Getting grieffed as a trader.

Question

Posted (edited)

I don't mind the challenge. It would be dumb if it was easy. But some of the mechanics of defending your wagon on a trade route are really broken.

First you can't cancel a trade run. If you notice there are a bunch of other players around who are going to rob you, you have no choice but to push on.

The second issue is there are no risks or challenge to greifing traders. No bounty for murdering and stealing. I get slaughtered over and over, lose a large wagon of profit, and they recieve no bounty at all? No chance of some newly minted eager bounty hunters to ride to the rescue. And after the deed is done they simply just go into defensive mode right after so I can't retaliate. At the very least I should be able to get high bounty reward for killing them.

And honestly the bounty for robbing a trader should be so high that they risk getting every player in the area on their tail. The chance of them making it to the trade drop of with my goods should be about the same chance of me catching up to them and getting my goods back. Would be robbers should have to think twice about stealing a trade wagon.

Just my thoughts.

I see alot of people saying the mechanic isnt broken but to defend a wagon you are forced to sit on against 3 assailants or more most definetley puts you at an insane disadvantage. Spawning you without your horse at a considerable distance from the goods you just lost also make it a monumental task to get it back. The fact that people say only do local deliveries it doesn't show up on the map...ok, but when servers are crowded you are gonna get discovered and get merced and robbed. I have found taking the train tracks helps as opposed to the main road but even then if your delivery is in a crowded city like Saint Denis you can bet your sweet bippy you will be mugged. I feel more thought needs to be put into this portion of the trader role

Well, what I like to do is whistle my horse as I’m driving the wagon... this way, if I do get attacked, I have trusty old Red Liquor close by. I’ll temporarily abandon the wagon, fend of the attacker(s) on the much more mobile horse, then jump back to the wagon to try to finish the run.

Not really... sure, I may have to respawn, but I don’t really loose anything when you destroy your own wagon, just you do. I’d just laugh and move on with my day.

you lose the possibility of stealing my 100 units of materials... was griefed by a 4 v 1 posse... probably how you roll... local delivery from now on unless in a solo lobby

No, I actually run solo most of the time. I also don’t tend to steal wagons all that often, maybe once in a blue moon if I happen to see one and I’m not in the middle of something else. But if I did steal your wagon, not only would it not be griefing (you are allowed to steal a wagon from a rival and it’s actually encouraged. Not to mention well within the theme of being a Wild West outlaw) but I’m really not put out all that badly if you destroyed your wagon. I won’t get the free supplies, sure, but I wasn’t likely banking on them anyway. It was merely an opportunity for a little bonus to me. At the end of the day, I’m out 10 seconds to respawn and get my bearings and I go on with my day. You are the one out all that work that never translated into money. I’d personally make the effort to actually recover my wagon.

running local deliveries is a good strategy if you are not willing to take the risk of being robbed. There is a reason you get payed more for the long delivery...

Coolest username ever. I have since adjusted my gameplay opting for only local delivery and explosive rounds loaded into my semi autos. But your advice on bringing the horse was right on. Worked like a charm. Add me on ps4 Hammer_Dikc

Ride with a crew. Its a savage gameworld, and I love it. I agree some additional protections are needed for traders, but if you could cancel runs everyone would just cancel at the first sigh of trouble. Some of the most fun Ive had were shootouts on long hauls, win or lose.

I think in part you have a god point, there should be some consequences for committing crimes, stopping you is part of the game and that makes it dynamic, but as in the story mode or other online interactions with npcs if there is a single witnesses that can get to help then the bounty system should kick in or something similar.

I play solo myself so I never try to run long distance deliveries, I need the $500 and dont want to risk it, I have tried them, and I enjoy the action, but I cant sustain the losses in a world where it is so hard to find groups of easily hunted animals, they are too precious to risk for an additional $150 IMO.

If you are running solo consider shorter runs so people dont mess with you.

I like the idea of a $20 instant bounty for attempted robbery so that players around you have motivation to get involved and not necessarily to steal from you but rather to catch or kill the wanted posse or player, that might be interesting.

I'm strictly a Trader (gonna ask if I should also do something else) and it is very frustrating because all I see is a blue dot.  Blue dots are all over the place and most of the time they're not attacking anyone.  I ride by them all the time but all the sudden one of em pulls out a weapon and kills you before you can even react.  Then of course you spawn so far away that there's no way you're going to catch up to them and get your trade wagon back.  I also have issues where you have to go kill an animal to deliver to another trader, then he gives you supplies.  Twice now, I'm told to kill a turkey, or deer and once I do that, there's no location for the trader!!  You ride around looking for a camp but the mission times out and fails. (Sometimes there's a white dot you can map to, sometimes an actual yellow path to the trader but this is different, no trader marker at all.)

Here's a trick to help reduce player attacks when making a trader delivery. Spawn on the Eastern side of the map like Lemoyne or New Hanover. Set your camp to Gaptooth Ridge in New Austin. Fast travel to camp and start a long delivery. The delivery point is either going to be Thieves Landing or a shack along the St. Luis river in Hennigan's stead. It's  a quiet out of the way route where most of the time you'll encounter no resistance. You might encounter a player coming from Armadillo, or around Thieves Landing, but it's rare.

I like the idea behind that, but I have found increasingly that players simply sit outside known delivery points and wait to attack any incoming player.  I ran in some moonshine over Christmas and there were two players waiting at the shack.  Opened fire as soon as I came into view.  Had I not had Never Without One I'd have lost the lot.  As it was I was able to lose my hat, race the wagon into the delivery zone (fluke that the final bend in my approach was so close that they only got off the one shot), then leap from the wagon with twin navies firing and had the inevitable gun battle (which I won, yay!), with my money banked and only honour on the line.  But if they're simply staking out the delivery location then they will always catch someone regardless of where we spawn.  And it's basically penalty free.

Any player coming directly at you when that big red wheel is on the map is out to get it. If they don't take measures to avoid it they will die. We always have a point man that will fire warning shots first. If they proceed in our direction there going dirt napping no exceptions ! Too much money on the line to be nice. It doesn't take much to give a wide birth so we know you have no ill intent. Come at us and you lose ! Easy breazy

Agreed. The boys in the Posse tend to kill anything that's moving on the way to a delivery. Never lost one yet even when a modder attacked. I sit on the wagon safe and sound.
