This update made my day... Already bought the lemat revolver.   I like the shotgun round.

So who figured out how to get into passive mode?  I don't see any setting for it.

It's in the Free Roam menu (left d-pad button on PS4).  It may be in a sub menu for options but its in there.

EDIT:  I just checked and yes, it's at the bottom of the Free Roam menu in options.  You have to scroll all the way down as it doesn't show on screen unless you do.

I leave my PS4 on standby.  It's already loaded on.

Took a quick look earlier and I noticed right away the wardrobe bug seems to be fixed, the daily challenges no longer have player kills in Free Roam as objectives, there is an indicator in the menu as to what your blip status is and a few other UI changes / improvements.  Cool stuff.

I got a new PS4 and didn't have it set up correctly to automatically download.

BTW, unless some haven't noticed, this update seems to end the "Beta"  portion on RDO.  It appears all mentions of "beta" have now been removed from the Feedback page, the RDO screens in-game, etc.  They also mention this in the patch notes.

Left on D pad, Online Options, Playing Style.

It seems that everytime you log off and log back on, it puts you into Offensive mode. You have to select Defensive, then you get a message saying something like "Defensive mode will enable in 30 seconds." That's the most I have in terms of a quibble for now, I wish it would just remember the setting, especially since I won't be using Offensive at all.

I logged in and purposely went to Valentine and Armadillo, places I've had the most problems before. Bodies and gunfire all around me and I just sauntered in on my horse. I got clipped by one bullet but it had little effect. Not sure what will happen if someone ever trains all their firepower on me.

The butcher continued to service me amidst all of the carnage--not sure if that is intentional or not.

Seems interesting so far...I'll know more when people get home from work/school and things get really crowded.

Yeah, I saw that.  ....but as you implied, it's more of a nitpick that a huge issue.  I'd also like it to default to the last mode selected.  Not sure what their thought process was there but maybe it will become more apparent as I play.

As for being mowed down, I'm sure there are limitations to the protections the Defensive mode affords.   The way I see it is that it provides the player more time to escape, enter or leave a merchant, etc.  Aggressors will become red much faster when attacking Defensive players and if they do kill you, there is now the option to "Press Charges" against them where they will immediately become red and have a bounty placed on their heads.

I think it goes without saying that you'll still need to avoid certain situations or players in general if you're looking for a truly peaceful gameplay experience.  .....because that is simply not going to happen especially when purposely putting yourself in harms way.

Free Roam is a "one size fits all" solution and that's not changing anytime soon apparently.  I'm just glad they made it a lot more accomodating for the PvE players in RDO vs. GTAO.

With today's major content update, Red Dead Online has come out of beta and is now a fully fledged multiplayer game. The past few weeks didn't yield any new content for the game, and now we know why - Rockstar has been hard at work to bring us the biggest DLC drop RDO has seen to date. There is a lot to unpack here.

Following a recent earnings report from Take-Two Interactive which revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 24 million copies, CEO Strauss Zelnick clarified that Red Dead Online would leave beta before the end of the next (this) quarter, meaning before the end of June. We expected that meant there's still a ways to go, but instead today's release marks the end of the beta.

releaseupdate-800x449.jpg

Over the course of the months since the Red Dead Online servers opened up, players have been submitting feedback to Rockstar day and night in the hopes that their input will result in a better game for everyone. It may have been a bumpy road, but hopefully with today's numerous changes and additions, Red Dead Online can become the game all the fans want it to be.

This doesn't mean Rockstar will stop taking player feedback or cease working to improve the world of Red Dead Online. Feedback will still be crucial in the shaping of the virtual world and continued updates will help the game grow over the course of the next few months - but for now, let's focus on today's update.

A Land Of Opportunities Storyline Updates

The A Land Of Opportunities storyline continues with a new batch of missions, continuing the thread started by Jessica LeClerk's revenge story. The game offers diverging paths for honorable and dishonorable players, with either path containing different missions and locations.

releaseupdate2-800x450.jpg

The Gunslinger alignment will pit you against the bandits of the Del Lobos gang, while the Outlaw alignment will have you help out Samson Finch against lawmen. These two paths converge again at the end of the quest chain, taking place in Blackwater where you'll encounter a new main villain. As before, the A Land Of Opportunities missions are co-op.

New Free Roam Missions

For something a little less bound by narrative, you can take part in new Free Roam Missions. A number of characters who starred in Red Dead Redemption 2 will appear again as quest givers, such as Thomas, the fisherman from the Bayou, as well as the Aberdeen Pig Farmers. The former provides lawful jobs, while the latter need help with less legal matters. Further characters will be added later on.

Posse Versus Challenges

New ways to test your mettle against other players are also on the cards. Posse Versus Challenges allows your group of friends to compete with other posses without any violence. Fishing, hunting and herb gathering challenges fill out the lineup for now with more on the way. Dynamic Events will also give new challenges and ways to interact with the world around you.

releaseupdate5-800x451.jpg

Poker

One of the most requested gameplay features has finally been added to Red Dead Online - Poker. Players can hit the saloons of the world in Blackwater, Saint Denis, Tumbleweed, Valentine and Flatneck Station. You can deal in a few friends if you want a calm game, or you can go for public games if you are willing to bet higher for the chance to win more.

Overrun Showdown Mode

A new Showdown mode has also been added to the lineup, called Overrun. Two teams strive to capture as many areas within the map while protecting theirs to end up as having the most once the timer runs out. Teamwork, strategy and communication is key in this mode.

New Items - Clothing & Weapons

New clothing items have been added to the game as well, however unlike the small weekly additions, this time the game is expanded with permanent items. The 9 shot LeMat Revolver and a large selection of new clothes like ponchos and bandanas have been added to the game, alongside new emotes - one of which, the Throat Slit, is free for Ultimate Edition owners.

releaseupdate8-800x450.jpg

Login Bonuses

Today's major update also brings with it a number of bonuses for players. Everyone who logs in this week will be awarded with 15 Gold Bars as well as a 25% increase on XP earned from Free Roam Missions, Events, Showdown Modes and Story Missions, and the same percentage boost on RDO$ and Gold earned from chests.

Anti-Griefing / Player Modes

Rockstar has also implemented new anti-griefing measures that were outlined previously, such as the new playing styles feature. Players can choose between Offensive and Defensive mode, similar to the way Passive Mode was implemented in GTA Online, outlined in this post. The Hostility system, also described in that post, has been activated in this update as well.

Tied into the Hostility system is the new Press Charges feature. If you are killed by a player in free roam who has higher hostility than you, the Press Charges feature becomes available during your respawn period. This allows you to increase the killer's bounty and Hostility as a penalty for what is presumably griefing.

releaseupdate9-800x450.jpg

Other Adjustments

A number of balance tweaks have also been implemented to make Red Dead Online a fairer and improved experience as a multiplayer game. Auto-Aim Headshot Tracking on enemy players has been removed and weapon switching has been made quicker. Projectile Lighting has also been tweaked to be instantaneous.

Players can select a new control scheme as well which switches up the crouch and sprint buttons. All PvP Daily Challenges have been removed due to feedback indicating that they promote griefing, and a number of passive challenges were added to replace them. New awards have also been introduced.

Free Roam missions will be easier to get into due to smaller signaling ranges and global timers, allowing a greater measure of planning. The Horse Specialty Selection will let you customize a sort of "loadout" for your horses, allowing you to select which steed will be your default mount in various modes and activities.

releaseupdate10-800x450.jpg

In-Game Economy Changes

Rockstar also took complaints about the game's imbalanced economy to heart. Starting today, every gold earning activity gets a permanent doubling of gold payouts, essentially making it half as difficult to earn gold as before, which is a major stride in the right direction. For a limited while, every time you rank up you'll get a gold bar as well.

PlayStation Bonus

To celebrate this major content launch, Sony is offering Red Dead Redemption 2 players a chance to try out Red Dead Online even if they don't have a PS Plus subscription. From today through the 27th of May, Red Dead Online won't require any kind of additional subscription to play on PlayStation 4.

Future Plans

Rockstar has also revealed some plans for upcoming content to be released later on. More Free Roam missions, Showdown modes and Challenges will be added, and the weekly addition of limited issue clothing will resume. Bonuses and special earning opportunities will also be scheduled weekly as well.

releaseupdate12-800x350.jpg

In a major addition, Red Dead Online will become more accommodating to roleplayers sometime this Summer. Players will be able to assume job-like roles that grant them new bonuses and unlock new kinds of content an activities. The first three Roles that will be available are the Bounty Hunter, Trader and Collector. These Roles will grant exclusive weapons and clothing as you progress along their paths, and you may select several roles simultaneously.

These new changes have transformed, and hopefully improved, Red Dead Online significantly, and we're eager to see how the game will evolve further. Exciting times are ahead of us.

I got it the second time I logged into the game to check on something when writing a reply.

I'll assume it may not reach everyone at the same time just as other gifts like this haven't in the past.

I got the $100 bonus even though I didn't play last week, I'm sure the 15 GB will turn up - these R* giveaways are rarely an exact science but you get them at some point.

Didn't play much yesterday but did check a few things out. They have fixed the award not resetting bug I had with selling products to the butcher, big 👍to that. Animals seem much more plentiful and carcasses don't despawn nearly as quickly (birds seem to stay for ages!). Initially I thought small alligator skins were fixed but when I had a large one and a small one on the horse they both disappeared when I sold the first at the butcher so not entirely convinced on that.

My first experience in defensive mode - I was sat on my horse in St Denis when a couple of guys tearing up the town came barreling around the corner on a wagon mowing me and my horse down. My horse died but I survived and after a moment of us all wondering what just happened and what action to take we all just walked off on our separate ways.

Couldn't get the companion app working - said versions were incompatible. I did an update to the app but that didn't make a difference. Maybe I needed to restart the game? Anybody confirm they've had problems or otherwise since the update?

Also, I'd like to apologize to @Azzimovve.  I accidentally merged your thread with this one and since yours was before I created this Update thread, you have now become the author and the first post.  I'll see if I can get it fixed but sorry about that.  I just meant to add your post to the discussion here since it was related.  ......oooops.

No problem 😉 Hakuna matata

Yeah, I got the 15 gold bars like 2 hours after I logged on.

So my question is...

$25 dollars to buy in to a public poker game.  Kinda steep.    You get to play that $25 or it's just a fee? Who's played?  What is the max bet? Unlimited?

My other initial comments/gripes that I'm sending to R*..

  • When you sell stuff at butcher it goes all the way to the top item, instead of the next item.  More annoying than anything
  • Camp is all the way at the bottom of the list
  • And I don't like that you don't get invited to free room while defensive mode.  It's like you got to know the times it comes through.  Yet I never got 1 invite yesterday and I must played 6 hours and it was a challenge.
  •  So I walked around in offensive mode (waiting for free room) and some 8 man posse came rolling into BW, and 1 of them shot me back of the head costing me a perfect bear pelt.  whole posse went red) so I incinerated at least 6 of them and only got a $.30 bounty.  I don't understand the 30 cents but was well worth it.  Defensive mode is the way to roll into town.
  • (and should add I was able to press charges but F that revenge is sweeter)
  • Still had at least 2 server crashes
  • And This new headshot mechanism makes no sense to me yet ...at least some sure seem to have it figured out in PVP.  I'm just hacking away with the shotgun and emptying the clips.  It's not free aim.  It's convoluted something.

And that first mission is kinda hard (especially when 2 of the people quit) but whoever the guy was that stuck with me we got it done.  I think he got the kill shot.

Right. Members of my posse have gotten it already. I guess I'll just have to wait...

I guess not... But I sold my horse, thinking I could buy a mustang. I ain't the right level though, and I'm planning on using those gold bars to buy it. I'm dying using my scrawny nag...

Yeah, just got shotgunned in the back while leaving the post office. Defensive mode definitely was on.

I parlayed, pressed charges, reported to Rockstar, blocked on PSN--and reported it as a bug to Rockstar. Well, i guess I found out what I needed to know...sigh...

Anyone know how quickly the player is notified of pressed charges? While I was parlayed, the guy actually got in my face and started doing emotes. I did all the reporting and blocking, then went to my player list to get the accurate spelling to report in the bug report. He had left the server.

If it's not working as intended I would definitely open a ticket with Support.  Even though RDO is out of beta, there are still going to be things that may not work right.  .....especially after all of these changes in this last update.

Here's the explanation of how the new features in the hostility system are supposed to work:

  • Added the ‘Hostility’ system to Red Dead Online that builds upon the changes to player Radar blips from the previous Title Update:
    • Depending on their actions, players will now be labelled with one of three Hostility levels - Low (dark blue Radar blip), Medium (pink) or High (dark red). Your current Hostility level can be seen in the Online Options section of the Player menu.
    • Players with higher Hostility levels will still receive the same punishments as the previous update, causing them to appear at longer distances on the Radar/Map and respawning further away when dying
    • A player’s Hostility level will not be affected when killing players through PvP gameplay such as Showdown Modes or when instructed to via Free Roam Events with PvP elements
    • Players can attack other players with a High Hostility level without any negative changes towards their own Hostility level
    • A player’s Hostility level will slowly reduce over time when not performing any hostile actions towards other players

  • Players now have the ability to ‘Press Charges’ from the death screen after being killed by another player in a Red Dead Online session:
    • If a player decides to press charges, the attacker will gain Bounty and their Hostility level will increase for performing that crime (this increase was the default behavior before this update)
    • If a player does not press charges, the attacker will not gain any Bounty or Hostility level for performing that crime

  • A new ‘Playing style’ option has been added to the Online Options section of the Player menu in Red Dead Online:
    • ‘Offensive’ playing style is the default existing behavior in Free Roam, allowing standard PvP combat in all Free Roam activities with no additional protections
    • ‘Defensive’ playing style gives players the ability to signal that they want to ‘opt out’ of PvP-based activities and aggressive interactions with other players in the session. Players with a Defensive playstyle selected:
    • Will be displayed to others with a faded Radar blip and a ‘shield’ icon above their head
    • Cannot lock-on to other players, and cannot be locked onto
    • Do not receive critical damage when shot, and take less damage in general
    • Cannot be lassoed, tackled or executed
    • Are unable to interact with some Free Roam Missions occurring in the session
    • Will be offered fewer Free Roam Missions with a PvP component from Mission givers

  • Players with an Offensive playing style will increase their Hostility level significantly when attacking or griefing players with a Defensive playing style set

  • Players with a Defensive playstyle will have their Hostility increased if they choose to perform any aggressive behavior towards a player that does not have a High Hostility level and be switched out of the Defensive playing style

  • Players with a High Hostility level will not be able to enter the Defensive playing style and must wait until their Hostility level is lowered over time

I played poker last night with a posse member in Tumbleweed and it was only a $5 buy in. It's how much you have to play with. When it runs out you have buy in again. Max bet seemed to vary. Not sure what controlled it.

Maybe they used explosive rounds?  Curious as to why you would die that quickly in that scenario.  N=Maybe because your back was turned? Others have already reported encounters where they survived several shots.

For me, I'm still very cautious around randoms even with Defensive mode enabled.  I'll purposely move deliberately, zig-zag, use another exit, etc. if someone is hanging around, passes by me on the road, etc.

You reported someone for playing the game?   Why even waste your time doing that?

Anyways.. As far as this update goes.  The new content is fun.  Sadly,, its either ruined by auto aim and lack of proper host lobbies.     And gating co-op missions on honor level is still lame.

The new convoluted bullsh*t panzy safe space hostility system is a complete joke.  And made "FREE" roam  more like "CONTROL" roam.  Which is easily abused..   Players can still easily ruin everything you're doing...and never even have to fire a shot the the player they are trolling, while they themselves hide in defensive mode.

POKER... has 'private lobbies'.    Which boggles my mind consider R* has such a hard on for not allowing players to play how they want.

The new HDR options are much needed.

Faster gun swaps is great.

It just loses its hard lock once you aim up.  Its effects nothing if you're quick with flicking up.

One thing I notice in GTA V Online and now in Red Dead 2 Online. Only broke players run around trolling and griefing players all day. When they try me, I usually go after them and put pressure on them for like 30 minutes straight by killing them every time they respawn until they either leave the server, or I decided that they had enough.
