“Today we’re excited to announce Red Dead Online, a new online connected experience set against the backdrop of Red Dead Redemption 2’s enormous open world.

Red Dead Online is an evolution of the classic multiplayer experience in the original Red Dead Redemption, blending narrative with competitive and cooperative gameplay in fun new ways. Using the gameplay of the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 as a foundation, Red Dead Online will be ready to be explored alone or with friends, and will also feature constant updates and adjustments to grow and evolve this experience for all players.

Red Dead Online is planned for launch in November 2018, initially as a public beta, with more news to come soon. As with most online experiences of this size and scale, there will inevitably be some turbulence at launch.  We look forward to working with our amazing and dedicated community to share ideas, help us fix teething problems and work with us to develop Red Dead Online into something really fun and innovative.

Access to Red Dead Online is free to anyone with a copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 on either PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will be available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018.”

Summary of IGN's interview with Imran Sarwar and Josh Needleman, of R* North and R* San Diego respectively

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2018/09/19/red-dead-online-devs-reveal-first-details

-Red Dead Online will launch in November as a public beta
-RDO will have multiplayer, cooperative and narrative components untilising the entire map from singleplayer
-Easy to play alone or with a group
-All the best elements of MP in RDR1 combined with best elements of GTAO
-RDR2 and RDO are like separate products
-Prefer to let players get to know the world in SP before introducing us to RDO and its mechanics
-RDR2 is a massive SP story regardless
-RDO will be a change of pace to GTAO - everything will be time/setting appropriate (i.e. no flying horses)
-The biggest DLCs of GTAO like heists and gunrunning provided R* with a template for what will work and won't work for RDO
-R-* want DLCs for RDO to release quicker and be responsive to what people are enjoying
-GTAO will still be getting updates for the foreseeable future
-Plan is for RDO and GTAO updates to be staggered in release
-Acknowledge that RDO and GTAO will/can have entirely it's own audience but want players to enjoy both alongside each other
-Focus will be on role-playing and morality (i.e. don't be an asshole)

I like the fact that Rockstar are putting a focus on incorporating role-playing and morality but I can't lie that I had a slight chuckle when I read the IGN Q&A and saw that this was one of the things they are focusing on, I guess their not blind to the fact that they built the platform for one of the most toxic multiplayer communities to ever grace the world of gaming.

What's going on with GTA as far as toxicity goes?  I haven't played it in awhile and only messed in the only part of it for a very short time, moving on to other games.  I'd imagin there's a lot of it going on in-game.

There goes the big decision on whether to jump into online at launch of play through story mode

True, but this gives folks a chance to let the story breathe and really enjoy it before they feel compelled to jump into the online so they don't fall too far behind.

It's a good idea, as far as I'm concerned, because it incentivizes folks to pick up the game on Black Friday for the Holidays.

Yep I'm all for it - takes the pressure off and everyone can enjoy story mode

For an online game that is centered around a Freeroam environment it is very toxic, with GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption Freeroam was made to be a place where you could mess around with other players, killing other players wasn't encouraged but it wasn't actively discouraged like it is in GTA Online, with GTA Online Rockstar decided in their infinite wisdom to include an in-game KD Ratio which has created a breed of tryhards and KD warriors who only care about getting kills and don't play for a fair fight or the challenge of PVP. They'll kill anyone and everyone from level 1 upwards and kill themselves when their health is low, there is also an abundance of military vehicles/weapons that they can use to kill other players so skill doesn't even come into Freeroam anymore and because there's no challenge to fighting or running away there's no deterrent for mindless killing.

It isn't just the gaming industry,  there are many players who thrive on the aspect to bully or grief others.  GTAO, The Division.  In PvP it isn't about competing as much as just picking on others.

The Division.

That's more on the designers making the DZ the way they did.  You can't incorporate PVP elements into a PVE game scenario and gate loot or content for said PVE content in a PVP zone.

To their credit, they modified a lot of the mechanics in the DZ.  People can't just randomly gank you by surprise anymore--you get a warning that someone is going Rogue now, which allows me to put on my shield and melt their face with my House.  I've avoided the PVP aspects of The Division otherwise, and have been perfectly satisfied, nay, happy, with the end result.

Not always with the lag and latency.  I have actually hit pulse, looked around, see no one anywhere, focus on NPCs, within seconds, get blasted from behind, get sent to the checkpoint, and then get then old "by the way someone in your vicinity is going Rogue".   My internet isn't that bad.  TD has issues.

Now GTA:O, I have seen similar issues where players are bored and all they do go and find players that can't fight them back.

Are you on PC or Console?  Everything I've seen anecdotally indicates that there are different issues between platforms.

I know that for me, on PS4, input lag usually only happens in hubs when I'm cycling though my inventory or cosmetics.

I really have no faith in people not being dicks online. I mean I am sure most will be fine but there will always be some trolls roaming around on the servers. I am worried they will come in packs. I only plan on playing with maybe 1 or 2 other people unless I hook up with some of you on here (you have to buy my dinner first).
