Is griefer hunting worth it?

Question

Yes! My Posse is committed to griefer extermination. Yesterday, some misguided cowboy killed one of us and it was on. He or she was shot, again and again and again, right out of the server. The four or five times I took him out, I was scoring 40 to 45 points for each kill:

kill + special ammo + headshot + eyes wide shut + last chance (single sawed off) or distance.

You could rightfully call it Bloodsport. But I'm calling it productive and fun. I might even start trying to attract the scum-drums 📢 "Come 'n git it!" 🧨

@The Coca-Cola Kid will do. The timing is the problem because when I'm about to sign off I see you coming on 🥺 I am Central u.s. Time zone but I'm either running with an Aussie Posse or my own comprised of Western Europeans.... So that's no reflection on you but on me. But I've got to say I scored nearly 250xp in what, 15 mins.

Load your horse up with a bunch of animals and ride around like bait.  That seems to bring out the trolls...lol.

But you're right.  It is fun.   Sometimes the highlight of the night.

We are all xbox, sadly.

But it is fun as a newly minted over-50 to get revenge on the dirtbag griefers who would hunt me for no reason, often while I was just fishing. Now when they take a cheep shot at me I call over my posse on mic and we go after the cowards until they leave.

Last night I had a posse of 4 kill me while fishing. I came back and shot all 4. They then proceeded to come at me from all sides with explosive rounds and incendiary buckshot. I kept running towards them doing the jig. They were getting irritated according to the language they were using. I kept silent until they wasted all their ammo. Finally said guess you need duck fat now. Slowly road away without any issues.

No. Every griefer hunting group eventually turns into a griefing group because it is impossible to be completely accurate in know ing who is griefing and who isn't.

Plus, surprise surprise, a real griefer WANTS an entire group killing them. That means an entire group is getting to know the griefer's gamer tag.

Griefer hunters might boost their own egos maybe, but they're not doing the game any good.

Defend yourself from griefing if you need to, but don't hunt other players.

In the examples given in this thread, that's exactly what they are doing but also reciprocating the attackers action.

Just because some people choose dish it back out to griefers doesn't mean they are going to go hunt down innocent players.

@Miltonastic We are saving your butt from the Griefers. We are innocent players. The only time we kill without provocation is the occasional NPC. If you raise a gun and aim or shoot? We are either going to send you to "Say hello to Jesus" or shoot you right off the map into another playground to grief other players.

Actually 1 hour PVP in Freeroam is verry effektive in grinding XP´s as you get a lot per shot if you use all the bonuses awarded for the different killing styles. Thats actually all you get, as there are no Dollars or Gold bonuses. If you find a Player enjoying PVP (yes there are many even lots here seem not to belive so) this can be a good boost and I think thats much more honor full then puting a tape on the controler to make the player move and enter a modus for the entire night, (think thats stopped by R+ alreaddy).

Please stopp announcing you are hunted by any players. This game was reduced to passive modes and parley function so actualy a hunt is not possible if you are using this Options properly.

A) No, not every person who reacts to griefers by shooting them will turn into a griefer. That is two entirely different mindsets. The griefer mindset usually is: "I want to mess this person up so they pay attention to me/make me feel powerful/etc. The victim mindset is usually: "This guy is repeat-shooting me/my horse for no reason.  I want to give him back some of his own medicine.

B) It IS possible to know. If someone shoots you out of the blue with no context in the game for doing so, and then shoots you again when you respawn. He. Is. A. Griefer.

That is not what I was talking about, obviously, plus I added the caveat about defending oneself.

Going after a player that has just griefed you or your group is perfectly justified, but is different from what I was talking about.

I'm talking about these self-described griefer hunting groups that act as judge, jury and executioner based on hearsay. I don't know how many times some player separated from their group has fired on me, then I hear in chat "I dunno, this guy just shot at me". So when I fight back and the other player won't quit, suddenly I started it and I'm a griefer. Cause hey, so and so wouldn't lie!

It can get lonely out on the trails when you are a lone rider. Sometimes you can go hours without seeing a single player. Even then most don’t interact. Those that do either wave and run away or wave and shoot you. The person I usually ride with, we’ll call her Bonnie to my Clyde, hasn’t been up to playing for a while due to the little one on the way any time now. Once you have learned to fend for yourself, griefers are much less bothersome.

So, I guess you could say, I invite the griefers when they cross my path. That interaction, tho can be irritating, also provides player interaction. That by no means justifies hunting down griefers as sport. That would make you just as guilty? Right or No? I mean, just because you have a posse with guns doesn't make you responsible for upholding the law does it?

Ok so your a vigilante? Whats the difference?

You don't save my butt from anything, thanks.

I personally don't call in help unless with my posse and my posse mates are being negatively effected. And believe me, my posse doesn't require your assistance in the slightest.

Someone killing you is not, I repeat, is not, someone griefing you. Even if you're in defensive. Killing other players is part of the game.

Revenge for someone killing you is part of the game as well, but you're not "griefer hunting" for crying out loud. You're battling another player.

Griefing is a player, or group of players, that attack another player or players repeatedly when it's obvious the player being attacked is outmatched or doesn't want a fight. There are other forms like running into shops, or glitching, etc.

Just because someone decides they're playing a bad girl/guy, and part of that is gunning down random players, doesn't make them a griefer. They're playing well within the "rules" of the game, as it were.

This is exactly why "Griefer Hunting"  groups are so problematic and in my opinion to be avoided. There's simply too many players out there that can't seem to get what griefing actually is and exactly who is doing it.

A clear definition of a griefer according to Google Dictionary: a person who harasses or deliberately provokes other players or members in order to spoil their enjoyment.

Now you decide. Are they trying to deliberately spoil your enjoyment or just enlighten theirs?

No, Zamp. It wasn't once. He killed me and my Posse member more than once. Executed our horses. Repeatedly attacked, aggressively, tenaciously. He didn't ride away and we wouldn't have chased him if he did because that is not the way we roll.  He went away voluntarily when he realized he would not prevail. @DNMNetTech his motives didn't matter--whether getting his yayas or  being a jackwagon. His repeated behaviors did @Miltonastic  It's evident you're not familiar with the Posse announcements for the blue hare crew or Bluegrass 'shiners. Are are methodologies and chief aims her clearly outlined, and strictly adhered to by myself first and as the Posse leader and enforcer of those principles, second. You are making assumptions and casting aspersions oh, also a choice and certainly allowed. They do not fit me or my Posse in our pursuits. FYI, our mini-map indicators were and remained blue.  Whether level 235 or 12, my Posse members love riding with me because we have fun and accomplish the objectives I have stated and maintained right up front. And I've booted people for not following them, especially if they demonstrate griefer behavior. To use your own words: "Griefing is a player, or group of players, that attack another player or players repeatedly when it's obvious the player being attacked is outmatched or doesn't want a fight...Revenge for someone killing you is part of the game"  Wewill not assist you, but this I will swear and be damned: if your group and my group are simultaneously attacking a hideout, and you or one of your members decides to shoot at us while mutual looting is going on, it's on. A lot of your statements are assumptive, conjecture, and not based on the fact. But when I or my Posse are subjected to it, we will respond and do so appropriately. Have a good time out there cowboy. And if you ever need a spot in a posse? Please look elsewhere because your demonstrated judgment skills won't last in mine.

From your original post, (which wasn't a question btw. More a veiled advertisement for your little group):

"Yesterday, some misguided cowboy killed one of us and it was on. He or she was shot, again and again and again, right out of the server. The four or five times I took him out, I was scoring 40 to 45 points for each kill:

Ummm the story keeps evolving to suit your argument it seems...

Ya, again, you can be rest assured I won't be looking for your assistance. Ever.

Oh, and if you or anyone else in your posse ever comes into a hideout while I'm already clearing it? You won't be looting any bodies. 🙂

Griefer hunting or looking for trouble? Taking a mission to deliver a wagon, starting in Blackwater which was a rolling gun battle. And take it to Thieves Landing, which was also a rolling gun battle did not look to have much chance of success. Unless the plan was to get into some pvp all along.

The previous days before I mysteriously was not in your posse, the posse was not showing in the posse list at all and you appeared "offline" for 6-7 days it seemed either you were making poor decisions or looking to find trouble and start a war. Not into pvp all that much myself, after a few kills/deaths I've had my fill and am ready to get back to what I had planned on doing. I took a 5 month break until the offense/defense mode patch came out because players were going out of their way to kill others. Or at least it looked that way from where I was standing. I don't know if the patch really changed things that much or players attitude changed, but it is very easy to avoid player vs player conflicts now if you just use a little smarts.

In the last week as a posseless player I have killed 1 player who was acting strange and looked to be hunting me and I have been killed twice. 5 seconds later I was back to minding my own business and no server war erupted. I get mauled and killed by grizzlies 100 times more than by players. I think trying to run all the grizzlies off the server would be about as pointless as trying to run some random player off the server because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Maybe the players you and your posse seem to be having trouble with are the griefer hunters and you are the griefers. Being chased across different sessions as described by some of your posse members seems much more than a random killing.

So, having read through this thread, I can see how hunting could be misconstrued for griefing. Having said that, I would never “hunt” indiscriminately... Usually I just kill them once or twice and go on my merry way...they have to really earn it to get me to put forth that much effort to literally chase them out of the server.

That's because griefing as a word is over used.  Kind of like the word, troll, problematic, toxic...etc.

Some people are simply snakes in the grass.. Some people are just assholes.

For me personally.. I don't care whats problematic.   I can sniff a out a punk move from a mile away.

I believe in treating others how you want to be treated.  So if someone is being a an asshole, I just assume he or she, wants the same sort of treatment in return.

And it simply turns into a game of one upmanship and top that

I suggest you think more carefully before accusing someone. Considering both myself and another member of this forum were both able to get in and out of the posse each day.

Secondly, the ‘players I have been having issue with’ were most certainly griefers. They started by shooting me and my posse mates while we were simply riding along a pathway hunting on our way to the next stranger mission. They then shot and killed us every time we respawned. We changed servers because we ddn’t want to waste time with them when two of us had to log off soon. They then turned up on the new server and killed us again.

But, according to you, I am a griefer. So, as a griefer, I am now no longer going to come onto this forum as I do not enjoy this hostility.

If the goal is grief griefers..  Then you must become one with hostility.   Since that's the name of the game...

As a wise anti hero once said.
