In the first game, we were able to play as John Marston and later, his son Jack.

Knowing how the story is going to go based on what we have been given, John is in this gang with Arthur. What do you think the chances are we will be playing as John near the end of the game? Or maybe playing as someone else?

I thought this back when we first got to see Arthur. I had a feeling he would die at some point in the game and we'd either be playing as Dutch or someone else. I think playing as Dutch and seeing John's betrayal from that perspective would be better than playing it as John.

I just said this. My friend and I were talking about it the other day and while I do really love John's character, I don't want to play him as a "coward" on the run. I would rather play as Dutch trying to stop him and then John successfully gets away.

I am sure this will happen but I don't know if it'd be Dutch or John. I have no preference. We know how the story ends... John gets away and Dutch and the coppers are on the chase for him. What is important are the events that led to this.

Yeah the other dude mentioned playing as John. I can total see that happening. I would assume this is saved till the 70% complete+ range of the game. They would have us play as Arthur and he just gets killed off only half way in.

^ I would love that.

Like imagine you are mid-cutscene and you get panned from Arthur to John and you get told to hit the button that pulls the trigger. Right after that, you are just on the run of your bloody life. You are on horseback, it is night time, and you have a gang of like 50+ people hunting you down. It would be fricking epic!

Exactly! How crazy would it be to suddenly have to kill the character you've been throughout the whole game?

If they are smart, they will do just that. They will have you be Arthur for like 85% of the game and then just switch it on you and have you pull the trigger on him. One would assume you grow to enjoy the guy so it makes it even more intense when you have to shoot him. I see no way this game ends where he is alive.

Maybe theres a choice - kill John and continue playing as Arthur or kill arthur and continue playing as John.

That would kind of defeat the purpose of having the next game. We'd be playing a "what if" scenario then. Since we know John already lives on past this game, he would have to be alive. So maybe instead of killing John, you choose to let him go (on the run) and continue as Arthur, or try to take him down which would result in Arthur's death.

Duhh, of course, never even thought about RDR1

May not be any switch at all, but I’m sticking with John killing Arthur. Here he is double crossing the gang! ????

That is what I am saying. I mean if they do it in a way to make John look like a total BA, then I am all for it but based on the glimpse of him in the trailer, he looked like a push over lol

I have a feeling that this is part of a scene where everyone is sleeping and he goes to kill one of them and maybe Arthur busts him before he pulls the trigger. I think Arthur may play the role of trying to "be on his side" and keep him in line but will ultimately fail.

Well I guess we can put this speculation to rest. We’re playing as Arthur and Arthur alone- so says the recent leak.

Maybe they are pulling our strings? Or playing as someone else would be part of DLC? Ehh this kind of sucks in a way. I'm sure the game will be great without playing as someone else.

Maybe they’re taking a “been there, done that” stance- RDR , GTAV.  I’m ok with just being Arthur.

I don't see the issue with only playing as Arthur but now I am under the assumption that we will end up being killed by John at the end of the game though lol

I mean... I am down! They already showed us they don't have an issue with killing off the main character (or one) of the story in both RDR and GTA V.

I mean since this is basically not going to happen, we could assume Arthur dies or maybe he just goes into hiding? Maybe he fakes his death? The ending can be more interesting than just John pulling the trigger on him.

It's also possible that he just splits or dies between RDR2 and RDR1 timelines. But it's too good an opportunity to miss given the success of JM dying in the first one.

This never occurred to me but I think it's a possibility! Then again, I think people had mixed feelings about being stuck with Jack at the end of RDR.

Personally I would find it very interesting to see that play out. You’ll most likely care for both characters by the end of this. You’ve played them both. To watch one kill the other would be pretty crazy, Though maybe a little predictable. Which is why my new theory is that Dutch kills Arthur. There’s the emotional shock ending.
