Today, the world of Red Dead Online deepens with the introduction of three new Frontier Pursuits, each presenting their own unique path filled with themed activities for players looking to thrive on the frontier. Choose to become a Bounty Hunter and hunt down dangerous criminals, partner with Cripps in an entrepreneurial venture to turn their camp into a bustling business as a Trader, unearth treasures both valuable and arcane as a Collector, focusing on one role at a time or all three at once.

In addition to Specialist Roles, today’s update also includes a wide range of new features and gameplay changes to enhance the overall experience:

  • New items, weapons, clothing and horse-drawn vehicles
  • Directional damage indicators to display where your character is hit from
  • Additional horse breeds
  • The ability to change your character’s appearance without resetting progress
  • Expanded custom outfit slots
  • The ability to name saved outfits
  • Role-specific Free Roam Events
  • Increased selling prices for looted Jewelry
  • Increased movement and animations speeds for more responsive combat (including aiming, cocking and reloading), faster looting and more
  • Additional game balancing and improvements

For more details, check out the Title Update notes here.

Each role has a standard startup cost of 15 Gold Bars to acquire a Bounty Hunter License, Butcher Table or Collector’s Bag. However, it's also possible to unlock each startup item for free. Twitch Prime Members who linked their Twitch and Rockstar Games Social Club accounts by Sunday September 8th will receive the Bounty Hunter License free of charge, while those who missed that deadline should see the License appear free within 72 hours of linking their accounts. Collectors who successfully hunted down all 54 hidden playing cards in GTA Online can claim the Collector’s Bag for free through October 14th, while all aspiring Traders with an active PlayStation Plus subscription will receive the Butcher’s Table for free through October 14th.

Red Dead Online has captivated players since last November when it launched, setting them loose on a vast, untamed frontier filled with adventures and perils, not to mention chances to make it rich.

With weekly content updates of varying magnitude, the already vast world was constantly being updated - today Frontier Pursuits, the biggest DLC to date, has been released.

Rockstar has been doing their best to let fans know that Frontier Pursuits is coming and bringing real roleplaying to Red Dead Online. We've covered the features and the trailer extensively, and starting today, you can take on the mantle of Bounty Hunter, Collector and Trader.

However, alongside the thoroughly discussed roles, Frontier Pursuits actually adds a massive amount of other content as well - including entirely new weapons, new clothing items, new horse-drawn vehicles and other items. New horse breeds have also been added to the game to further expand your stables.

Another addition brings a feature that's rather common in games and was an odd omission from Red Dead Online. Directional damage indicators let you know what direction your character is being attacked from, giving you a better chance to react to dangerous situations.

One of the most anticipated features of the update, however, is likely the character re-customization. Red Dead Online just has one character slot, so if you end up not liking the appearance of your avatar, you'd need to delete it to change, losing all progress - but no more. Now you can change your character's facial features without losing your items, accomplishments and money.

Managing outfits will also be easier. Not only do you get more outfit slots with the Frontier Pursuits update, but can also give custom names to your saved outfits, making it easier to switch between them and know which combo you'll get.

Making money to buy clothes is also easier, thanks to increased sell prices for looted jewels, allowing you to get a little more RDO$ for your bounty.

Movement speed and animation speed has been increased across the board to make the whole game feel less sluggish and the combat more responsive. A number of other gameplay and balance tweaks have also been implemented to make the game more fun for everyone and to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

Players enjoying the new content on PlayStation 4 can look forward to some additional bonuses. Beyond getting access to the Butcher Table for free, you can also get the Trader Camp Theme and Weapons Locker for free once they're unlocked at Trader Rank 5. You'll also have access to the American Foxhound Camp Dog, Shoot The Sky Emote, three ability cards and three clothing items already, while Xbox players will have to wait until the 14th of October.

PlayStation Plus members will also get a bonus of RDO$ 250 if they play the game anytime between now and the 7th of October. Keep in mind that the Wheeler, Rawson & Co. Club is also available starting today, alongside the Outlaw Pass.

PS: If you're looking for a roleplay posse, we have a number actively recruiting in our forums.

Yeah. I was bummed about that too.

It lost part of it's usefulness when the proximity blips became a thing but was still really handy to plot paths and such.

I dunno.....  Maybe they thought it was an unfair advantage to those who used it and wanted to level the playing field.

Definately unfair advantage.maybe not to those who dont grief but those who do have ruined it for others.gonna have to keep eyes on the little radar like the rest of us haha.that safety net has gone from the app.

It was essentially gone once the proximity blips came into play.  The app map only provided a little bit more detail for those just outside of the radar but you can still see them on the edge of your radar.

The only real advantage was being able to look at the map and plot routes while on the move.  .....which does give the player using it a bit of an advantage in that respect.

I feel like the news cocking animations are so unrealistic. i mean, nobody can cocking/reload a bolt-action rifle so fast.

so what is wrong with the old reload/cocking aniamtions? was there anyone who dislike the old animation?

I could get over the cocking animations but reloading is beyond ridiculous and always has been.  I didn't see a need to speed that up and actually would have preferred to see it slowed down.

I never got to use it myself as my tablet wasnt compatible but always wanted it.shame in a way that its gone.hardened players know the map by now anyway.

Its not about knowing the map its about not having the inconvenience of going into the on-screen map. I really find the on-screen map a chore especially just for setting and clearing waypoints. Not sure it really worked for griefing people since the proximity update as kean_1 says but it was awesome for getting the lay of the land for NPCs at hideouts and when people were coming to attack you. It also gave you eyes in the back of your head when you were fishing.

If it was proving to give an unfair advantage to griefers then I'm sure there could have been a solution other than just taking it away completely.

edit: It was also a tool to combat players needlessly starting duels with each other (probably the real reason R* removed it) . When I would play in a posse with my brother (I had app, he didn't) he'd think every player dot appearing on the radar was out to grief on us but I would be able to see more clearly what they were doing on the app with the larger scale - 99 times out of 100 they were doing their own thing and had no intention of coming anywhere near us.  Now it'll be shoot first, ask questions later.

I'm very late to the party (got the game for Christmas from the kids), played the single player, but only two weeks into my online experience.  One question about the update:  does anyone know why there's extra free content for PS4 and nothing for us Xbox users?  I didn't realise that the game developers distinguished, or did RDR release first on PS4 or something?

Thanks in advance!

Sony negotiated for exclusive promotions / content with R* on this game.  The items for the most part (if I'm not mistaken) eventually have / will get released to XB1 players as well.

I could swear I remembered being told we could now edit our online characters after the update without losing anything? I see delete character here but I do not wish to do it unless I am 100% certain I wont lose all my progress.

  • The ability to change your character’s appearance without resetting progress

You access it by going to the online menu (left d-pad IIRC) and it should be under online options (change appearance).

Thank you!  I don't worry too much about not being first, as you say am sure it will turn up in the fullness of time.

Rockstar has always had a strong relationship with Sony, as has Naughty Dog. That's part of the reason I chose PS4 over XBone, though I have owned consoles from both Sony & Microsoft in the past. Some games are so exclusive they don't even cross platform at all!

Interesting, didn't know that about Rockstar.  I do love my One X, and my kids play online FIFA on my old Xbox, and have a lot of work stuff running through my Microsoft account (work for myself, these days) so I'm a locked in Xboxer, but I do look longingly at the odd exclusive PS4 title.  Was something about a guy and his daughter roaming a wasteland a few years back which took my fancy but wasn't to be,  Thanks for the response.

The Last Of Us?? Yeah that was Naughty Dog, same company as Uncharted. Excellent games.

......looks like you miss TLOU2 as well then.  ;)

TLOU was one of the few "on rail" story games I didn't mind. ...along with  the Uncharted series.  I may pass on the 2nd iteration though.

The Last Of Us, yes, that as it.  Thank you!

I can barely keep up with RDR and Elite Dangerous and beating the kids at Fifa so am almost happy to have a reason not to be able to get into TLOU2.  Hard enough not buying Gears 5.
