Benjo Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 So here's a little thing that goes on in my head when a new GTA or RDR game is set for release. I have friends that don't even own a console, and my brother has a PS3 but never plays it. Come October and beyond, RDR2 will exist in all its glory, and these people will go about their daily lives and never play it. They will sit and watch TV or read a book, not even bothered about the majesty that they would experience by playing RDR2. I just can't get my head around that. Discuss. 2
debbo89 Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 Both me and my OH are gamers but have different taste in games, he is more into online FPS - PUBG etc and does not care much for graphics, whereas I prefer single player, open world, visually pretty games. I couldn't believe when we met and he said he didn't like Grand Theft Auto games. I guess its just down to personal taste. Maybe seeing RDR2 in all its glory will change his mind!
Fribbo Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 Well they’re the people that are going to miss out, we will all be having fun playing it, good positive point of view to maybe change your mind about how you feel.
Benjo Posted August 23, 2018 Author Posted August 23, 2018 I can't help but think this is exactly how religious people talk when they speak of those who don't believe. YodaMan 3D Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 Well, I knew a few players that hated GTA cause you were always bad people doing bad things for bad reasons. To me RDR, you had been a bad guy that started doing bad things, but for good reasons. RDR2 from what I have seen, Rockstar has returned us to our roots of just being all bad. Yet it sounds like you can make better choices to change your fate (nothing confirmed, just rumors). Yet those players I mentioned before have been asking me about RDR2 and it sounds like they will be buying it.

Not buying a game because you don't like it, or don't like the genre or something, I can understand. It's the people who just aren't bothered, kinda play games but haven't bought one for 6 years and don't even know a new RDR is coming out, and if they did, still wouldn't be that interested. It's those people that I don't get. My mind can't comprehend it.

They just thought the killing was meaning less in most Rockstar games, cause usually Rockstar games you are a bad guy killing bad guys to take their empires. They have no problem playing games where they run around and kill people. They never even tried RDR because of the reputation of other Rockstar games. Edited August 23, 2018 by YodaMan 3D
Kean_1 Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 Not sure about religion but using that as an example, there are also religious people who are not judgemental or really care what others do in their life. They think that it's their business and their free choice. What matters is what they do themselves. I'm a car enthusiast and some have even looked at me funny when I'm cleaning or detailing my vehicles in my garage. I've heard all the jokes over the years from neighbors, etc. ......"once you're done cleaning that one, I've got another one for you over here." It was all casual ribbing as most had a respect for how great they looked. I see no sense going the bar to watch a ball game, getting dressed up in team colors/uniforms, screaming at players on the TV that will never hear you, etc. but I understand that is their thing that they're into. ....some people like gaming, some don't. I've been a gamer since the 70s so it's kinda in my blood.
redscrew Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 I can understand not wanting to play it if you are not a fan of GTA but to not give it a chance and having played GTA V, it is kind of confusing. At the core, the game will play the same and be very similar with just a change in the time setting. I mean if someone wants to just think "eh this isn't worth playing" that is on them. I know more people who intend on getting the game than don't.
Archbell Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 I can understand people who just prefer to watch TV, go see a movie or read a book but I can't understand the people who are hyped for Black Ops 4 and/or FIFA 19 but they have zero interest in Red Dead Redemption II and assume it'll be mediocre. EDIT: After thinking about it I've realized I was foolish to be confused by people preferring other upcoming games, people find enjoyment in different things. Red Dead Redemption II is going to be a high quality product without a shadow of a doubt but not everyone needs nice food, fine art or certain experiences to enjoy themselves and would prefer other things in their place. I used to work for this guy who could never maintain a private life, he got all the enjoyment he could ever want from drinking Supermalt, going to the theatre and banging escorts at Premier Inns. I didn't see the appeal in any of those things, I was a young loser and spent most of my time getting plastered on cheap booze, playing games and banging in parks because I lived in a packed flat. My long-winded point is that it's silly to see people as foolish for not being invested in or playing video games, I know people who are annoyingly more fulfilled and way happier than me and they do nothing but eat haggis and work the rigs.

Honestly, in my own opinion, although both may share some obvious similarities in mechanics, etc., I still think each game will offer enough of a difference in the gameplay experience to be judged on their own merits. I really don't anticipate RDR2 to simply be a GTAV set in another era. I do believe R* is smart enough to create a separate experience for players that perhaps uses some mechanics from GTAV but still has its own distinct feel. I even predict that the online portion of RDR2 will be quite a bit different than GTAV. Even if some people didn't like GTAV, I don't think that is a reason they will not like RDR2. There are fans of RDR that never liked GTA. Misconceptions might be a reason though.
Ibarrola Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 Well. I think that people in general still believe that videogames are just an entertainment for little kids (my co-workers think that), and they do not understand that it is a true and valid (and entertaining) mean for telling a story, in the same way a movie, book or tv show. People in general do not see videogames as a platform to tell an interesting and mature story. Therefore will never pick up a joystick. In my case, i love to make myself a mate (google it, it's an argentinian drink) sit back and sink in a great story, either way on a tv show, movie, book or videogame. 2

I agree but you have to admit that the stigma surrounding gaming as an adult is nowhere near where it was in the 80's and 90's. It's accepted way more now than it ever was. Many adults used to be embarrassed to even buy games back in those days. ......"yeah, it's for my son". 2

You want to talk about storytelling? .......TLOU has it in spades. It's worth it IMO.

I have been gaming since the Intellivision/Atari era, (I still have a functioning Intelliivision), and I still get people calling me 'weird' and 'creepy' because I play online games. I try and explain to these people that it's not all 13 and 14 yr olds playing these games, and that I can NOT control how old people are in the game session. Even had people go as far as to say 'grow up' when I tell them. My wife was never a gamer at all, and although she won't pick up a controller, she loves to sit and watch me play games like Silent Hill, Resident Evil and what not. She helps me figure out puzzles and gets really into it. I recently played RDR story line once again, this time with her watching every cut scene, etc., and she loved the story line. She even said "Whoa, it's like you're actually in a movie in a way". She wanted to know what happened next all the time. Now she's stoked to watch me play RDR2. The point is, once someone actually is exposed to a descent game like RDR or Resident Evil 7, there's a good chance they'll become more involved and interested. I will always be a gamer no matter hold I am, or how old my consoles are! Edited August 24, 2018 by Jackthestripper 3

Never played Friday the 13th, but I'm hearing a lot about it lately and I think I'll try it sometime. My wife and I pretend to argue a lot, she'll say "go here," I'll say "no I'm going here"... We're both laughing the whole time of course but it's pretty funny. Makes it more enjoyable when the person sitting beside you is actually watching you play and enjoying it too.
Qu3ster Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 My younger brother is one of those people. He didn't play the first one but he must have invested 6 months worth of time in GTA V so go figure. I think older fans will appreciate this game more anyways. He is only 16 after all and started playing GTA V when he was... 11! YIKES. I maybe should have told my mother. Oh well. lol

Nothing against your brother, but I certainly hope this is the case. I still wake up in a cold sweat having flashbacks to playing Friday the 13th, the Game, and having Jason being played by six or eight year old kids whose parents are cooking meth in the background of their trailer and screaming at the kid using racial epithets about how to play the game as Jason.
dIV4r Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Well to be fair here guys, these people just suck and don't know what they are missing out on. If they do know what they are missing out on, they are likely too young to buy the game.
