You need to use arrows for this I believe. The easiest way to do it is to head to Emerald Ranch and go near the fence. There should be chickens there. Just shoot 8 of them in a row. You have to one shot them.

I wish I had thought of that. Regular birds don't seem to count and I didn't realize this for the longest time. I assumed chickens didn't work either. Would have saved me like several hours knowing this lol

this challenge is *BEEP* annoying. since you have to kill the critters with one shot, that only leaves very small critters like rats and squirrels, and they are neither easy to find nor easy to hit. rabbits and bigger critters are not worth going after because you can't kill them with one hit of a small game arrow, and then the counter is reset. ARGH!

i'm gonna try the cave at elysian pool. lets see if i can get a couple of rats there...

Definitely! Thanks for that tip mizTik. I'm just about to that challenge now and that will save me some aggravation.

I would have used the Varmint rifle otherwise.

I got this game over a year after it came out, I'm glad there are still some people playing story mode.

Been trying to take my time through it because I love it so far (Chapter 3 here).

I know people who got the game on console and are still playing the story line. I guess when it is good, it is great. I mean I only just finished my first play through not too long ago and just completing odds and ends stuff but the game is hella fun!

Yesterday I completed survivalist 6, 7, 8 and 9, and I was about to start 10 but then I ran into a bunch of o'driscolls, and now i gotta do it all again. AAARGH!

Don't ask!

How long did it take you to do 4 of them? Man it felt like it took me AGES. I must have spent over 20 hours just on these ranks.

The most time consuming was #6, because I had to wait for scavengers  to start eating the corpse. Once I had killed all 5, i was off to the cave at Elysian pool for #7. After that, #8 was really fast, because I already had all the materials. Then I went to lake Isabella to catch the legendary fish and complete #9. Travelling to the cave and then to the lake also took some time.

Of all the survivalist challenges, this is the one that took me forever to do. I actually hated it but I wanted to complete it to move on.

Yeah, there were 2 other occasions where I was able to kill 2 birds with one stone.  one was the legendary sturgeon which I caught standing on train tracks, the other was the legendary salmon which was heavier than 19 pounds. Hell, it was even heavier than 19 kg.

I read about this when I was doing it and anytime I went there, there were no chickens. Do they only spawn or show a certain time of the day or something?

Good question. I'm on that same survivalist part now too.

I finished offline two weeks ago and have been progressing through online. I spent over 15 mins this morning and finally hauled 18.5 muskie out of Owanjila. Does that sound right time-wise to you all? Or do I need to work on my technique?   Productivity will be down at work today, owing to effects of recently acquired carpal-tunnel syndrome...

I have finished 100% story mode (Best in the west achievement) and all achievements except:

- Skin all animals in the world - (i will have to restart Guarma for this)

- earn 70 gold medals for story missions (im on 70%)

- study all animals across all states (Guarma again)

- get attacked by a bear 18 times and live (ill do it today bcoz its easy - just a lot of sleeping and restarting the game)

and i have to say: the challenges were easy to make and the most irritating and timeconsuming for me were those 2 quest lines that you have to make in order to get the Best in the west achievement : The Animal hunting requests (small animals) and then finding the squirl statue 6 times after it gets stolen AND Exotics quest line.

Anyway hope you finish all of them.

EDIT

Also forgot to mention some of the gambler chlallenges were time consuming as well.

No you don't.  The Guarma specific animals don't count toward and achievments.  You can grab them if you want to replay the game again, but you need not.

You can obtain both those achievements by playing after the epilogue.

Congrats on the 100% completion though, it's a good feeling to get that squared away.

Yeah, you'll see this mentioned in the guides.  I still need to be mauled by another 10 or so bears before I get that other one.

I missed out on a lot of gold stars for the missions, so I'm not sure I'll chase that one down (some of those requirements are challening).

For the missions, I'd probably replay story mode and gear up as much as possible before each mission and save the game before each one.  Replaying missions gives you s pretty basic loadout which makes gameplay more challenging - I'd prefer getting all the help I could.
