I feel the way you do also. Very frustrating to get messed with for no reason.

Good news is they get nothing, a small amount of XP. Killing an alligator gives more.

I just change lobbies by using the menu and selecting online. Then I choose another state to go to like Lemoine. You get a different set of players.

This website is your answer, also. Sooo much info being shared.

For quick help, Ask us on this forum and we will gladly answer.

Look me online and maybe we can join up.

I just wanted to thank everyone that contributed to this thread, Thank you.

I let my anxiety and confusion get to me and it really had me crawling for the door, but you guys convinced me to stick it out and try a few things and as a result I made it to the other side.

I figured out my mistakes, and I was able to get a foot hold in the community online and I think going forward it is going to be just fine.

I had a pretty good experience last night even though I was chased twice, killed once shot in the back of the head while trying to get to my camp and eventually I was surrounded and attacked while fishing by at least 8 players, it was intense, they were on the cliff's along the Dakota River as well as on shore all around me, and across the river, I must have snoozed as I never saw them coming, and there were a lot of dots.

I survived it however and it never felt like being harassed or hassled like the guys did to me the other day that tried to take my horse and were just following me to get a reaction, that sucked, but this was, well fun.

I didnt mind the attack, at first I thought, are you kidding me, 8 of you to attack one new guy fishing, ? but then I killed 5 of them and made my way home safely, the remaining dots didnt even give chase.

So to me thats not griefing, or whatever, its playing the game, I wish they had left me alone, but as long as I have a fighting chance and understand the situation then Im good with it.

So thanks again for encouraging me to stick it out a bit longer and try a few things to make the game a little more enjoyable.

Its embarrassing to get overwhelmed by anxiety and then sleep on it for two days and then feel stupid for having been aggravated or upset.

I was able to retrieve my gold, buy a fishing pole, and head to a few spots where I can catch my limit in Salmon just 5 minutes from Valentine and just fished my way into the next level.

I really want to try to follow the instructions they gave me in the beginning back in Blackwater about going to the various Sheriffs for work or something, but when I went to the "scales icon" in yellow, it started searching for other players, presumably because it is 2 or more players I guess for whatever it is they want me to do?

Anyway it never connected or found other players so I wasn't able to do the mission, so I just went back to fishing.

Hopefully that isn't a constant problem where there aren't enough people on the server or not any that are looking to do those missions as they are early missions that people probably did right away when they started playing.

Thanks again, you guys really made the difference for me, this community is really strong, and I like that.

I do enjoy a good fight as much as I enjoy the respect of waving and passing another player who is doing their own thing and not trying to force them to engage me, being citizens in this map we are all neighbors and citizens of a community and to me being neighbors and helping one another and protecting our neighbors is a lot of fun too, it is actually satisfying to me to see another player, say hello, then ride away to go hunting or fishing and have that be the entire encounter it just feels normal to me, like in life.

There will be plenty of conflict, and mission specific stuff to do, but in the meantime in the main lobby or world that we are in together I like feeling part of a larger community, its a good feeling.

Those are the online story missions which I believe are quite buggy right now. They randomly pair you up with up to 3 other players and I believe there are currently 8 of them overall. Some you need high honor to do and some require low honor.

Glad you had a change of heart. You'll be leveled up with top notch gear in no time.😀

Hi Lumper just noticed something about your topic ... you said you was killed at your camp , but maybe it wasnt Your camp.  u can actually get into other players camp it have the same coloured icon on the minimap , also  just a trick for you if you get harassed by players like that - Press Leftpad - go to Quick join - then click on story on-call mission , u decide if u want to do it or just quit the matchmaking once u got teleported away , if u quit , you will be in a new phase , new place , no one to bothers you. i understand that players griefing you kike that aint easy , i suggest you to buy the varmint rifle and lancaster repeater , they are the best for quick headshots , and just saying in my opinion if a players that try to kill me or that killed me , and neither of us did a Parley , in my opinion it mean that he want more ... or might be coming for me

Fair enough, but after 40 years of gaming this is the only game that has really stressed me out this way, and to be fair my anxiety disorder is something that developed over the past 10 years, in that time I have found that games like rdr2 do actually help me, they allow me to "shut it off" my problem normally is I can not stop thinking / worrying about things, even if it doesnt make sense or I cant change it, it is a huge burden, but playing immersive games really takes me away, I dont worry or over think stuff, I just play and have a good time.

The mulitplayer experience is new to me as I have almost always avoided it with a few exceptions, boxing online, golf, COD WW2, and Star Wars Bft 2 online, and all those were very pleasant online.

Well boxing is full of cheats and poor sports, lol but otherwise its good.

I was overly confused, that didnt help, I couldnt get straight answers on things, that triggers desperation and then what I thought things were like, I foudn out they were not and so all that in the same two days really took a toll, but I am nothing if not self aware and adaptable.

So, I am giving it another try and with a better more clear understanding of things, and I think I will be just fine.

Im a very active and outdoor person, but in winter I do not go outside at all, ever, I hate the cold, I have several sever injuries that make it hard and I cant afford a fall, anyway the lack of natural sunlight gives me that season depression stuff so I made it my plan last year, in winter I play my xbox, and this winter was the first time I have really done that since the xbox 360 was new.

It really worked, 8 weeks of gaming playing only rdr2 was very therapeutic for me, I loved it.

Now winter here is nearly over, I can start going out again, I compete as a semi pro disc golfer and that keeps me busy all spring summer and fall, but from Thanksgiving til April fools day, its all about the games.

The only stressful thing all winter was trying to figure out this online lol and after two difficult days, I sorted it out with the help of a bunch of super nice people here on these boards, their kindness towards me instead of flaming me or making fun really made all the difference and was a turning point.

I didnt expect that at all, I figured mostly I would hear what you said, dont play, but not a single person said that, and what you said was not offensive to me at all, I completely understand the comment and I know you weren't being sarcastic.

Thanks again to each of you, hope ill see out there, when I do say hello before you fire.

Thanks buddy,

all god stuff and I will def try that join/quit thing if that happens repeatedly.

I think the first time it happened was the worst because I didnt understand it I didnt know they could lead my horse even though I set the settings not to allow it, I didnt know what their intentions were so I panicked, I shot at them for taking my horse, of course they baited me, and I understand that now, at the time I was very confused and angry and wondered why are they following me and why are they hanging around my camp riding their horses over all my stuff and just acting disrespectful.

That combined with the confusion over my account mistake I made and looking for my gold was just too much, but im past that now, over it, and ready to forge on.

Ive been killed since and for no reason by some asshat over nothing in the back of the head while entering my camp, but whatever I dont let that bother me, it is annoying but meh, not worth getting upset over.

Thanks again for your comments.

It is annoying but when it keeps happening, it just gets frustrating. I am all for PVP but there should be some kind of cooldown or escape from it since some people are only on there to annoy others.

I think the parlay kind of does that, you get 10 minutes anyway lol.

Generally assume "to make progress need to fight with much skilled enemy."  So just relax and find way to fight him. If u stressed a lot just change session.

imo if  people can't handle dealing with hostiles players..  Stop playing the game.  Since its really part of the game.

People like me play this game just waiting for something to pop off, because without any sort of hostile players around, this game would be boring as hell.

If the argument was about not having private lobbies so you can play in peace.. I would totally support that, because private lobbies is a 100% must.

But in public games, its meant to be a free for all.   Griefers are just the must needed bad guys that make this game exciting.

R* already punishes players who defend themselves by adding a kill tax and making their blips red.  Which in turn makes people think Red blips are griefers..     Which sort of makes people blip racists.. (Because red blips just means they killed a lot of players in a short time, not that they are griefers)

Anyone new to Red Dead..

1.)  Play the Single player campaign to get used to the basics of the game, inventory use and how the guns work/feel.

2.) Play PVP game modes till you lose your mind.  The more you die.. the more you learn.  Every kill you get makes you understand how pvp works even more.

3.)  After losing your mind in pvp modes dealing with tons of hostile players at once.  A few 'griefers' in free roam is almost a non issue.

4.) If worse comes to worse,  Find a new lobby or parlay.

Fair enough,

my complaint isnt necessarily people wanting to fight, I just didnt understand a lot about the game including how to protect myself and things werent making sense to me, the people I ran into didnt fight me, they acted friendly followed me to my first ever camp, led my horse away somehow and when I reacted they killed me.

I was frustrated as I dint understand how they cold lead my horse after I set it not to allow it, waving at me, but then not talking to me or anything and just riding all over my camp acting foolish, etc.. It was confusing to me.

But I have since learned a lot and I know what they were doing and although I think it was crappy to do, I get it.

I since have been attacked several times, once by 8 red dots at once, I fought back and killed 5 of them and escaped, it was good fun, I dont mind dying or being killed, I mind being manipulated and taken advantage of when I Was just trying to learn the very basics on my own.

Another person thought it was funny to shoot me in the head as I entered my camp so I had to respawn and try again to get back to my camp from a long way away, it was inconvenient but meh, whatever.

Anyway I am way past that now, I appreciate your point of view and opinion.

For my past few hours of gaming, I’ve been revisiting GTA, since a friend gifted me a copy. I’ve developed a whole new appreciation for how good we have it on RDR for griefing... at least I don’t have hours of my work thrown away in 30 seconds because some idiot on a flying motorcycle armed with homing rockets decided to blow up the garbage truck I was given to make deliveries in.

Im finding it nearly impossible to make any progress in that game in its current state, and it’s so ridiculous I’m not even sure I want to make progress...

I did try to knife a guy that pushed me over the edge of the roof in Blackwater, but I failed miserably. And to be fair, I did spend a fair amount of time wandering around town making the ‘shoot ‘em up’ gesture while they were fighting amongst themselves and farming cops. I probably deserved it lol

I had a thought last night about this, something you said made me think.

You said, "imo if  people can't handle dealing with hostiles players..  Stop playing the game.  Since its really part of the game."

and although currently it is part of the game, it shouldnt be and doesnt need to be.

I made a post today about the difference between an outlaw and a griefer in terms of how things were and therefore should be in game, if we are trying to simulate the wild west anyway.

Killing was definitely part of life but with a code a reason, call a guy a cheater, or a coward or a liar and expect to fight, maybe even die, but you didnt see guys just killing strangers by shooting them in the back for no reason and leave, not even steal money or anything from them, if they werent a witness to a crime or ddint offend you or challenge you then you had no motive to kill them and usually didnt, people didnt fear going to the butcher, the game can be so much better if we eliminate the needless murdering of strangers for no reason and create a means to do that, a dual and challenge system,  if you cheat in poker, you might get caught and then challenged to a fight or a draw, etc..

if you just arbitrarily kill people you should lose honor, and money and then everything should costs more for you, if this is your behavior.

So say you kill a stranger by shooting him in the back, you woudl get a high bounty on you that any player can collect, you would be marked on the map and so any player in the game woudl then see you with a $ sign on your head, and anyone who captures or kills you woudl earn the bounty.

Plus you would lose 10% to 25 % of your money when caught.

Things like this can fix this system we have now.

Just a thought.

Fyi.....  This thread has offered the OP some sound advice on how they could better their chances in Free Roam in its existing state.  I don't think we need another thread to rehash reasons why we think griefing should be allowed or removed completely from the game.

@lumper, I merged that other thread you mentioned in with the main discussion in this forum on the topic.  If it's all the same to you, I think I will closed this thread as I really don't see a need to have the same arguments in multiple threads.

.....unless you would rather I merge it with the one thread?  You tell me what you would prefer I do.  Thanks.  I was ok with it simply fading away but now I don't think that will happen.
