The Law/Bounty systems are SEVERELY FLAWED

How do your honor levels compare? Are they pretty similar or different?

Maybe you have a higher chance of being reported for a crime if you have low honor? No idea, just throwing it out there.

They are pretty close, both about halfway up the light side

At first I was like the guy in this meme... Now I just hitch my horse and walk through town. Much less chance of pissing off one of the townsfolk.  If I do ride through I just ride slow. I also found out this morning that if you diffuse the situation, and the sheriff just asks you to leave, don't try and leave on your horse. Arthur even said "Don't worry I'm leaving, I don't want any problems." I went to get on my horse and a bunch of red dots showed up and they all killed my ass. So when they tell you to walk away, stay away from the horse LOL

If you're asked to leave, run.  Exit the area as soon as possible.  The longer you loiter, the more likely they will gun you down for not listening to them.  I;ve noticed this with others as well that ask you to leave their property, a crime scene, etc. You can always come back for your horse if that's a trigger.

Honestly, it's not as if you have to walk on eggshells when traveling through town.  Just don't act like a rowdy drunk running into folks and such.  If you do bump one, "diffuse" using the dialogue if they get angry and continue to walk away.

I ride through towns and cities all the time keeping speeds to a trot when around people.  .....you don't even need to always go that slow.  I will even speed up when I see a street is clear if I'm in a hurry.  Just be aware that if you hit someone at that speed, they won't just be upset but you will likely be charged for assault or similar.

This game is rewards finesse, not heavy-handedness.   This is true with whether it's riding horses, gunfighting, participating in various activities, robberies, deception, evasion, NPC interaction and yeah, even just traveling through town.

I understand what you're saying... get out of town asap. I've never once ran through town running and bumping into people like a madman, or anything faster than a trot with my horse. Sometimes the NPCs just make a sudden turn and walk right in front of your horse  and it's unavoidable.  In that sense it's not really  fair . Until this morning, I've never been in a situation where I was asked to leave. I just figured that getting on my horse was the best thing to do in order to leave ASAP. But the law looked at it as basically committing another crime.  I was just trying to leave, and as soon as I got on my horse the cavalry showed up. And sometimes defusing or attempting to defuse a situation doesn't always work. They shoot you anyways sometimes. Like I said, now I just hitch my horse and walk through town. Much less chance of getting a ridiculous bounty on you, the towns are small, and it doesn't take long to walk through them. Haven't had a problem all day since I stuck to that  strategy. The meme was just my way of being sarcastic.

My gosh! I totally get it! It is SO insane to me how they let it pass. For example, one time, as I was leaving Saint Denis, Leymone raiders ambushed me. I ran to the nearest lawmen, expecting them to shoot the Leymone raiders. Instead, one of them got shot by one of the Leymone raiders. (They were aiming at me, but since I was behind the lawmen, he took the hit.) The lawmen instantly took his gun out and started shooting me. I did not have a weapon out or anything. I got wanted with assult. ???

Another time, I was in the bar in Valentine. I made the bartender mad. He started shooting at me. The sherriff ran in but he instead stood there and watched me get shot at. So I took out my lassoe and lassoed the bartender. Guess who got wanted with assult? Me.

I just don't get how the devs made the police system and then went, yep this is fair.

Thanks for letting me rant.

R* use the law system to keep us on our toes, these is literally no sense to the way it operates. LIke in GTA when  you are wanted for robbing a store and they cops shoot on sight.

Love the game but what amuses me most about this very subject is the amount of "witnesses" there seems to be IF you attack somebody in the remotest parts of the map. I have been in places where I haven't seen anybody for hours and along comes a stranger who seems to not like me, i try to defuse, he draws, I kill him and BAM...a witness to the crime pops up...kill him, BAM two more pop up...say wat?

Or how selective their witnessing seems to go.  Recently riding and saw a stagecoach being robbed.  I stop and walk up and the robbers start to challenge me,.  Bad guys draw and fire.  I draw and fire.  I kill the bad guys.   The person I just saved then takes off running and reports my crime.  For heaven's sake, I just saved your life.  At least give me a 5 minute headstart you little twerp.  I didn't eve loot the bodies or rob the coach.

It didn't really bother me that you got bounties imposed on you for  doing the story missions, it's just they they were way too high sometimes. a $300 bounty ain't nice when you haven't got a pot to piss in.

I've noticed it's usually cheaper to surrender to the bounty hunters. (create a save beforehand to check for yourself)

supposedly 80% of the bounty is all they take if you surrender.  I always just pay my bounty off in a different state.  you get so much money from looting, hunting, treasures, etc. paying off an $800 bounty is no big deal.

It is if you don't have it.  Early on I didn't have money, even after doing hunting and fishing.  So I completed treasure hunts and that was when I got set up with money.

there's a bounty cap in each chapter.  chapter 2 if i recall was $250,  doesn't take much to get that.  I was flat broke i found the treasure hunts myself.  Getting that solid red hat costs a lot ;)

Are you positive about that?  Cause I know in Chapter 2, I had a bounty that was about $500 at one point in Valentine alone.

Playing RDR2 kindled a desire in me to play RDR again and the contrast in riding horses is hilarious. In RDR your horse bounces off rocks, people, everything  with no penalty. On RDR2 there's none of that.

That's a good change.  gives you a bit of a challenge riding around the world.

Upto the point where now, NPCs seem to dive to get into your way.  Which isn't a good change.  It isn't really meant as a challenge, when at some point you aren't given an option.  The other day riding, I veered off of the path to avoid running into NPCs and they deliberately rode over to get in my way, which got me a wanted level.

Wonder if that's based on your honor?  i'm playing red hat, my son playing white hat.  I always get people cutting across the road in front of me on horses and wagons.  When my son rides around he got none of that, people would move away for him.

I wear the white hat.  So i don't think so.  Funny thing is my son is also playing and it's funny how his experiences are so much different then mine.

The lawmen in this game really are an issue, trying to play the game with a bad reputation is just too difficult with the endlessly spawning cops.. at least in the cities or outskirts of them even. The first game had a few guys spawn in mounted then if you dealt with them you could loot and escape before the next group arrives.. now I feel like I can hardly rob a shop without two witnesses being flagged, then getting flagged for robbery or murder when the owner happens to fight back. Now I do have a 500 or 5000 bounty on my head but still, I'm mainly trying to max my negative rep but that's hard as well even when you run about blasting everyone almost. Just trying to see if I get a special mount like in RDR but it been an uphill battle with the terminator army that are the lawmen. And if anyone knows whether or not you get anything feel free to spoil it for me, want to know if it's even worth wasting time on.

play better :P

I maxed my "red hat" honor a number of times during the first play through.  You get nothing for it, except the popup notification.

It's much more difficult to get white honor and keep it.  That's why you get a bunch of rewards for it.

Honor system has 8 levels for good and bad, dead center in your honor bar is 0.  +8 is maxed white honor and -8 is maxed red honor.

+1 = looting bodies gives you more tonics, jewelry, and food.

+2 = 10% discount at shops

+3 = outfits unlocked - Bulldogger, Chevalier, Corson, Cumberland, Cowpuncher, McLaughlin, Roscoe, and Valentine

+5 = 25% discount at shops

+6 = Final outfits unlocked - Deuville, Drifter, Dewberry Creek, Farrier, Faulkton, and Gambler

+7 = 50% discount at shops

and then the awesome bonuses for getting red honor =

-1 = increased drop rate for dead-eye tonics, thrown weapons, alcohol, tobacco, and more money/jewelry from lawmen/bounty hunters.

And that's all you get for red honor.  Other than the reactions of people that recognize you like the guys/gals in the random camps that invite you in, then get scared and run away.

That's no where near as bad as what happened to me recently. My character was really underweight so I killed a deer and used the town's campfire to cook up some food. I finished cooking and I went to leave. That's when this guy just starts punching me saying I was trespassing (even though I was just there to cook). I already had ideas of how unrealistic the lawmen work, They attack you when you shoot someone even though they shot you first, and they pin me for murder even though I killed a camp of O-Drisco's, that ambushed me.

But I wanted to know what would happen if a lawman sees this guy attacking me. So I just dodge and block his attacks and led him to the sheriff's department. There was a lawman looking out the window so I get in full view of him and let the attacker land some hits on me. The lawman does nothing but watch. Then I led the attacker inside, same thing he does nothing but watch. So I decided, what would happen if I manage to get the attacker to unintentionally punch the lawman? So with some manipulation I got the attacker to accidentally hit the lawman, that's when the lawman reacted... not to the attacker, he got away cleanly. No, I got in trouble. The lawmen put a $5 bounty on me for someone else's assault. What the hell Rockstar? I thought this was supposed to be realistic. But you somehow screwed up the cops. I really hope Rockstar fixes this. It completely takes us out of the immersion when we get bounties for a stupid reason.

Oh yeah and infinitely respawning lawmen. Get rid of that too please, Rockstar. That is why I liked the first game, the lawmen were a lot more realistic when it came to spawning.

Hi @Thanatos VoriganVorigan and welcome to the forums.

Just an fyi in case you created this post directed at Rockstar.....

RDR2 is a fan form with no affiliation to R* or 2K. Just thought I would mention that just in case.

Ok, that's fine.  It's just that some folks come here with pleas such as yours to R* thinking that this is an official forum.  I just wanted to make sure you understood that this was a fan forum.

R* does listen to criticism by the way and they do have a feedback site where players can submit it in case you're interested:

Obviously you're welcome to share your ideas, criticisms, suggestions and feedback here as well since that is why these forums exist.  ....but just thought I'd give you the link above in case you wanted to bend R*s ear on this as well.  :)

Something funny happened to me! I was close to Emerald ranch when a shepherd and his sheep came closer. I accidentally knocked a sheep over with my horse but didn't kill it (and my honor was good). Then the shepherd goes crazy and starts shooting at me. I didn't pull a gun (was thinking of lassoing him) when suddenly a single lawman dashes out of Emerald ranch and kills the shepherd!!! Then the lawman rides of as if nothing happened...
