Im warning ya, I see your weapon ready to go, I have a dyno arrow lit, I dont want to splat you but if you dont leave me any other choice I will... stuff like that lol and it works.

I made a few friends like that, lol.

I see a player waving, I talk to them, hey whats up? hows it going? sometimes they put on their mic other times they wave, then ride off, but they heard me.

I won't play with a mic and typically try to play only in glitched lobbies in free roam--but imagining you saying that to someone made me laugh!

Well, if more people talked, encounters can definitely feel less like griefing and more like role playing a western character... Just saying...

So, In the spirit of scientific research, I have spent about 5 hours playing with no muting anyone, actually logging in a little book what player interaction I got. About 3 hours was freeroam (including one King of the Castle event), and the rest were showdowns - a combination of various lone wolf and team games.

I can report my findings as follows:

  • People whose names occasionally appeared as in chat, but largely inaudible: about 6 - 10 - some came and went so quickly I wasn't sure whether they were different people
  • Loud breathers: 4
  • Loud music: 6 (mainly crappy, but with one Rolling Stones track to mitigate the situation)
  • Whiny Kid arguing with his mum about his chores: 1
  • Players talking to someone else not in game: 3
  • Trash talker: 1 (self proclaimed master of King of the Castle (he wasn't))
  • People actually talking to each other in game: 4 (2 sets of 2) 1 pair just general daily chat, one pair (freeroam) actually talking about what mission/hunting they would do next, and commenting on passers by.
  • People talking tactics in a team PvP match: Zero, out of 6 matches played

Now, that is just a snapshot of what I saw last night.  I wish it was different, and that there was actually either some wild west interaction or team tactical talk going on, but there wasn't, as far as I saw.

Thanks for telling me how to play the game 😜, but I think I'll stick to my original plan.

Yup, silence is golden. I'm near level 150 and I've almost never used game chat. I think I've done alright for myself. If you need to communicate, there are ways of doing so non verbally, such as emotes. If you want someone to back off, you can fire a warning shot. Aim, press up on the d-pad and fire will fire a shot straight up into the air and give any players in the immediate vacinity a textual warning that you have fired a warning shot and you had best stay away.

To each their own, I guess. Besides, my first griefing encounter after Defensive dropped was me getting shotgunned in the back. Talking wouldn't have helped.

Just the other day, as I was admiring the scenery (Defensive mode on, as usual), someone rode up behind me, dismounted, pulled out his machete and started to approach me. I don't even want to talk to someone that would try something like that.

Nah, I'm good with no mic, thanks.

Like I said before... I’m not going to win this one. But I’m tired of all the  psycho-mutes..

@Harlock1796... I don’t know if I’m just lucky or what, but your little three hour log sounds like an exaggeration of every encounter I’ve had since playing RDR... I’m not saying you are exaggerating, but I’m just not hearing this and my mic is on 24/7 while I’m on.

@The_Liquor your also on a different console than @Harlock1796.  I have not seen as much on PS4 either. Does that make a difference? Maybe.

In total, I actually heard discernible sounds from about 20 people over a 5 hour period, with the majority of those in PvP.

All of the breathers and music players were in showdowns (2 hours on top of the 3 in free roam) and some of that time was in large showdown, so in the lobby (I think) you get to hear all 20+ people, certainly in non-team games - when you're split into teams, do you only hear your own team?.

In fairness, once you take that out, free roam wasn't too bad an experience, considering that I spent a fair bit of the time in and around Valentine, and there was a reasonable amount of player traffic.

Am I right in thinking they've reduced the general chat range?  Once I heard someone on chat, I looked on the map to locate then and then approached, so that I could be sure what they were saying, for my research.  Had I ridden on through, I think I would have gotten out of chat range pretty quickly.

In summary:

  1. Most of the chat problem was in showdowns, and (when I wasn't busy restocking ammo or changing loadout) I would have time to mute noisy players individually;
  2. There wasn't a huge chat problem in free roam, but neither did anyone say anything that enhanced my experience.  If I had a mind to, I might have been able to engage with the two guys talking about the actual game;
  3. Other than in the free roam event, there was nothing even approaching nastiness, and that guy was more mildly amusing/tedious than offensive.

In conclusion, I didn't encounter anything terrible, but I literally, in 5 hours, heard nothing that enhanced my game experience.

Maybe it's the Xbox.  Maybe its the time I was playing (roughly 10pm-3am UK time).  Seriously, I would love it if there was more constructive chat going on, and maybe I'll give it another go, but on that evidence, I'm not optimistic.

When in PVP you only hear chat from your team. There is a brief couple seconds after killed you can hear the person that shot you.

The PVE chat is similar to the blue blip in that you only hear players within a certain proximity to you. 10PM is 5PM EST just when the kiddies are getting home from school. 3AM is when most kiddies are getting ready for bed to go to school the next day. Soon with summer out, that all changes. Your 10pm to 1pm was probably the worst.
