Griefing: Wasn't thinking about different methods.

So last night I got on, tried a few missions and no one would join.  Tried to join others a few times, Posses I joined sent me messages that though they had room, didn't know me and didn't want to take the chance.  I apologized and left.  On Xbox, I sent out a few feelers to the game club for players supposedly want to join up and got no responses.  So I decided to just go hunting and or maybe do some fishing.  While hunting a came across a buck, started to aim when I saw another player appear on my map, that comes riding through and shoots and drops the deer.  Then rides on chasing other deer.  So I pick it up and chase after him.  Thinking maybe the player would like that which he killed.  He killed several animals and never stopped to pick anything up, but did ride back and meet up with me.  I sent him a message, letting him know that I got his deer.  I remove it from my horse and drop it at his feet.  Then I leave to continue to hunt.  When he sees me mount up, he does the same.  Leaving the deer where it laid.  So I go and hunt, takes a few minutes.  Noticing he isn't far away.  I see an animal and take a shot.  Before I know it here comes again, running everything off and shooting everything he can.  Once again, leaving everything behind.  So I said another message, stating my purpose to hunting collect pelts and sell whatever I can.  No response.  So I start hunting again.  Rinse and repeat.  At this point I ain't hunting as much as walking through a graveyard of carcasses he has left behind.   Now collecting is easy, but I am feeling I am not enjoying this part.  I am getting no experience.

So I move onto fishing, a few minutes in he shows up and stands there while I fish.  No big deal.  Right?  Wrong.  This person then proceeds to start shooting at them and then starts throwing in dynamite.   So I politely message, hey that isn't helping.  If you would rather join up, I would be glad to help ya do whatever.  Are you interested?  No response.

For the most part I really didn't have an issue with this player, who ever it was.  They never attacked me, but seemed insistent on making it easier for me to accomplish some of my goals.  Almost to the point of removing the whole experience.    The no responses seemed to be griefing to a point.

So I changed servers and join a posse, that consisted of 2 other players.   We are in St. Denis, so I stop to get ammo from the post office.  While inside I get kicked from the group.  Odd?  Go outside and my horse is dead?  Odd?  At this point the other 2 are on the opposite side of town.  Really odd?  So I know I have to kill 2 minutes for my horse.  When these 2 come around and start shooting at me.  I hear one them claim that they killed my horse and the other makes a statement that this is the easiest way to get players to PvP where you want, by inviting then kicking them and hunting them down.   Tired and not in the mood.  I just shutdown for the night.

Then got thinking about all the ways players can now grief.  You could actually be to helpful to the point that the player can't enjoy themselves or you could actually invite them have them come to you and then grief them.

So in what ways have you been griefed that seems out of the ordinary?

The ways to grief are unlimited in the minds of idiots.

Always makes me wonder,  where did they get the mindset to come up with these tactics.  Their lives must be so miserable they need to take anyone and everyone with them.   Oh well it is a game, Hopefully they don"t take those beliefs with them into the real world

I don't know if that was necessarily a troll so much as perhaps a younger inexperienced player who thought he was helping.  Griefing usually has a pointed, targeted method to the madness, but this was more like the crazy guy I see every day who chases pigeons in Public Square.  He chases them just to chase them, and I doubt he'd even know what to do with  them if he ever caught one.

Well, to be honest, mingling with "randoms" in a session whether that means trying to join open posses, matchmaking for missions or simply trying to meet them in the open world is a sure way to increase your chances exponentially to be griefed.  .....that's for sure.

Personally, in the rare instances I do interact with randoms (even in a friendly encounter) I will break off contact if they can't be bothered to use a mic.  I'm not going to type out messages back and forth.

Instead of thinking about ways people can grief me, I simply do my best to avoid them and that seems to work 99% of the time.  Personally, I don't like griefers so I'm not going to do things that increase my chance of being exposed to them.

As far as meeting folks, I started a posse here and we now have about 36 members.  My PSN Community has 31 and is still growing.  It's funny that even with all of those people it can still be difficult to get folks to join up in a session (most seem shy) but I do at least get a chance to team up with at least one online friend a couple times a week or more.

If I'm playing solo, I won't deal with randoms but if I'm with a posse, I'm willing to take a few more risks.   .....and I've met some good folks because of it.  I guess I'd prefer not dwell on the bad aspects and would prefer to do what I can to make the best out of my online experiences.

btw, my friend got sniped last night by a player that we had been keeping a close eye on.  He seemed non threatening so we both let our guard down (bad move) and dallied too long in one spot.  After the shot was fired he somehow disappeared from the area but then reappeared across the other side of the map.  Instead of giving chase, we simply carried on with what we were doing.

We still don't know how he traveled to Saint Denis like that but we simply let it go and carried on with what we were doing.  We were interrupted for maybe 20 seconds and we were not going to let the brief encounter spoil our fun.

Had a similar experience to this one yesterday, I've been joining random posses as of late due to the lack of content and entered a group of trolls who were intent on trying to attack new members. After 10 minutes of failed attempts to kill me (geniuses didn't have friendly fire turned on initially lol) they preceded to kill my horse.

Now I'm not big into pvp but I have my perks all upgraded and fight smart, what preceded was the longest kill-streak I've ever had. These buffoons got killed around thirty times each in a 1 vs 2 situation, they failed to kill me even once. Feels great when the trolls get trolled.

Myself I no longer play on-line and will not do so..... Griefed and left ....... In fact by the time R* get around to putting in solo lobbies life will have moved on, if they ever bother. So unless those lobbies arrive real fast, I'll never play on-line. Of course i should be ready and willing to spend €100's and I would... in a private lobby.

Because the way I see griefing/trolling or whatever you wish to call it is this:

My wife and I go to the theatre to see some opera ... When we arrive the door man is showing people into queue for tickets; there are two lines

As we are about to enter and join a queue I say to the doorman ...

Me: Good evening.....  Both lines the same?

DM : No Sir, different.

Me : Really?  Different how?

DM : On the left (he gestures)  you pay to go in and get a good seat, with a good view. It's €80 each... Fantastic show.

Me : OK....  and on the right?

DM : On the right (Gesturing the other side)  you pay and  get a good seat, with a good view and some little arseholes sat behind you. They'll be talking, texting on their phones,  kicking your seat back, throwing popcorn at you and so forth ...... through out the show

Me : What? You're joking? ........... Is that really cheap then?

DM : No the same price, €80 .... just comes with a these complete arseholes, ensuring the show is totally ****ed up for you... because even when they stop for a bit ... you are just waiting for it to start again!

Me : So let me get this straight..... One pays the exact same money for someone to ruin the show for you? But there are people cueing for that? What is up with them? That  makes no sense.... Do they know?

DM : Yes they know, they are all warned  ......... Honestly I've no idea why they do it, though it is strangely popular ......  Maybe they are some sort of arsehole as well ...... who knows.

Quite why anyone spends money to be interfered with by idiots,  I truly have no idea ... Each to their own, people must do what they like ... But you won't catch me in the right hand queue, that's for damned certain.

Thing is, I only get griefed every now and again.  Most of the time everything is fine.

Of course, I just recently got griefed - highly annoying.  Minding my own business skinning an animal, get shot, lose everything on my horse - after a long time hunting.

With nothing left to lose I try to chase the griefer down - he rides for ages before I catch up with him (clearly he doesn't want to fight??).  Eventually, I get him.  Boom headshot.  Done?  Nope.  As soon as he spawns he shoots me.  Oh, he wants to fight now.  Ok, I shoot him.  I'm pretty confident I can kill him more times than he'll kill me - but wait, the coward has left the server!

So he shoots me in the back, runs off, and when it becomes a fair fight leaves the game!  Good grief, what a diseased anus.

Why even play the online mode if you don't want to be interfered with? That why there is a story mode. I understand the frustration behind getting killed when minding your own business by some guy who is literally only online to find and kill others. But don't quit the damn game over it...just get better. It annoys me much less now that I'm pretty good at holding my own. I actually encourage folks to try me these days. The only thing you lose if your horse gets killed is 1 medium sized carcus/large pelt, 2 small carcus and some pelts. ive yet to meet a griefer that I haven't been able to chase right off the map and rage-quit. All I'm sayin is stand your ground. Don't quit the game...its too damn good

Don't confuse interfered with and interact with?  I play online to interact with others, sometimes as an opponent and sometimes as a friend.  No one wants to play a game to have players grief them by shooting them in the back and have them run off or change servers when they can't handle it.

Last but not least, if all your players have to look forward to is griefing others, then the game isn't all that good.

It's a personal thing, but I still don't see how anyone can remotely compare story mode to online. The simplest illustration of that for me is, how much does your online character physically look like the story character? There are thousands of other examples, but that to me is the simplest.

You are right though about not quitting the game. At least give Rockstar a chance to implement their anti griefing measures. But I'm not going to "get better" just to fight off someone I'd probably never associate with in game or in real life. My opinion, but griefers are inherently bullies and not worth my time. When I want to shoot it out, I go into those quick matches. That's what they're there for, in my opinion. I'm weary of hearing the "but it's the Wild West" arguments which would only make sense to me if players would have to suffer severe consequences as those in the Wild West did (a "hanging judge" was no joke). Mutual combat was one thing back then but murder was quite another. In this game, the in game punishments do not fit the in game crimes. Until they do, the griefing won't stop. But I still say hang in there until Rockstar decides what it's going to do for us.

And before I forget, someone here posted the feedback site awhile ago. I use it frequently, posting two suggestions this morning (one having to do with PvE servers the other with losing levels for killing players how do not consent to combat). Please, please, use the feedback forum. Let Rockstar know if you're not satisfied with the game as is. It's a little broken as far as I'm concerned.

Your crazy guy sounds a lot like my cat.

She's run up to an unobservant squirrel, sniffed it's tail and walked away.

She also chased off a coyote once. Not sure what she was thinking there.

All I can say is I am not a griefer, nor do I like griefers (except 1 buddy of mine). And I used to HATE getting grief from players, especially during a long hunting trip.  NOW ...because I'm good, I don't worry about getting griefed anymore. I kill griefers and its rewarding to me.  Point is...im having fun and enjoying the game while yall are still here on this forum just complaining about it.

Many cases we are to still playing the game and dealing with griefers as needed.  Currently the difference is we see a problem and would love to see it fixed, where you just see it as complaining, so you come in and complain about our complaining.   In reality, not much difference we are all complaining about something.  It really it upto each to decide what we feel needs attention.
