My experience is that express rounds degrade the pelt most of the time while high velocity rounds usually preserve the quality much better.  A little less damage, but a cleaner kill.

Not if you get a headshot. Even if it's  not an insta-kill headshot, as is the case sometimes with larger animals like elk and moose, as long as the animal is mortally wounded with a headshot, it's perfect pelt will be preserved when it dies from bleed out. This is the case for all rifle ammunitions except for explosive.

Is there any benefit to going with the longer scope?

I only use the long scope on my sniper rifle.  I'm not 100% certain of this but I believe when you use the long scope on a rifle you can only sight in with the scope. Meaning, on the small and medium scopes you can alternate between using the scope or not using the scope.  On a rifle with a long scope you are forced to use the scope and can't sight in targets without it.

Agreed.  I just don't always land the head shot.  So, when I don't, my experience is that the high velocity ammo does less (or no) damage to the pelt.  Alternately, if it's a body shot with express ammo, it almost always degrades the pelt.  So, I use the high velocity.  And if I get the head shot, even better.

I believe you're right @Madrigalianwhich was why I went with the medium(?) scope on my rifles.

Yep.  I use a small scope on my Varmint rifle.  Most critters are fairly close but the scope helps to get the head shot sometimes when their partially obscured or whatever.  I use the medium scope on my other rifles except for the sniper which has the long scope.  The longer the scope the more accurate at range it seems to me, mostly comparing the medium scope to the long scope on the different rifles and at different ranges.  But, unless you are trying to target something very far away the long scope isn't much use under normal circumstances.  It's there when I need it but I rarely do.

I heard the same so I'm currently using the short scope on my rifle and I'm thinking of putting a short scope on my Winchester lever action. I'm pretty sure that you can get perfect head shot pelts with deers with a scoped lever action. What does everyone else think?

Buy the largest scope available per weapon... the only weapons that lock you into "scope" aiming mode are the rolling block and carcano... you will be able to toggle back and forth with the rest

Gotcha, thanks.  I couldn't remember for sure how that worked.

I'm getting ready to put a scope on my Winchester lever action!. This gaming session I will unlock the Double Barrel Shotgun. I'm also interested in finding out how much money I will make with the Trader Role instead of just selling to the butcher. I noticed an increase in profits from the first time that I used the Trader Role. The current balance I'm starting off with this weekend is $2,737.58. I will account for the cost of the Double Barrel Shotgun, but I will not account for the cost of ammo as I consider it a necessity like any other in game fees. Wish me luck.

Go full throttle with trader.  It's not even close.

How much meat selling and hunting would you have to do to make $500-$625?

There's a little bit of working up to the large delivery wagon, but once you get it, you're on easy Street.  I feel broke when I have less than $15k.

since animal spawns are inconsistent, people think it takes forever to fill a delivery wagon.  I can't stress it enough, work the sleeping cougar spawns.  Should take no more that 35-40 minutes of hunting to fill a large delivery wagon.

Nice!. Thank you for the tip. I want to get to Rank 20 to unlock the Silver horse. What area should I focus one to find Cougars?

I wish I could show you.  My phone sucks I guess.  I can't seem to add the screenshots I took of cougar spawns locations.  I'll keep trying

Thanks. I'll search Google, maybe someone has uploaded a map. Results are in from my Trader Role session. I started of at Rank 29 and ended at Rank 32. My Trader Role Role rank at the start of the session was Rank 3 and I ended at Rank 5. Money wise is about on par with my last weekend session. I bought the Double Barrel Shotgun!. Now that I'm Rank 5, should I buy the delivery wagon?

I can't think of any benefits to waiting to buy it.

Unless you really want the money for something else, I’d buy it.  No sense in waiting as it’ll pay for itself in few runs.

Glad that I bought it. Ranking up is slow until you buy the wagon. I'm currently at Trader Rank 8 and my overall rank is now at 34.

I was pure springfield but bounty hunter gave bolt action $350 paintjob... and stats are quite similar.   Now that I'm a high level it seems more prudent to have a quick firing repeater with explosive ammunition in very volatile sitiations...

For gators.. poison arrows.   Head-shots should give you perfect kills but I think its more random now.  It seemed like all you had to do was make some effort to move  it off auto-aim before.. but now its a little tougher.. wanting head-shots mostly.

Unless doing a daily I dont even make an effort to get a perfect pelt.. unless its a cougar or panther...  If I run across a herd I pull out my empty wagon.. fill it and end it away... trying to keep it empty... If wolves attack.. you want an empty wagon.

I most always have my arrows equipped on dynamite and have the bolt action with the paintjob... (what happened to all my leather paddings.. hmm).

Dynamite arrows work great against griefers... and even when I briefly experimented with passive mode... Dynamite arrows were easy to kill without auto aim...   I disengaged nazar and a warning shot with my name on it appeared.. so I shot him and his friend with dynamite arrows... and their donkeys also... Warning shots.. sound ominous.. now I realize he was being nice... oh well.

Dynamite arrows are not as fun as the fiery shotgun shells... but they are great against griefers.

I would hesitate on the medium delivery wagon.  I only needed to do 2 runs in that to level up to get the big one.  With hindsight, I'd have just done 4 or 5 small wagon runs instead, and saved myself the $500 or whatever I spent on the immediately obsolete medium wagon.

I’m not 100% sure, but For some reason I think you have to buy the medium wagon before you buy the large wagon... I don’t think you can skip it over

I'm on that understanding as well. But like Harlock1796 commented, I'm not far from the rank of the Hunting wagon and the other delivery wagon. I'm getting the Hunting wagon, but unless I get a large bump in XP, I'll stay with what I've got for awhile. I've been making a lot of money off of the Trader Role, but you wouldn't know it so far, lol, with having to take care of the overhead for this business. But everything is paying for itself quick, unlike businesses in other games.

Ah, maybe.  That would be R* logic - make you spend a bundle of $$$ on something you don't really need, just to unlock something you do.  As others have commented, though, once you have the big wagon, money worries largely become a thing of the past, so if you need to buy the medium wagon to get there, its a small price to pay - you won't miss that £500 in a couple of days.

How much more XP does one get with the big wagon?

Unsure about XP because by the time you get the big wagon youre level 20 pretty much anyway.

You do need to buy the medium wagon first... then the large.. I disliked that also..  I skipped camp tent levels.

If you do a delivery of between 26 and 50 pieces... You will be given the medium wagon for the mission... even if you own the large wagon.  same as if you have 25 pieces or less. It will give you the small wagon... which is helpful for train bridges, etc.

NOTE: If your on tricky terrain.. use "view mode" as it drives itself and you just need to hold the x button.. The yellow route will sometimes tale  you into crashes though.. sometimes.. a footbridge and cliffy trail for me.

NOTE: You can dynamite your wagon (up to medium) and if you spare the horse you can use the wagon horse plus your regular horse to carry TWO bags of up to 25lbs of goods each...

The large wagon pays $625 distant and $500 local... which I was scared to do but have done a few times...   I have had wagons attacked by griefers... fortunately my all explosive ammo level gives my repeater some clout.  Still $625 would be painful in this game.. a little.

So I mostly destroy my wagon when I do dailys... unless daily is about a wagon run.  I then throw the bag or bags upon my horse...

If I have a full large wagon... I switch to defensive (maybe) and go local...

I make money collecting mostly.

The hunting wagon I use mostly as a "courier".   I do not drive it around but if I stumble upon a herd or get attacked by spotted pigs or wolves... then I throw the lot of them in  the wagon and close it away... remembering to empty it often.

They are all forgotten purchases already as collecting has proven lucrative enough to allow me many other recpes and purchases since.

Huntings Okay... but now with collecting I can ride around and go.. aww,.. look at all the cute little bunnies frolicking.. and not even consider shooting them... and their ilk.

Cool dude. To be honeest, I'm only doing the Trader Role to unlock the silver coat horse at Rank 20. I really don't care that much for hunting in the game. Each deliverly run I rank up to the next rank with the medium wagon. I just need to find away to speed up getting the goods back to the camp for processing. I think the hunting wagon might speed everything up.

I got to level 20 within a couple of full deliveries with the large wagon - xp goes at an insane rate

Thanks. Then large delivery wagon it is. Overhead is insane, but you make your money back very fast. I like the fact that my grinding in game feels worth it.

Shotties are the best guns in the game and anyone who doesn't agree with me can just carry on talking to someone else because I will ignore them. lol
