I watched a vid where the guy used one of the cracks and kept going back and forth. Never really took a hit and thinned them out. I have to switch to automatic weapons and get my gear together.

The horde in the cave after meeting with the Nero guy. Have to do him this favor before he will help extract the main character and his wife. I just have to get through the horde. This is the one aspect of the game I don't find enjoyable where it forces you into these situations that result in me dying over an over again until I find a way a method, pattern, etc.

Tips and Tricks for Aspiring Naturalists Game Tips August 5, 2020 To help budding Naturalists boost their progress and conquer the animal kingdom in Red Dead Online, we've compiled a list of a few helpful tips and tricks to get started. Whether it's helping Harriet catalogue the kaleidoscope of natural life on the frontier or skinning specimens for Gus Macmillan to turn into beautiful, custom-made pieces of clothing, these tips should come in handy for anyone taking on the latest Frontier Pursuit. (source: Dande_Lion on Social Club) Getting Started and Ranking Up Visit Harriet Davenport at the Welcome Center in Strawberry to start your Naturalist journey. If you don't want to purchase the Sample Kit right away, it can be bought from her shop at any time. Harriet has set up shops at three locations across the map - West of Wallace Station, in the marshes of Lagras and near MacFarlane Ranch. Harriet sells .22 Sedative ammo for the Varmint Rifle, which you'll need in order to sedate and sample most animals. As soon as you wake up after your initial introduction to Harriet and the Naturalist Role, head back to one of Harriet's Shops and stock up. Bringing Animal Samples from sedated animals to Harriet is the fastest way to start earning Naturalist XP and RDO$. As you rank up, you'll start to gain access to a variety of new gameplay options to continue your journey. If you prefer, you can instead choose to bring carcasses or pelts to Gus Macmillan, who will pay RDO$ for these goods and can craft unique clothing from their hides for purchase. While working for Gus will bring you immediate benefits in the form of clothing, hunting for Gus does not provide Naturalist role XP. Starting at Naturalist Rank 5, Harriet's Sighting Missions will become available. These are multi-staged and storied hunts in which a successful sighting will award you with Naturalist XP should you decide to sample the Legendary Animal. Subsequently selling your Legendary Animal sample will earn you even more Naturalist XP and allow you to progress through the role more quickly, while choosing instead to skin the animal for Gus will earn you regular XP and a Legendary Pelt for Gus to craft with - the choice is yours. Harriet's "Poached Animals" Missions are also a great way to gain Naturalist XP. These can be accessed by speaking with Harriet at her shop, selecting "Missions" and pressing Square/X/Space to launch them. There will be a cooldown period before you can launch another mission. Check your Animal Field Guide - found in your Satchel or the Item Wheel - to track your progress. Each unique Animal Sample sold to Harriet will result in a stamp appearing over the corresponding Animal in your Guide. Once each Animal within a single Category has been stamped, highlight your completed Category and select the “Trade In” option to receive a hefty payout of RDO$ & RP. Once you’ve traded in a fully stamped Category, your stamp progress will reset and you can begin stamping them once again. To seek out Legendary Animals, check your Legendary Animal Map (accessed via the Satchel). Turning in Legendary Animal Samples will earn more Role XP than regular samples. As you rank up through the Naturalist Role, more Legendary Animals will begin to show up in Free Roam. Speak with Harriet regularly so she can mark these new discoveries on your Legendary Animal Map. Complete any available Naturalist Daily Challenges to pull down Naturalist XP and Gold. At Naturalist Rank 4, you will start to receive invites to Naturalist Free Roam Events - these will award large amounts of Naturalist XP for participating and some are also a great opportunity to get samples for Legendary Animals. At Naturalist Rank 7, you may begin to come across poachers in Free Roam who have captured certain animals. Deal with them as appropriate and release the trapped animals to gain even more Naturalist XP. Tools of The Trade Remember to double check the ammo you’re using on your Varmint Rifle to make sure you don't kill an animal you’re trying to sedate. You can change your selected ammo on a weapon with the d-pad or mouse while using the Weapon Wheel (LB/L2/Tab key). It takes multiple shots to sedate an animal - the amount of shots varies depending on the animal’s size. Hits to critical areas such as the head or heart will down the animal faster. Smaller animals such as birds and squirrels cannot be sedated, so be careful not to kill them with sedative ammo (unless you're planning on selling these materials to Gus, of course) Sedative ammo still does damage to an animal once it’s been knocked out. Once you have successfully sedated an animal, you will see your reticule turn to a red cross and hear a distinctive sound. A sedated animal can’t be sampled while in water – use the lasso to pull it to the shore. You can’t use the lasso on smaller animals (e.g. water snakes) so it’s best to stalk them until they reach the shore before taking your shot. You can also jump in and gently nudge them to shore if they manage to make it back into the water. Animals will wake up naturally once you’ve left the surrounding area. Many will run off, but aggressive animals may attack again if you stick around. Optionally, you can use Animal Reviver (available at Harriet's Shop) to revive a sedated animal and gain additional Role XP. The Bounty Hunter’s Eagle Eye+ ability will help track animals more efficiently. Twitter user @station069 recommends using Refined Binoculars and Paint it Black to quickly bring down animals When dealing with pack animals, particularly predators, focusing your tranquilizer fire on one specimen helps avoid wasting ammunition. Remember to keep an eye on the number of samples in your satchel. While you can (and should!) store multiple samples at once for efficiency, you can only hold a set amount at a time. Harriet Davenport Redditor u/Curiedoesthestream shared this moment right before incurring Harriet's wrath after harming a few too many animals. Fill out each requirement in the Animal Field Guide to complete progress for each animal. Photographs can be taken with either the Camera or the Advanced Camera. The animal must be fully conscious and in-frame to count towards your progress. Hold off with the itchy trigger finger if you want to complete your Animal Field Guide - you can't study, sample or effectively photograph an animal once it's dead. Killing too many animals may upset Harriet. If she gives you the cold shoulder, you may need to allow her a few minutes before she's ready to speak with you again. You can complete the "study" requirement for animals by aiming at them and pressing the appropriate button when prompted. Per Redditor u/fusi9n: "Study every animal you come across. I've just been aiming my rifle at them as I ride past." Gus Macmillan While Gus will pay good money for a full carcass, he cannot craft unique clothing from intact animals. If you are seeking his craftsmanship in the form of a new coat or otherwise, you must skin your bounty before selling it to him. Selling the pelt itself will unlock the related garment set for purchase. Additionally, certain animal parts will help unlock special Trinkets for purchase. Sell Legendary Animal Pelts to Gus and then browse his Garment Sets section to view craftable Legendary coats and items. @McRagstig staying warm in the Legendary Moonstone Coat, courtesy of Gus Macmillan. You cannot skin an animal after it's been sedated, even if you've revived it. Bear this in mind and approach each hunt with either the intention to sample or skin - not both. As more Legendary Animals are added to Red Dead Online in the coming weeks, many more clothing options and items will become available from Gus. Advanced Camera Purchasing an Advanced Camera can be done through the handheld catalogue or on Social Club. While you can use the standard Camera to snap photos of animals for your Field Guide, you may benefit from the Advanced Camera’s increased maneuverability. While in Handheld mode, you can walk around and crouch with the Advanced Camera. Make sure to snap your photo before using sedative shots on your target - photos of a tranquilized or deceased animal won’t count toward your Field Guide progress. The Advanced Camera’s viewfinder will turn green when an animal is in frame, so you can get the perfect shot every time. Harriet sells a Blending Tonic which will allow you to get closer to wildlife to snap it before it flees or attacks. As with the regular Camera, head to the Social Club menu option in-game where you can edit photos and upload them to your Social Club profile. Legendary Animals @kodiikat shared an image of the Legendary Inahme Elk in its natural habitat on Instagram. Check your Legendary Animal Map (accessed via your Satchel in the "Documents" section) for available Legendary Animals to track and hunt in Free Roam. Legendary Animals will often attempt to run away from you – make sure to have plenty of Bitters for you and Stimulant for your horse before seeking one out. Use some Legendary Animal Pheromones (available at Harriet's Shop) if you’ve lost sight of the animal. It is not advised to use Legendary Animal Pheromones until you've already received a notification that there is a Legendary Animal in the area. If you're struggling to find Legendary Animals in Free Roam, check out the Legendary Animal Map that Harriet gave you, and make sure to visit her often for updates on which animals have been spotted and where. Completing more fields in the Animal Field Guide will also result in more information on the Legendary Animal’s preference for time of day and weather. Throughout your progression in the Naturalist Role, you will rank up your Eagle Eye making it easier to track and find Legendary Animals. To help you find each Legendary Animal, try paying attention to their favored weather conditions as well as the times at which they're most active: Legendary Zizi Beaver is particularly active around dusk or dawn. Legendary Moon Beaver prefers moister weather and is also more active at either end of the day. Legendary Coji Boar typically appears earlier in the day. Legendary Wakpa Boar roams during the daytime in wetter weather. Legendary Katata Elk enjoys drizzly/foggy weather and is most active during the daytime Legendary Ozula Elk emerges later in the day, also preferring drizzly/foggy weather Legendary Ota Fox roams at dawn and dusk, primarily during clear or overcast weather Legendary Marble Fox also prefers around sunrise/sunset and is most active during clear or overcast weather Legendary Tatanka Bison (unlocks at Naturalist Rank 5) can be found during daytime hours, often preferring rainy/drizzly weather Legendary Winyan Bison (unlocks at Naturalist Rank 5) is a nocturnal creature, unlikely to be found during storms or rainfall. Legendary Emerald Wolf (unlocks at Naturalist Rank 5) usually prowls at dusk or at night, striking during rainy or stormy weather. Legendary Onyx Wolf (unlocks at Naturalist Rank 5) is a night-dwelling animal, showing its face in clear or overcast weather. Legendary Iguga Cougar (unlocks at Naturalist Rank 10) typically hunts at dusk during rainy or drizzly conditions. Legendary Maza Cougar (unlocks at Naturalist Rank 10) is most active in the day, also preferring wetter weather. Many more Legendary Animals are available to track and hunt via Harriet's Sighting Missions, which unlock at Naturalist Rank 5 and can be launched by speaking with her at her Shop. Additional Tips When dealing with poachers in missions or in Free Roam, be sure to gather samples from any animals you've freed before selling those to Harriet for RDO$ and Role XP rewards. Also loot any poachers you've dispatched as they may be carrying pelts or other valuables. Various baits that you've crafted or purchased from the Catalogue can help attract animals to the area for studying, sedating or hunting. If you’re after pelts or carcasses, it's always a good idea to hunt efficiently and reduce damaging pelts - many animals can be lassoed and killed with a knife for a perfect pelt. For bigger game, clean headshots with the Bolt-Action or Rolling Block Rifle can help you get a one-shot kill.

Yeah, it made a big difference and the performance boost was a plus. .....won't be the same on the PS5 although I'm hoping it's compatible with it so I can still store some games on it like the ones my kid plays which are not as demanding. Mine is the Samsung T5 SSD (external) I picked up at Best Buy for just over $100 on sale last year. I started going digital a few years back. It's just more convenient for me and as far as downloads, I simply plan a day ahead letting games load up at night typically. I was reluctant at first but now that I'm buying games exclusively via digital, I don't miss the disks. ....although I will be opting for the BluRay drive version of the PS5 since we do use my PS for the media center. The PS4 will likely stay next to it for a while before being moved elsewhere in the house used mainly for a media hub.

Ghost of Tsushima is a really good game. They say they took inspiration from RDR and it shows. It's got that exploration aspect to it with random events and side missions, etc. sprinkled in with the story missions. I'm really liking it although I'm trying to finish Days Gone first which I finally picked up about a month or two ago at a big discount.

Here's a Sharps with a period scope being shown by Iain McCallum. I would imagine a rifle like the Springfield Trapdoor would pose it's own challenges to mount a scope simply by it's design. However, the following video shows how some of these scopes worked including the recoil action which is interesting. .....which in turn could have possibly cleared the "trap door" to allow reloading. Either way, I'll wager a lot of these setups were custom involving work by talented gunsmiths like the one mention in this video. Some sort of offset rig could have also been implemented to allow reloading on a Springfield.

They've never been on here or made themselves known as far as I know. ....but yeah, I think you're limited to 500 characters on that site but that doesn't mean you can't submit multiple ideas. I'd just try to shorten your responses and use a word processing program or similar to edit your submissions first. .....to make sure they'll fit.

Hi and welcome to the forums. I saw you posted this on Steam as well and it seems you wanted this message to reach R*. ....so just an FYI that this site is not affiliated with R* or Take Two. However, you're more than welcome and we encourage these kinds of discussions in the community. R* doesn't have an official forum so we really only have each other to bounce ideas off of. They do however have a feedback site but it is more of a suggestion box.

....so is it that the sedative is ineffective or simply takes more time to take effect? ....unless of course you pump them full of 'em. I guess my question is how does the sedative work in relation to its use. Is it like firearms in the game where they do "X" amount of damage, does it possibly have a timed effect or both or.....?
-
You may want to create a new thread for your issue in this online section. I don't have a problem that you posted it here (that's fine), but I'm afraid your issue won't get the attention it deserves and has the chance of getting lost among the other discussions occurring here on this topic.
-
Hi Krimzon and welcome. Sorry I can't help you with your issue but here's hoping someone can. If anything, at least it seems your getting some level of support from R*. I wish you luck on getting this sorted.
-
Ouch.... Yeah, if you uninstalled, I can see your dilemma. btw, I bought an external SSD for my PS4 a while back. I had 16 games downloaded as of late and just removed a couple yesterday I had no interest in anymore. It's great not having to worry about space and the big bonus is that even through the USB 3 port, it's still faster than the internal drive. It made a difference in games that I moved over when I first got it. ......so games like RDR2 that I don;t play often but expect I might again, I just leave on there. Same with GTA and so on.
-
Yeah, I was looking forward to expanded outlaw and/or law roles but seems there are a lot of folks open to this kind of activity which is cool too. I think the take-away from all this is that the blackout has finally lifted as we are now seeing that there is still a future for the game (in relation to updates, etc.). What I'm most interested in is how RDO will evolve with the new PS5. I'm hoping we get more news about that and I'm crossing my fingers there are plans to take advantage of the new hardware similar to what they're doing with GTA. Either way, it's nice to see some life around here again.
-
Glad to see others enjoying the new features and fixes. I'm curious to see if the animal populations have increased for me as well. I'll probably start playing again in the coming days.
-
Saw a couple folks comment about the animal population increasing but I think we'll have to wait and see. I'll wager even if it resolves for some, there may be others that could still have the issue. .....or just boot up the game and see for yourself.
-
.....a post simply meant to help inform the community using R* own words from their Tweet but yeah, don't read too far into it. I'm confused..... You're upset that you can't hook up with randoms but then in the next breath say that you don't want to? Well, the good news is that you don't need to matchmake in the game if you don't want to. Hell, I never liked working with randoms myself in nearly all team based scenarios in the games I play. ....so, if you're new to RDO, try to find friends via sites like these or discord channels, R* Social Club, PSN Communities (if on PS4), etc. Here at RDR2.org we have a Posse Recruitment sub forum where you can post what you're looking for or you can respond to one of the threads in that section. Several of the posses that advertise do have Discord channels or their own websites you can check out. If you can get over your issue with randoms, another way to find RDO friends is by sucking it up and joining others in their activities, posses, etc. You never know who you might come across and yes, while others can prove to be a pain, there are always those few that can end up being good gaming friends. As much as I dislike pairing up with randoms, I have to admit that I have found a couple who decent folks willing to play the game together sharing in each others activities. ....oh btw, welcome to the forums and good luck.

I checked my GB balance and it was just over 6.

RED DEAD ONLINE: THE NATURALIST NOW AVAILABLE Track Legendary Animals, Wield New Weapons, and More Track, hunt and study the wonders of the animal kingdom in Red Dead Online’s latest Frontier Pursuit, The Naturalist. Explore diverse locales, encounter majestic new Legendary Animals, and forge your own path as you choose whether to use these findings to learn new skills or bolster your resources and material gains. Accomplished conservationist Harriet Davenport is looking for adventurers with an affinity for wildlife to help her track down specimens and further her extensive knowledge of the animals of the five states. Pursue these fascinating creatures in the wild, then cautiously sedate them to obtain samples for Harriet and be equitably rewarded. At odds with Harriet’s mission to understand and preserve wildlife is the retired big game hunter Gus Macmillan, who will compensate you handsomely for your hunting skills. If your tastes favor fine clothing made from animal hides over the conservation of the natural world, Gus provides a wide range of options from the hauls you deliver. Be warned though, Harriet will take notice of your poaching activities if you try to play both sides of this quarrel. Assisting Harriet Davenport in her Naturalist efforts by obtaining samples without killing will earn unique rewards while tracking these creatures. Use the new Sedative Varmint Cartridges with the Varmint Rifle to sedate and sample, and savvy Naturalists can use Animal Reviver to ensure vulnerable animals are not left prone and endangered. Delivering animal parts, skins, and hides to retired hunter Gus Macmillan will get you high quality garments and other unique items with special benefits. Take advantage of the notorious sportsman’s crafting and tailoring skills to obtain Legendary Animal Coats and other apparel, along with Animal Trinkets that bestow certain advantages. Visit the Welcome Center in the town of Strawberry to meet up with both Harriet and Gus - and document your findings with the new Animal Field Guide - a compendium featuring the abundant species found across all of the frontier’s distinct habitats. Tracking, photographing, and sampling animals will add their information to your Animal Field Guide and progress you along the Naturalist role. As you build out the Animal Field Guide and continue through the Specialist Role you will open up a range of new items, skills, and gameplay to explore. Everything from a new Naturalist focused breed of Horses, to bespoke clothing and accessories, to new Tonics and Tonic Recipes. These include personal Weight Loss and Weight Gain Tonics, Animal Revivers and special Tonics that mitigate weather effects or increase your ability to sneak up on potential animal subjects. You’ll also learn new skills like Mercy Kills and the ability to pitch Wilderness Camps, and open up the opportunity to work with Ms. Davenport to stop the proliferation of nefarious animal poachers by raiding their encampments and liberating caged animals. LEGENDARY ANIMALS As your Naturalist activities progress, you’ll start to encounter Legendary Animals – these distinctive creatures can be discovered both in Free Roam and through Animal Sighting assignments commissioned by Harriet. Using the Legendary Animal Map as a guide, you’ll learn the locations of their native habitats and then follow information in the Animal Field Guide to locate each one – ultimately deciding whether to obtain samples for Harriet and earn precious rewards, or poach them and have Gus turn their hides into ostentatious apparel for your wardrobe. Explore the world now to find Legendary Cougars, Foxes, Boars, Beavers, Wolves, Bison and Elk – with more Legendary Animals emerging throughout the frontier in the weeks to come. NEW ADVANCED CAMERA, WEAPONS AND FREEMODE EVENTS To aid in studying animals or even just for hobbyists with a keen eye, a new Advanced Camera is available from the Wheeler, Rawson and Co. Catalogue, allowing for increased mobility along with an improved suite of camera features that includes a set of filters. There are also new weapons, including a customizable Improved Bow and the Elephant Rifle, made for taking down especially large animals. The Naturalist also features a pair of new animal-based Free Roam Events. LEGENDARY ANIMAL PROTECTION Work together to defend a Legendary Animal from poachers as it migrates across the frontier. But don’t get too close to it while doing so, or you may be seen as a potential threat. WILD ANIMAL TAGGING Join up with other players to sedate and tag animals from certain species in order to obtain samples and discover a bonus Legendary Animal, while also dealing with potential poachers. I had to look back at that comment you quoted me on. No wonder I didn't remember since it was over a year ago. 😄 Yeah, glad to see you back. Many folks haven't been posting lately due to the lack of updates / news. Hopefully that all changes for the rest of the year and perhaps into the launch of the new consoles depending what plans (if any) they have for that.
-
Hey haven't come back since they posted so yeah, that was my assumption as well. Sounds like a victim of hackers.

Well, I think any of the issues related to populations of animals, NPCs, etc. and related frame rate drops in towns should be something they could rectify on the new consoles as I'm sure that is directly related to physical limitations of the current systems. Some of these things could even be increased. Remember how they did that with GTAO when they ported it from PS3 to PS4? .....increased NPC/road traffic, upped the graphics and so on? I've often thought what this could mean for games like DayZ that have struggled since release on PS4 with performance. ....although in that case, they have other issues not related to hardware at all that they still wrestle with.

😄 ....nah, I don't think anyone could have really predicted this. There's even more to come through the year apparently so maybe there's hope RDO will get further attention with the next gen consoles in the way of enhancements, expansions, etc. like they are talking about with GTAO.
