Just my initial thoughts for what it's worth: Finally got the download to finish this morning. WOW! Definitely going to back this up to an external hard drive, don't want to go through that again! I would definitely like to see a DVD set made available for those of us stuck with DSL. Started the game a bit nervously after hearing about all the issues, and knowing how outdated my system is. Pleasantly surprised to have it launch without a hitch. Game installer's chosen settings seem to be a perfect match for my old system, surprising mix of low to ultra, but it works so am not touching it unless I am forced to. Character creation was interesting, I am not great at this, definitely no career as a character designer in my future, but ended up with a character I liked well enough. I am always impressed with those who can make their character look just like Lee Van Cleef or something. I struggle not to look like a circus freak! The "story" mode of it was a nice touch I thought. The Good: Launched into online play (Saving offline for the week-long internet outages we have around here at times) Picture quality better than I expected, even on my old system the level of detail is amazing at times. Fog is not just a haze hanging in the air, it actually moves and billows like the real thing. NPCs react to my character in differing and realistic ways. Animals actually react to me too, not just standing there waiting for me to play the usual MMO whack-a-mole. Heck, I even startled a frog that leapt away from me in the swamp! Overall the world has some real depth. No auto-target and target lock either. Limited fast travel, food really matters and isn't just a stat buff, none of the gimmicks modern MMO's rely on so heavily. Feels like a world that requires me to make my way in it. This is going to be a fun challenge. The cut scenes were well written and acted, I have seen much worse movies in theaters. Well done! The Bad: Initial tutorial missions leave something to be desired. This game doesn't (and shouldn't) hand hold a new player the whole way, but there should be a mini pre-tutorial applicable to either game-play mode, to help with learning the controls, and more step-by-step of the basics. The tutorial mission wants me to follow an NPC on my horse, when I don't even know the key binds to change speed, etc. I am not asking for total long-term hand-holding, but they made the learning curve pretty steep, which could put some new players off. My first gun fight is against multiple opponents, when I haven't even figured out how to brandish a weapon and aim! If nothing else give us a small practice area, and add a target range and ammo, and work into the story that they are giving us a change to limber up after being out of action for a while, or something. Some social aspects could use improving as well, it seems hard, at least at this point, to get together on the map with friends in this game if you don't have a persistent posse camp to log into. (And I am not at the point yet to know if that's even possible.) The Ugly: The interface and key binds. This is a port from console, I get it, but the system is clunky and counter-intuitive in places. It feels jumbled, and unnecessarily complicated at times, there seems to be little consistency to the layouts. Added to this you have to remember if it's a tap or hold, etc. It feels like they just tried to substitute keys for controller buttons rather than create a true PC UI. This seems to be a trend with console ports, I'd have like to have seen Rockstar break out of the mold on this one. I would feel better served if my health, stamina, and deadeye icons were in a row along either the top or bottom of the screen, and always visible, with a separate similar set of persistent icons for my horse. Having them as a border around my mini-map slows data acquisition, and feels cluttered. Having to pull out my weapon to see them is annoying. I can lose health and stamina out of combat, I should be able to monitor them easily when out of combat as well. If there is an option to re-arrange the placement of the HUD items, I haven't found it yet, I'd definitely want to place them differently. I haven't included any bugs or glitches in this because those aren't design elements, and RockStar seems to be honestly working on at least most of them. I ran into a few minor ones, such as my hat lagging behind in cinematic mode, (I admit it, I chuckled) but nothing game-breaking so far. From what I read while waiting for my budget to allow me to purchase the game, plus the 3.5 day download (groan again) I have seen more action on the bugs from RockStar in the past month than some other larger game companies have done in years. So long as they keep up the honest effort, I can be much more forgiving of them than those other companies. In closing, I'd rate this game 8/10, the immersiveness and level of detail easily outweighs the UI/Key issues, IMO. Fix those, it would easily be a 10/10. The only remaining issue is that I am terrible at this game, but having so much fun right from the start that I will enjoying improving. Unlike some games, even low level doesn't feel like a chore, or feel like a slog I have to get through to get to the "good part" The day has flown by, and everything I learned or discovered felt like an accomplishment. I have already brought a friend into the game, and he is having as much fun as I am. This is definitely on my short list of games I'd recommend.1 point

@McLawDiz if your using 3 star animals your material bar will go up much further, I had the hunting wagon on a previous character and to me at least it was a waste of money, the best thing to do imo is kill a npc and get his horse and have your own horse follow you, that way you end up with twice as much material, at the moment it is incredibly hard to level trader, my advice is to do other things and when you come across any animals just kill them and take them back to Cripps. Two star are ok for rabbits and birds etc but for bigger game you should really get 3 star if you can, I was looking for animals most of the day and I ended up with a 3 star pronghorn and a couple of 2 star turkeys, it's a hard time for hunting lately and I think that most players are struggling. I have seen players kill players just to steal a carcass which shouldn't be really happening but it is making the killers life a little easier, it's the hunter that suffers. Use the horse trick instead of buying a cart, it's much better.1 point

Well, I wouldn’t say they didn’t care (see past discussions of loading 5 rounds in your six shooter for just one example). That being said, this is a game and it should have a little more of that Hollywood flair...1 point

Good news, I lucked out. Got into a session with decent spawns, unlocked the horse!. Now it is onto Bounty Hunting!.1 point

Yes, there are parts of realism in this game you would never expect. Then other parts are right out there...1 point

I get that and I understand there are risks professional trick shooters, etc. will take that others simply shouldn't. .....just my initial reaction I had to the video of this dude in his kitchen showing a maneuver that goes against some of the most basic rules in the safe handling of firearms. ......but yeah, I'd leave it to the pros.1 point

I want to go back and watch it again. It has been a while since I have seen it. Wasn't that show from back in like 2003 or something?1 point

That is most likely down to a connection error which can happen on any online game. Rockstar takes a long time to respond anymore, used to be 3 days tops now you are lucky to hear back from them in under 10 days, if you even do get a reply.1 point

Yep, always good to one up those who shoot at us first.... even stories bring a tear to my eye. If youre in defensive mode dynamite arrows are great for hard to aim situations... without auto aim. For retribution; it would depend on how many players. Repeater with explosive ammo or navy revolvers with explosive ammo. Incendiary shotgun is good if your character has health because t lights up the griefer and the horse. If distance matters I would use the exploding rifle rounds. My normal travel is griefer minded so I have dynamite arrows fitted with bolt action .. that I switch to explosive if I see pvp possibility.. (another player - I dont grieve). I always travel in offensive mode because it has improved regarding amount of griefing, and I have a pvp arsenal that's usually pretty stocked.... often griefers are after school players and have used up all their good ammunition, or have not reached high enough levels. I suppose we all like hunting griefers. I have not had a chance to try the toxic bottles in pvp but they look like fun also... are fun against npcs When you are using butcher/nazar/fence you can switch to map mode and see if people are camping you (sometimes.. Im confused nowadays).... if the blue dots moving away t means they have their back to you and you can shoot them (in the back... how "unneighborly").... or get on your horse and ride away. If you're unsure of someone or just want them to leave you alone.. Use a poison arrow on their horse. By the time they stop and administer a remedy you'll be a memory to them.... Will stop someone from chasing you... permanently. If unsure of a player you can always put an object (even your own horse) between you and that player. Then they cannot injure you straight up. If you place yourself on another side of a herd.. their rifles will lock onto the anmals.. wagoneers, etc. A good way to frustrate a griefer into moving from position if you do it casually... like your picking daisies.1 point

I had a solo session yesterday (in posse with mate but then he left) but couldn’t set camp. Didn’t risk doing missions or forming my posse, just filled my wagon and satchel as much as I could. Got bored eventually though.1 point

I was able to play about ten Moonshine selling missions in a row yesterday (and I have REALLY been plagued by the black loading screen issue), so I thought I'd post what I did. I also investigated a little, so... here's what I found. First I had the shack near Emerald Station. That was a COMPLETE disaster, I could play exactly ONE selling mission and that was it. The rest was black loading screen after black loading screen. It's an incredibly busy area and an incredibly busy shack. There are players all over the place. So, I moved the shack down to the Bayou. (Not as busy but still fairly crowded sometimes.) I could do a few selling missions here and there before the game would decide to not let me anymore. I tried two things: Leave the shack and do other stuff while Moonshine is being prepared AND waiting inside for the Moonshine to be prepared. Both had the same results: Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. At one point it even reset everything while I was standing right there next to Marcel. What I noticed when it DIDN'T work, however, was that this occured whenever there were other players around, either outside the shack or just about to go inside (when it reset everything I went outside right away and saw that there were several players outside the shack, so, there definitely seems to be a connection here). Things then REALLY started to go south when someone apparently played a free roam mission near the shack (I don't know the exact details, I play in Defensive Mode and the game only tells you to switch to Offensive Mode to see nearby missions). THAT one made everyone inside my shack disappear and I couldn't get them to re-appear (going out and then back in usually fixed this issue for me although it would sometimes also reset my Moonshine progress so that Marcel had to start all over again), no matter what I tried to do. It really seems to be an issue of players interfering with each other in some way, something like R* servers not being able to handle all the players moving around in the same but also separate shacks, but also something else (will get to that). At one point the game even randomly threw me into a Bootlegger mission (lolwat???) although I had not started one, I was just standing next to Marcel, nowhere near the lady upstairs. I then moved my shack to the one location where I was sure things would be absolutely empty and barren - New Austin. And... io and behold... it worked. There were no players around and I could suddenly do selling missions and never even ONCE did everyone inside the shack disappear. HOWEVER, and here's the HOWEVER... this ONLY worked continuously with 30/24 minute Moonshine with Evergreen flavor sold to that Bret guy who offers the lowest payout. It did NOT work for more expensive Moonshine OR for buyers who offer more money than Bret. But it worked, and since I was only after the XP and not the money anyway (I prefer to make money through the Collector role), I was able to max out my Moonshiner level. It was a bit of a grind, but it did what it was supposed to do. I thought I'd post this. Maybe this will help others who are in a similar situation and have a lot of money already and are thus only after the XP and want to max out the role and then forget it's even there. The shack in New Austin is not the best, I know, and there's a delivery mission to Fort Mercer that will REALLY get on your nerves and lose you a bottle or more if you're not SUPER careful, but hey. It WAS nice to finally be able to actually play the game as it was intended. Well, some of it, anyway.1 point

At least I’m not the only one running around with an Evans... I like my LeMatte, but I’m trying out a pair of navy revolvers for the next while... So far I’m liking them.1 point

A couple of things...... First, please understand that RDR2.org is not affiliated with R* nor Take Two in any way. My suggestion is to use the in-game reporting feature and / or the R* Support site to report any player you suspect is hacking, cheating, using exploits or simply griefing in the game. Second, please don't use all caps when replying. There's no reason to shout at us and it just makes it more difficult to read your thread (I adjusted your title for you). Seems another mod deleted some other more colorful threads you had tried to create on the subject. Take a breath and relax. Our community is here to help where they can but just remember that we are not the cause of your woes.1 point

Yeah, the Free Roam menu can be accessed by pressing L while in Free Roam.1 point

I think they intend on adding a lot more but because of the bugs and issues they have been having, they kind of got delayed and pushed back. Think of everything they did with GTA V. Give them some time to add more.1 point

Sounds like a great idea to me. Having some special things that could say "I've been here a long time" would be great. No advantages, but like you said "bragging rights". As far as a perk, I've always thought "I'm level 168, I've bonded 8 horses, can I just pay to level 4 bond one now?"1 point
