Thematic character names would be great.  We got to name our character, but why?  It's never used.  Instead of Western names, all I ever see is XL ShottyKing XL or bLaZeBoi48.  Shame :(

Probably because people would be wandering about with names like Mike Rotch, and Pat McGroine... Which I would find funny as hell, but people would no doubt complain.

And their PSN or other IDs are not like that?

I know I named my character "Plumpkin" to please the 7 yr old grand daughter and no one sees it. In story mode every horse was Plumpkin 1 or 2 or 3...etc. :)

Plumpkin is a Annoying Orange reference, it's on YouTube.

Not sure I got the concept.

What would you name your character ?

My character's name is Doc McGee.  I wanted a Western outlaw style name.  I want a game world where one can at least suspend to some degree the disbelief - I want a RPG, or at least an RPG-lite.  21st c teen 'yoof' names break the verisimilitude more than most things.

I think they just went for what most people wants to do...which is choosing a proper name. Same as the horse. When you can choose, you have a bit more power, so here we are with all sorts of names.

I joined a group last Friday from the Microsoft Game Club, apparently I missed the part where they said RP.  When I joined they was all in the saloon drinking.  Some rode by and started shooting up the joint and they got mad when I fired back and killed the player.   At my age, drinking in real life or in a game just ain't what she used to be.  They all died, so afterwards they asked me to leave.  Which was fine, cause I was seeking to go make money and xp, not set around and just pretend to drink and talk to others.   To each their own, I moved on and though I was in the same server, I just moved away so they could enjoy whatever it was they was trying to do.

Because I should be able to name my character "Prof. Plops Maghee" if I want.

Most of the names all look the same to me.  I'm sure there's a kernel of difference in there between them all.  But when you have to sift through all of the cute; Large Font/Small Font/Numbers for Letters/Letters for Numbers/ETC.  it just isn't worth my time to decipher who's who.  If I am trying to figure out who you are and your name looks like a fill in for an eye chart, guess what, I will simply call you "Target Next" and move on.

Personally, I think this hurts the process of building an online "community", but that's probably just me.   In all likelihood, even if they did start using character names instead, people would just name their characters in the same fashion. So, I don't know that it gains us much unless R* made a naming policy which would have to be policed and managed.  Other companies have done this in the past.  But I don't think this is a road R* wants to go down.

lol thats going to be like that for any rpg you play on console. only a certain percent of players care enough to name their toons in a RP aspect whereas the other percent is largely controlled by kids between the ages of 12-17 (totally made that number up btw). its not something you or R* can control haha

Agreed, thematic characters would enhance the roleplay experience for the roleplaying community, while displaying a set of realism for the general public.

All players with generic looking characters and xX UDeDBoiZ Xx style names need their balls whipped.  Just my personal opinion, of course. :)

I tried to use Doc in my characters name, wanted to name him Doc Murray, but filtering wouldn't let me use it. I changed it to Bull Murray.
