I can’t recall the exact wording, but they mentioned these systems are for free roam and they mentioned that events such as stranger missions wouldn’t count towards the penalty systems, so I imagine stranger missions would temporarily kick you out of your free roam mode and into mission mode. But I’m just guessing

The biggest benefit is definitely gaining the experience points again. And a lot of them just happen as you play. I always check at the beginning of my session to see if there are any that need resetting that I may have missed

You won’t be able to lasso someone in defensive mode... a defensive mode player will be kicked into offensive mode. (I’d imagine shooting at people unprovoked might do the same). But at the same time, you cannot do critical damage or recive critical damage while in defensive, so it should limit the ability of those using defensive mode to make suprise sneak attacks. Perhaps a lasso/hogtied followed by a cheap shot, but that is easily thwarted by taking your knife out. Its yet it to be seen if explosive rounds or other massive damage dealing devices will be nerfed a little in defensive mode, allowing you to survive an initial hit. I honestly can’t even guess at what way they’ll go there. However it shakes out, it definitely doesn’t sound like rockstar is trying to encourage griefing. However, there will always be an @$$ that just has to try everything possible to use the system in place to their purpose of harassing others.

Sorry. Couldn’t resist... It was either this or a joke about spending every night in a different random posse in my youth...

Perhaps I’m just a little to old to be that Millennial... forget world of Warcraft, I remember when Warcraft: Orcs vs Humans was the game to play

Cars, although they existed, were kind of a rarity in the late 19th early 20th century... though I’m sure over time content will trickle in. Though New York (Liberty City?) probably won’t make the cut lol... a long horse ride from The bayou

Maybe it’s not just you, but I can’t say I agree with you quite yet. It’s actually sounding like it’s getting closer to be free roam I envisioned at first. Law and outlaw, Wild rebels and settlers/homesteaders, all interacting on the same map with rewards and risks whatever side you choose. Of course, I’m also half expecting a major disappointment, but I like to see it and give it a chance first.

I was wondering about that... without re-reading the page, I was thinking it could either be that you become marked as an enemy to the player you attacked, or you could be marked as an enemy to the lobby. If it’s the latter, it could make for some fun cops and robbers play.

Well, maybe your right. But I have the feeling no matter what they try, there will always be a fraction of the players that will do the best they can to find exploits to the system to take advantage of. And there will always be a fraction of players that find something wrong with whatever rockstar releases/patches/fixes and complain about it... Me, I think this system sounds like a good balanced approach, since it appears that for the time being at least we are all sharing the same lobbies. I’ll reserve my condemnation of the idea until after I’ve had a chance to try it out.
-
Why not give it a chance before tearing it down? We don’t know how it’ll all add up yet, or how it’ll be fine tuned down the road. It sounds like a good balanced approach to all tastes...
-
Yes, it appears the vision is becoming clear... you can be an outlaw or not as you personally see fit, but there are advantages and disadvantages to either side. It seems they’re going to encourage the free roam PvP while at the same time trying to curb it so free roam doesn’t become a giant free for all death match. I’m curious to see how the bounty system settles out down the road. I think it would be fun to have a more player involved bounty system.

Personally, in free roam, I carry the varmit rifle in my hands, bolt action or bow on my back and a pair of sawnoffs in my holsters. I like to keep the varmit rifle out because I kill absolutely every critter that crosses my path as I ride around... I like having the bolt action handy for when I come across big game or get into a long range fight. The duel sawnoffs are deadly for most any close encounter you find... they fill a nice compromise gap between pistols and long shotguns. in showdown, I like a lever (currently trying to ‘git gud’ With the Evans), dual sawnoffs, and the bolt action. But don’t take advice from me. I’m firmly lower middle of the pack at these things...

By the sounds of it, it’ll be a good balance. (Perhaps after some fine tuning). I never wanted to be immune to being killed or attacked. But I hate getting taken out by the cheap shot when I’m completely distracted by something else. This method at least someone needs to put the effort in if they want to pick a fight and I won’t let suprise instakilled. I can then take care of the situation without fear of getting a bounty or a bad guy blip. don't get me wrong, I’m sure it’ll be barely playable on initial release, but it sounds like they’re moving towards the world I actually want to play in. Still some danger, options for you to be a white hat or a black hat, a lobby potentially filled with players of all walks to make encounters interesting... But I guess we’ll see.
-
Yeah, they should add a cash/gold refund to those that already sprung for one off items they’re gifting. Or at least the option to sell one a a reduced rate.

By the sounds of it, you’ll be able to set yourself to free aim as well as prevent others from auto-aiming you, while still keeping your auto-aim for hunting/PVE. You’ll also be immune to the cheap headshot and avoid getting bounty or aggressive player status for fighting back. All without being completely immune to those who really want to pick a fight with you. Sounds about as close as you can get to catering towards all tastes while still keeping the player base in the same lobbies... I’m excited to see how it all works out in practice.
-
Wow, I kind of like the sound of the new hostility system and defensive mode system coming up. Sounds like the balance many have been asking for. Also a version of the free aim sort of lobbies people have been asking for, all without making those defensive players completely immune to attack. I’m actually excited to see how this becomes implemented... because what sounds good on paper can turn out to suck...

And I can’t wrap my head around why people Think it’s fun to hide on a rooftop and snipe someone leaving a store, or shoot someone in the back while they’re in the middle of fishing or skinning an animal. Especially when there is no reward for doing this and all it accomplishes is pissing someone else off for no good reason. But that’s just me.

Oh, it’ll likely be in a DLC down the road..

First, I’m not sure you can call the games time period the Wild West anymore. There were some Wild West holdouts trying to cling to life the way they knew it (like the Vanderlin gang), but things were already transitioning towards a settled west. Putting that aside, even the Killers of the Wild West mostly had some kind of motive for killing people. Even the biggest baddest outlaws ever invented by Hollywood. Be it robbery, fighting off law enforcement or vigilante gangs or the like. I don’t think many people just stood on the street, randomly murdering people on their way out of the general store. If they did, I doubt they would be very successful, since they’d likely be gunned down in the street, or immediately captured, tried and hung by the neck until dead. All that being said, I like the direction the OP is going with the risk/reward system. I don’t mind the violence per say. I just hate how people do it for no reason and little to no risk. If there was some kind of motivation/reward to be gained from shooting me, maybe loot some items and cash out of my sachel or something, and there was some kind of actual risk, like perhaps a real (significant) bounty gets placed on you that could be collected by other players when they eventually hunt you down.. the key is balancing the benifits gained from the murder with the risk you take by participating in the activity. Sure, you can make a grand or two killing people and taking their stuff, but if you don’t survive a real life few days after your last killing, you have to pay a good portion that back if the bounty hunter that gets you brings your corps to the sheriffs... Now if you spent that money your account goes negative and you have to live rough until you make it back (or buy gold bars?) your mugshot from the beginning of the game and your name can be used in wanted posters that go up in sessions you join (let’s not make it too easy with a big red blip seen across the map and your bounty value). Perhaps collecting the posters can give some aid in tracking you down (last seen in Lamoyne or wherever you spawned in) with some clues showing where your wandering as you move about the map). If you have a bounty and collect someone else’s bounty, maybe get some good guy points to bring your value or time down a little... I don’t know. What we have now doesn’t really work for me, but it was better than the random free for all the game started with. I just want some kind of balance risk/reward system that actually works in the free roam PvP. Something that can make it fun and challenging and potentially rewarding whatever side you choose to be on.
-
Personally, I find the free aim un-playable in the rockstar system. Being forced into it would be game over for me... But as has been mentioned on this thread all ready, I don’t want PVP to end. I do want some semblance of balance. If you feel like murdering someone in a fishing animation (and it is murder, you can’t really call it PVP when one of the P’s is standing there completely defenceless) then there should be some kind of risk involved. I think this last update is a step in the right direction, but it needs work.

Personally, I’ve never found one. I thought I did once, early on, but it turned out to be from leveling up

For my past few hours of gaming, I’ve been revisiting GTA, since a friend gifted me a copy. I’ve developed a whole new appreciation for how good we have it on RDR for griefing... at least I don’t have hours of my work thrown away in 30 seconds because some idiot on a flying motorcycle armed with homing rockets decided to blow up the garbage truck I was given to make deliveries in. Im finding it nearly impossible to make any progress in that game in its current state, and it’s so ridiculous I’m not even sure I want to make progress... I did try to knife a guy that pushed me over the edge of the roof in Blackwater, but I failed miserably. And to be fair, I did spend a fair amount of time wandering around town making the ‘shoot ‘em up’ gesture while they were fighting amongst themselves and farming cops. I probably deserved it lol

Honestly, I just love the setting and will likely play off and on until they shut the servers down.

Honestly, I’ve been taking a little break. It’s been fun getting my GTA criminal career off the ground from scratch my last few hours of gaming time

Yeah, 10 gold bars, plus two more from the nuggets I’ve collected over time = a free Evans Repeater, that I kind of wanted but didn’t really want to waste the money on. i mean, I always seem to be scrimping and saving cash, then I look at gold I’m accumulating and think there’s nothing I really want to spend it on. But, free gold plus an item I kinda want but not really... I’ll take it
