I have a thought. When we first meet John Marston riiiiiight at the start of RDR1 He's not at Beecher's Hope. He's getting off of the steamboat with the federales. Which suggests they have either brought him back from somewhere abroad (in relation to West Elizabeth and New Austin). We also know that the FBI (or its RDR incumbent) has blackmailed John into being its assassin. He's tasked with capturing or killing Bill Williamson ("I'm trying to save you Bill. They'll kill us all") Javier Escuela and Dutch Van Der Linde. One by one exterminating the members of the old gang.

Whats not to say that John hasn't just stepped off of that steamboat after killing Arthur Morgan on behalf of the law?

Good thinking! Though I hope it's not the case.

We never heard anything about Sadie or Arthur in RDR 1, maybe that's because they're spending the rest of their lives laying low and living a clean life, they wanted out like John and perhaps he covered up to keep them protected.

I'm not sure if I'm alone on this, but personally as much as I love John, I would not be a fan of Arthur dying and then playing as John. The first issue is that it is very predictable and nobody would be suprised if Arthur died. Maybe Arthur dying would work in some way, but if it's by John killing him as many are suggesting, I would only like John less. Of course John wouldn't have much of a choice, but it still would make me like him less for killing a character I'll be bonding with. It's been stated that "However, it is revealed that Arthur is going through an "existential crisis", where he begins to develop skepticism regarding Dutch's ideologies and motives as the gang grow more notorious in status over time."

Now here's where I just get into theorizing and sh*t. Because this game is starting at the 'downfall' of the gang, I think it's reasonable to believe that the game will have the part where John Marston is left by the gang. Because of the statement above, I believe that throughout the course of the game Arthur will be straying farther from the group. I can see both of them being left behind or at the very least Arthur not wanting to leave John behind. Now I'm just rambling. I don't know, it just makes sense for Arthur to help John and for John to in turn help Arthur and (possibly Sadie) to stay off of the governments radar or fake their death or whatever so the government and Dutch won't be able to find them. Just a theory. But personally, with what we know so far I'd in turn like for a peaceful ending with John and another girl from the group (maybe there is the option of making relationships) living out the last of their days in some mountainside Cabin or something

I am thinking there will be two endings and one will be where Arthur indeed remains alive but the other one, he will end up getting killed. I mean there is also the chance that he gets arrested and thrown in prison but how common was that back then? I really don't know. I can get not wanting the ending to be predictable.

At first, I loved the idea of playing as John at the end, it just makes sense to have it go that way but the more I thought about it, I grew sour of it. @TheDragonfly44 made some good points that I agree with. Like it is just too easy for them to write it out that way and really, there would be no shock factor or surprise to it. It has been noted that this game will highlight the hight and fall of Dutch's gang so we will see people turn on each other and leave the gang all together. Surely not all of them lose their lives.

What if in the end, you take over as Sadie.  Someone who Arthur mentors in the game?

I didn't even consider this but I would personally love it. We have never been given the chance to play as a female in the stories so I am all for it.

That's what EA would do
