Before Rockstar did the Online Beta update, I was in chapter 4,  I have just been transported back to chapter 2 and I am crying

I FORGOT TO MANUAL SAVE........I deserve everything coming my way, all that gold and money gone, all those Legendary Fishes caught, Gone. all those Legendary Animals killed, I have to hunt them down again.

Don't get me started on the treasure maps, Dinosaur Bones, Dream Catchers, Rock Carvings

I am in tears........lol

I've gone back to chapter 2 twice now to get my horse back the first time, and then again to redo a side mission i was looking forward to and missed.  Just gives you more play time, and redoing those things is much quicker since you've done them once ;)

That sucks, bro.  I've never relied on autosave in this game (I actually have it disabled), simply because of the old-school practice of saving before I start a new mission, or whenever I "check a box" on a challenge/side quest.

Auto save sucks because if I screw something up, or my horse gets killed, I have no recourse other than to load the autosave--which in this game seems to be triggered by tradgedy more often than success.

I've done the same thing.  Seemed like i'd do a restore for something and then in the middle of a timed run or right when i was going to turn on dead eye and get that headshot i'd been waiting an hour for, i'd get the autosave popup.

Just to clarify, and for those that don't know, autosave has 4 triggers -

  1. Before and after story missions
  2. when you sleep at camp or hotel
  3. when you get the hand job from the cute girl while bathing (why else is she reaching into the tub right there?)
  4. when you buy or sell an item from a "store" - gunsmith, fence, etc.

PSA

Make a backup of your game's save files; either to Cloud or USB. Just in case something bad happens to your PS4/PS4's HD.

Good idea,  i went cheap on the xbox and only got the 250gb internal drive.  I have 2 - 2TB external drives connected for my games and media, i'll have to copy the save files to onedrive to be safe.

Yes, you never know what could happen to your PS4.

Most PS4's explode upon being plugged in/ burst into flames while playing/ eat your game disc/

The only REAL and TRUE way to avoid losing game saves is to buy an Xbox and Manually save your game often

I'm the same way.  I have Autosave turned off because I don't want it to save at the wrong moment.  I manually save after missions, task completions, perfect pelt received, etc.  I also create a new save file with each major story arc or character development point.  This enables me to go back to key points or chapters in the story if I want to with clear breaks in the save progression.  When I decided I wasn't ready to complete the game and end my time with Arthur in Chapter 6, it was easy for me to identify the last save in chapter 4 when I completed Arthur's satchels and start again fresh from there.  In chapter 5 again now and taking my time.

Whoa, there, Speed Racer!  Some of us are only on Chapter 2 (47%).

Heheh.. yeah.  I had help, pushing and prodding.  My wife would watch me play and before long she was asking me, "When are you going to go back and talk to Dutch again?!?  I want to know what happens next!"  lol  And of course, the story being so good, I had to oblige her.

I'd still be in Chapter 2, but i wanted to unlock the horse fence to do the challenges,  probably take me another month maybe to get all the pelts now for all the outfits and whatnot, and then there's the hunting side requests, and the rest of the challenges, and then there's all the other stuff you can do.

I learned my lesson years ago with saving. Never rely on autosave if you have the option to save the game yourself. I would save after every session that required effort so if I had been hunting a while, I would save after. If I was doing a mission and just finished, I would save after.

This is exactly why I manually save every time I complete a mission because I was afraid something like this would happen.

I'm like a crack addict when it comes to saving. It is actually annoying to me how much i save but i cant seem to help myself!!

Whoa Nelly! I just had a close call. This afternoon I spent a couple hours online and in single player mode. I got stuck in a mission

Spoiler

the Revenge is a Dish Best Eaten

with getting glitched into some barrels where you get dropped off. I was able to start combat off by shooting into the air. But could not shoot anything else. Hindsight as I write this : next time I'll try dynamiting myself to force a mission fail and checkpoint restart. So I got impatient waiting for my allies to die, and decided to force quit out and restart the game and use the autosave. The timestamp was only 6 minutes ago. While my last autosave was from late last night, I then watched the game forever loading at 90%. D'oh! It would not progress past that number.

I forced quit out again. Started Online mode. Then was able to choose a load file, and picked that auto save. Save result. I did see this workaround

https://www.gamerevolution.com/guides/463375-red-dead-redemption-2-stuck-90-percent-fix

Thankfully it worked! And only lost like a few minutes of progress. What's extra tough with this, is most of the screen is black while you are doing the steps described. You can see the bottom right section of the screen. So it feels like your doing this nearly blindfolded. But it works.

The above article does the steps from this R* Support file:

Continuous loading screen when selecting Story in Red Dead Redemption 2

Question: What can I do if the loading screen appears but the game doesn't load after selecting Story in Red Dead Redemption 2?

Answer: This can occur if the game did not save correctly. The following steps walk through how to save the game, which should resolve the issue:

  1. Launch Red Dead Redemption 2
  2. Select Story from the main menu
  3. Wait three minutes for the game to load
  4. Press Options on PlayStation / Menu on Xbox
  5. Press Down on the D-pad 4 times
  6. Press X on PlayStation / A on Xbox
  7. Select Save
  8. Select a Save slot
  9. Press X on PlayStation / A on Xbox to confirm
  10. Wait one minute for the game to save
  11. Press Options on PlayStation / Menu on Xbox
  12. Press Down on the D-pad 4 times
  13. Press X on PlayStation / A on Xbox
  14. Press right on the D-pad once
  15. Press X on PlayStation / A on Xbox twice
  16. A prompt should appear asking you to confirm that you wish to load the saved game
  17. Confirm that you wish to load the saved game
  18. After a few minutes, the game should load and you should be able to play normally

Note: If the prompt asking to confirm the loading of a saved game does not appear (Step 16 above), press Circle on PlayStation / B on Xbox several times and repeat from Step 11.

Please excuse me for reviving an old thread, but I felt compelled to sign up for an account here just to say this: NO TRUER WORDS HAVE EVER BEEN SPOKEN!!!

I admit I'm a freaking idiot for not saving often since I have autosave disabled, but I just got the "black screen of death" as I'm calling it and none of the suggestions in that Reddit thread have worked for me. I'm not even a freaking insider, so why this happened to me is so utterly-beyond common sense, I don't even know what to say.

But yeah, BropolloCreed79 was right on the freaking money with his comment about autosave being "triggered by tragedy more often than success".

Hey R* devs, maybe it'd be a good idea to save someone's progress when their health is CRITICALLY LOW, not JUST AFTER they have re-spawned!! Obviously it would have to be far-enough back that the player had time to take a health tonic as soon as they reload, but yeah...just a thought. Or at the very least, don't trigger an autosave immediately after death, and let the player reload their PREVIOUS autosave! Otherwise that feature is less useful than a submarine with screen doors.
