Really Need Be Able To Keep Pelts/Hides Stowed On Horse

Controller throwing mad last night. Spent about 2-3 hours hunting. Had perfect Bison hide and two perfect birds on my horse along with an untold amount of hides stowed.

Ride into town to hit the butcher and BAM! headshot by another player. Respawn and call my horse, and every single F'n pelt and hide is gone.  All of them. Not even a hair, scale or feather remained. I sent him a F-U message and switched over to Far Cry 5 for a bit.

There, vent/rant done.

Never, ever ride into a town with other players present when you have that much to lose especially when playing solo.  Either wait for it to clear or move on to another butcher in a location that is safe.

The phone app is also a life saver in this regard.  I might take risks when I have less to lose but never after a big hunt.

I've seen you post here before so this isn't your first rodeo, cowboy. You know the fools we have to deal with online and that we'll be taking it in the shorts till changes are implemented.

I sure hope you tempered that message so you don't get any flack. You know those messages have a way of backfiring on the innocent party sometimes.

1st.  Don't lose your cool.

2nd.  Change servers or back out and comeback in.  What I have seen and now this isn't ALL the time.  There are times when if it is on your horse, when you come back in.  It may still be on your horse.  Then again it may not, try this a couple of times and you might be surprised.

The reason I say that is this.  This weekend, I had been hunting, I usually don't hunt long between Butcher visits.  Don't trust others, my loss of a horse full of pelts means nothing to them.  Where as they mean more to me especially when I just spent hours hunting 3 star pelts.  Which is not easy for me to find.  Any who, I was on my way and see a hideout.  So I say to myself, "Yoda, you know there just might be a treasure map being held in that there hideout with your name on it.   And yous, be pretty good about taking those out without dying.  Much?"  What can I say, a person whose talking to himself doesn't have a lot of self confidence.  ;)   In case you all missed that, last was said to be funny, quit being so dang serious all the time.  So I take down all the bad guys and have just the leader left and I have hopped off the old horse to loot a body.  I made sure the map was clear, I check it pretty regular, just in case.  It was at this point that I see Rockstar, bless their soul, they felt Good Ol Yoda was lonely out there by Tumbleweed and spawned him a real life A hole to keep him company.  This A hole lived up to his nickname that I assigned him.  Killed him twice before he finally got me and that stupid Leader of the camp was still alive.  So the A hole killed me, killed my horse, and last but not least killed the leader.  So I got mad and left the server, knowing I had too much to lose.  Yet I stayed and paid the price and lost it.

A few hours later logged in and my horse still had all the 3 star pelts.  So I went and sold them.  So afterwards, I went out and tested my theory and didn't prove a dam thing.  Other then sometimes you may lose or keep your pelts and there is any dam rhyme or reason that I could get to always keep them or lose them.  It just seemed a little random.  I died to others and I died to NPCs, whether people or predators.  Sometimes I would lose it all or keep it all.

Good luck!

I have been shot a lot when carrying pelts. I learned to avoid towns I see a lot of activity in. Like mentioned above, you can try hopping on another server though sometimes you lose stuff doing it.  I will typically just wait things out for clearing and go into town when no one is around.

Been there, sucks beyond suck. Besides using the app to avoid  trolls I try to keep  my hunting trips to 15/20 minutes. That way if I do get popped I don't lose alot. Try and stick to the areas around Rhodes as there is a lot less activity around there.

Question, did you actually lose feathers from your inventory or was that for humorous emphasis?

There have been times when I would ride all across the map when full of pelts and carcasses just to avoid towns full of griefers. Or if I'm planning on hunting near Saint Denis, I will spawn in New Austin and fast travel there that way there's  a good chance of my hunting area and butcher being empty.

Smart. I do the same, it's worth spending a  couple bucks to make sure you don't lose your pelts from a..........couple bucks.  😎

I've heard if you don't call the horse, and actually physically GO TO the horse, everything is intact on it's back.  Dunno if it's true for online or SP though I can't recall.  I've not played online so only going by what I've read!

Yes, good lessons have been learned from either disconnects or being killed:

- keep the trips short and simple

- at the beginning trip, only hunt things that are not stored on the horse. I save the larger animals till the end of my trip

- hunt close to cities with butchers where there is little activity...yes, Rhodes is generally good but Valentine can be good at times, too.

- as your hunting inventory fills up, watch the radar more closely (after every kills I bring up the map to see where everyone is)

- I will shoot and keep anything that I can keep on my person (squirrels, small birds, large birds, etc)...it all adds up and the small stuff is always running around. I keep the varmint rifle always ready.

- if I'm stopped in my camp, do not keep carcasses on my horse if there's lots of activity in the area.  I've had players come into my camp, remove carcasses from my horse and ride away.  I couldn't risk chasing them and dying with all of the items stored on my horse. 😞

- always have a get away plan and learn the map.  You may need to hightail it out of there quick if pink dots are approaching quickly. Remember, you are simply another deer out there and someone is hunting you.  Predator and prey are interchangeable!!!

One more:

You can rope and stab the sheep in the pens in Valentine.  Each carcass is perfect and goes for $3.50--there's often a LOT of them, and if you operate at night, there's nobody around to see you do it.  You can literally make $3.50/minute, which is about how long it takes to stab, store, and get to the Butcher.

I'd rather ride through gator infested waters than go into a busy town with a horseload of goodies (which I have many times). I almost never take direct routes if there's even one person too close to the butcher. I've familiarized myself with the ins and outs of saint denis and most of the map minus tumbleweed area cuz I am hardly there. I go through alleyways, hop fences, go through rivers/lakes, anything to avoid losing my stuff. Hell I'll even have my horse wait somewhere hidden while I go "scope out" the butcher area.

There is always someone watching.  Big Brother is ALWAYS watching you.  Which is funny, I have done this before and immediately got a wanted level, law got so bad after killing a few I had to leave town till it calmed down.  Meanwhile, riding along and a NPC got mad at me, so I killed him and his friend.  Meanwhile several nearby NPCs just ride on by while I start looting.

No problem.  I did that for about ten minutes last night to fatten my wallet before I was disconnected (again) after buying a rifle for hunting and slapping a scope on it.

Short of fishing and buying a lure, it's probably the best bet if there's nobody around Valentine.  Sure, you take a minor hit to honor for "Slaughter" but I'm willing to trade that for the ease and convenience.
