Things you didn't know you could do in RDR2

I sometimes watch those youtube tip channels, and from them I found out there's all kinds of stuff you can do in RDR2 that I had not noticed or overlooked.  I'll stick a few down here now, and I encourage folk to post more as they think of them - anything, however simple, that folk might not realised :)

Determine gun load out at gunsmiths

Sit on edge of some cliffs

Set a dozen waymarkers on the map (and go straight to map and back without multiple button pushes)

Lasso and stab animals when hunting

Toggle single push to run option in settings (along with other options)

Rest at closed shops to jump to shop opening time

Equip pocket watch for in-game animation time telling

Just realized yesterday that the "eagle eye" vision highlights lootable objects (bookcases, desks, etc).

Also just noticed yesterday that dead eye highlights kill shots on animals. That's really helping with perfect pelts! (wasn't paying attention when it was explained, so I just started using dead eye in chapter 2...)

@gigemaggs99 pointed this out to me, but I have yet to try it:

You can also hold down the camera button to go into cinema mode so it will "fast travel" to your next destination then get a drink or whatever while he's traveling.

I don't use it much but when I ride with a partner (yellow person on the map) or part of a mission yes, I have to hold down A. If I'm just traveling say from way up north to the trapper I select the trapper on the map, then go into the cinema screen and it takes me there all the way, no pressing A.

I know I have a few more (probably obvious) ones that I was oblivious to. I'll be back!

Use D-Pad to bring up place info, time and re-size mini-map, or show current mission logs

Read documents in satchel

Use a camera to take in-game b/w selfies and photos

Use melee attack from horseback to kick out

Leap from horse to other horses, carriages and trains

Tap whistle to summon horse, hold longer for different whistle to get horse to follow

Gain access to cheat codes via newspapers

I just discovered that there is a "Horse station" function at camp. If you walk up to a hitching post, you get the "Horse station" prompt where you can swap out your horses (if you own multiple horses). Neat.

Don't you have to upgrade your camp to get that?

Selling both Legendary and Perfect pelts to the Trapper unlocks the recipes for the clothing: you do not need to hold onto perfect pelts in your inventory.

I knew this was true for Legendary pelts, but it holds true for perfect pelts as well.

There are also a TON of side businesses to rob without incurring Honor penalties OR bounties.  You just have to keep a look out for "irregularities" in buildings that indicate hidden or inaccessible rooms.

I found a spot last night where I was able to fish without being bothered by bounty hunters! My bounty is at 325 there now and if I walked further down the shore they would interfere.

Best part about fishing last night, I found a way to get honor for tossing the fish back, but have it land on the shore. This way, the fish dies and you can pick it up for dead eye xp. Seems only 10 can pile up though, so you still have to pick them up once in a while.

My honor is almost maxed. I didn't figure this out until towards the end of my fishing trip. I also started catching fish very quickly by slowly reeling it in and flicking it every few turns (dirty). Not sure if that was ever explained, I tend to space out when people talk...

Edit: Almost forgot this one: You can view the in-game time by opening the menu. That pocket watch is actually showing the time, not just "there to be there" like I assumed.

Whoa, there, Scarface!  You may want to dial back on the murdery-ness.

Or better yet, use a melee attack ON a horse and get kicked by it.  Hilarious.

Hold B/Circle to back all the way out of the shop catalog menus in one go.

This was one of my favorites that I found out by mistake gaming while drunk on cheap rye.

It's also helpful to locate plants and herbs in the wild.  Also useful when looting a camp to point out consumables and lockboxes.

Thank you for the newspaper tip, I didn't know about that one. My buddy pointed out the cheat menu in the settings window and we couldn't figure out what how to use it, mine are all locked, I figured it was something you get later in the game. I'll go buy a newspaper now 🙂

Doing chores around camp raises your honor. So far I'm at the first camp, so I'm able to chop wood, place hay bales for horses, move sacks of food to Pearsons wagon and refill the wash basin behind Pearson's wagon. You get some special dialogue from NPCs if they see you doing chores. They appear as small black dots on the minimap when you are close to them.
