I don't like trolls either, but I think the game is great, isn't broken, and is looking on getting better and better.

There are easy ways to mitigate griefing, easy ways to respond to it.  Even at its worst all that is needed is to launch into a different server and move away from the pinks - 9/10 this solves the problem.  It's not worth not playing RDO just because of a minority of bullies.

I like what PvP adds to the game and that addition is worth the limited amount of aggravation that comes with online trolls, IMHO.

RDR2 free roam is nowhere near the same as GTAV:O IMO / IME.  In GTA, the map can be traversed much faster by players given the vast transportation options and griefing is much easier with the arsenal of modern weaponry at everyone's disposal.

In RDR2, its easy enough to avoid players most times and (like Poggy said), given a worst case scenario, you can still just switch sessions if there are too many of them or if they are persistent.

I've been playing almost nightly and while I had one really bad session with trolls, most of the others weren't too bad or were downright peaceful.  Even playing solo there are ways you can greatly mitigate the chances of running into trolls.  ......there's been plenty of discussion on it.

Yeah......   I just keep adding them in most sessions I play and hope that helps me out in the long run.  Given the number of players in this game, it's likely still a drop in the bucket though.

I've said it before but while R* has made an environment and even condones "griefing" in GTAO, I can at least understand it in that gameworld.  .....but not in the RDO realm.  In RDO, of course folks are living the "outlaw life" but there should be consequences for those actions.  RDR is not the same over-the-top, self indulgent, whacky, silly world that GTA is.

To be honest, RDO shouldn't emulate GTAO in this way.  GTAO still lives on.  There's no reason to have two titles that allow and even condone trollish behavior.  I'm not saying they should remove the elements that allow it but there should be consequences to incentivise people to play cooperatively.  .....to play the objectives. There are already PvP activities, why make the Free Roam an adversarial playground for those that wish to only disrupt others who are trying to enjoy the rest of the game?

Having said that, at least the pace is much slower by comparison in RDO which makes it a lot easier to dodge trolls.  ....although they still (and will) find ways to grief other players where they least expect it as folks discover new ways to ambush, exploit, etc.

It's definitely avoidable.

It's also the entire reason some people play. I haven't played computer with my RL friends for years. This game has brought many back to play, but it has only reminded me of how different I play to them. They don't even consider what they are doing as griefing and in this game there is an argument to be made, most people engage back with them and seem to be looking for the same thing. They are also indiscriminate when it comes to people getting caught in the crossfire. Everything not a Blue Dot get's shot at.

When playing solo have had almost entirely positive experiences. I fully expected the troll mentality so I always load into the area next to the one I want to be in. To make it even easier if your not sure, just choose either New Hanover (east) or New Austin (West) and head away from the Pink Dots to your chosen destination. When I have come across people i've often got a nod or a wave, i've held continuous aim at a few people who seemed mostly to want to come close just to say hey before going off about their business. As most others have said, it actually doesn't have to be a big problem. But I understand the desire to not have it be a problem at all.

I do think they could do away with the more humiliating ways of killing other players, I can understand why it annoys people, teabagging wouldn't be a thing if people didn't make it a thing. Philosophically speaking does it matter if it's only pixels if the specific intent is humiliation? Hog-tying should go, or maybe only let it activate if the person is a red dot or something.

I am all for friendly competitive PvP, yet freeroam maps that "fun" PvP requires you to interrupt some else's fun for you to enjoy the game.  PvEvP doesn't work, if the players have no interest in working together.  Far too many PvP players aren't smart enough to know when a player isn't interested in PvP.  Just this morning I went to sell my fish after a fishing trip.  A player killed me while I was talking to the butcher.  WTF?  So I respawn and go back to the butcher, kind of on a time crunch, so I don't want to get involved in needless PvP.  When I respawn another player rides out and kills me.  Still never fired a shot, not that I was given a chance after respawn to grab my weapon and fire anyway.  Respawn again, figure hell with it I, I go back to what I was doing and avoid dying.  Head to back to fishing.  Checking my map just in case.  I the last of the three that was in that town follow to where I am and unload on me.  Funny not one of those idiots seemed to notice I didn't respond, I walked away each time.   After that I just quit.

Not once was it fun for me or what I was doing.  Did they care,  apparently not.  Was it griefing not really, cause it wasn't like they all jumped me at the same time.  I don't even know if they was in the same posse or not.  It was odd that they never went after each other, while they was all in the same town.  Yet would come after me after each respawn.

It can be frustrating when you are trying to accomplish something specific. Overall, it's not that bad. There is no penalty for getting blasted by another player (unless you have pelts on your horse). The only thing I find irritating is the "Lock On" aiming. I mean, aim assist is fine since most people are using a controller, as opposed to keyboard and mouse. But locking on? That's chicken sh*t and getting rid of it would fix a lot of these one shot kills by unskilled players. Aim, flick, fire?? Too easy.

The best way I deal with the griefers is to embarrass them - kill them until they parley or leave the area. I had an idiot kill me last night as I was pulling up to the butcher in Valentine. Turned out there were 2 of them. I killed them both over and over while announcing their name over voice chat for all to hear, with every kill . If they rode back at me on their horse, I'd kill the horse too, and make a point to announce that as well (laughing at them the whole time).

After about 10 or 15 minutes of this rather enjoyable play, a posse of 3 rode in and started killing them before I had a chance. It didn't take very long before they had enough embarrassment and left the server. I waved at the posse, thanked them over voice chat, then proceeded about my business.

Later, I was taking out gang hideouts by myself in Tumbleweed and had a griefer ride up and shoot me as I was trying to L2 the gang leader. I saw him riding up on the map, but figured he was just checking things out - maybe wave. Nope! He killed me. No biggie - I had nothing to lose. He was a better PvP player than the other 2 idiots, but I still out killed him at least 3 to 1.

Seems to me that these types get satisfaction from irritating people. Like any bully - when you show them that you are not easy prey, they will look elsewhere. There have been a few times I've been up against great PvP players who are into griefing in groups, I'll just respawn into a new server when that happens. Being solo and taking on multiple players who are really good isn't my idea of a good time. Usually, these better players are in Showdown Matches where they earn gold, exp, and $$ - and not out griefing people for no reward.

If any of you want to posse up and run some missions or do a little hunting, feel free to find me on PS4. User name is upay. Just mention this forum in your request.

Hopefully R Star puts in a real bounty system and these griefers become wanted targets with no way of paying their own bounty

OH they will.  Rockstar will implement RDO's version of Shark Cards after beta, so these trolls will have mommy and daddy buying them shark cards so they can buy the best weapons and whatnot and payoff their bounty.

What i would like to see is the bounty system used and if the crime is repeatedly killing other players (call it Aggravated Homicide), the player gets banned for 24 hours say.  2nd offense is 48 hour ban, 3 strike 72 hours, 4th offense they're moved to a non-pvp server for a calendar week.  Offense count would reset after 48 hours, so if they got charged the 1st time, they'd have 48 hours after they return before the charge would be expunged from their record.  And then they can be moved to the non-pvp server 3 times,  after the 3rd time it's a perma-ban.  no more RDO for that red-head stepchild :P

I've played only a little bit of RDO. I've experimented a little bit with randomly shooting other players. It's beta after all. I haven't experienced anything I would consider as griefing or harassment in this game. I have had to deal with other players shooting and killing me, while I try to complete a mission: escorting wagons, mail delivery, hideout clearing. And I've done the same trying to kill other players when they were trying to complete a mission. For now, that's my mission to do so.

What do I consider as harassment? In Overwatch, it can occur in a couple of forms. In voice chat, this can occur when a teammate is being a jerk and saying you are trash. Repeatedly, without any constructive suggestions on how to change things up for your team. This can also occur with in-game text chat, during the match for the PC version. From both your team and the opposing team. The worst is when people start sending you PSN messages calling you names and being complete assholes. I've gotten so angry when this has happened to me in the past, that I wanted to hulk smash things. Most of my gaming in Overwatch this does not happen. But it is likely to happen a few times during a gaming session, over the course of multiple matches. Also, this seems more likely to happen in a competitive match, where your rank score is on the line. If your team is losing, then someone can blame a scapegoat. You can mute that player, mute there text chat, disable team chat, and on PS4 change your privacy settings to not allow for messages from people you aren't friends with.

Perhaps another solution would be to offer different server types; PVP, PVE, Roleplay, 2 sides Lawmen VS Outlaw, etc.

Nooooo... LOL, you can't do that!!! I'm a bad boy and got told off for that.... Apparently one mustn't name the pond life on here.  Nawty (sic) bad man that I am, apparently.

Firstly my apologies if people find this all a bit wordy.... However requiring immediate gratification is the sign of someone being one of life's losers.... So maybe read things and think instead.... Like books and stuff

Here's what I do not understand about this whole RDR2 On-line PvP and the Free Roam killa (sic) fools and all the rest.

There is a rally driving game that is truly garbage.... It possesses good graphics, good representation of cars, good audio, good physics and indeed it should be really quite brilliant... But it is not, it is totally flawed because;

A) It is all way too difficult... So only a few people who spend their lives on these rally games can get anywhere

B) No rewind  ......... Personally after a 10+ minute stage if I fall off the track 100 yards from the end... I cannot be bothered to start all that again

C) My game driving is good enough, I'm not a minor deity but I am in the top 1% on many tracks ... Yet in one section of this game, I cannot win against Ai...  indeed I come 4th out of 4 all the time at the lowest entry point.

After just a few months this €50 game was remaindered for €15 ... I soon saw why...... If one checked around you could find that world wide literally there were just a few hundred players left on the online tests. Less than a year after release.

Why? Because you could not play the damned GAME as you wanted to...... Complaints to the company were met with ".....the integrity of the game" LOL.... Idiotic little jerks

NEXT...

Then take the 2 major XBone driving games ... Millions sold, millions continue to play them until essentially the new games arrives, including buying DLC ... Yes I play them and have spent many €100's on them over the past decade ..... Why? Because they are games which not only do fantastic graphics, physics and everything else  .... But I can choose every parameter.

On-line? Not interested myself but I can enter Ghosting lobbies if i wished where there is no PvP contact allowed... You can play combative PvP if you wish but then guess what, it is those combative lobbies which  are always basically empty .... But I can play the same game solo, I can choose any one of my 700+ cars, I can choose my driving style be it auto, manual, manual with clutch... ABS on and off or super easy... type of tyres, engine and on and on ... plus colours and graphics..... Then I can set the track action... Aggressive or non aggressive Ai drivers and their ability level from Unbeatable all the way down to New Racer ... Then I can choose day, night, dry and maybe 50 different ways to make it rain.... The game can be set from no driving help to full help where a 3 year old can just push the go switch. Personally I have thousands and thousands of hours on these driving games and still play them every day. Far, far more than RDR2 On-Line

NOW with that all said .......

Here is what I simply do not understand with RDR2 On-Line ...

What does it matter to gamer tag 'Bread_Filla', (Note... this might or might not rhyme perfectly with the name of a pathetic little canker... BTW canker is a word.... it is not missing a W...)........  how I play?

If these heroes (sic) wish to act like that and kill every thing that walks, slithers, flies or rides a horse..... Then please go play with other people who act like that... Because I do not act like that nor  have I any wish to share a map with anyone who does. Myself I am presently just below level 15 on-line, because I cannot be bothered to watch the map with one eye all the time to see when the next inbred gaming tool will arrive.

But what I REALLY do not understand is why R* etc, wish to lose all that money which I will not spend on their micro-transactions... Because I will NOT be a split second entertainment for some brainless little social misfit, who has got way too sore down below to watch any more XHamster for the next 30 minutes.

Whilst I require zero back up from anyone on here or in life... I am certainly not alone in being fed up with this situation, quite obviously.

Today I tried RDR2 on-line for about 30 minutes... Did I die? No. Did I have any fun?..... No.

Did I get shot at for NO REASON AT ALL? Yes, three times..... 3 TIMES! Indeed I spent 30 minutes watching the flaming map for those little pink idiots.

If R* or whomever, change the game so it has a mode which allows one to NOT interact in free roam plus enables people to complete on line challenges, tasks etc etc etc solo ....then it might do OK.

But if it doesn't get changed very soon indeed ...... Then one has to suspect that after not too long, like a certain rally game... it'll die just as it deserves to.

Totally  agree with original poster.

I have though to remind that this is a beta and under construction. Many things can change and we should not think of what we are seeing today as "THE" online. Actually, for same reason, Rockstar should inform us a lot more on what they are working on and about these situations. It's in their interest and also indeed valuable information for us. We'd rather stay more in the story mode and do little online random just to test things.

I totally understand your disappointment, even though I've not been overly affected myself.

What are the pros/cons of separate lobbies?

The same pros / cons invite-only sessions provide in GTAO.  It allows friends to interact in the GTA game world without "randoms".  To still participate in some activities, explore, etc. without the threat of being trolled.

I see no cons personally except for the fact that (in GTAO for example) you can;t operate CEO or VP operations within one of these sessions.  R* wants players to be under the constant threat of other players in public sessions when making money.  Unfortunately, the only lucrative activities can only be performed in public.  ....downside for those looking to make a buck but an upside for griefers.  On the other hand, this keeps things "fair" as people can't make money in closed sessions and then dominate in public ones.  ......but then they can always just buy their way through the game with Shark Cards.

Personally, I don't like the idea of a forced blend of PvP and PvE gameplay.  It attracts griefers and is rarely fun for those that want just PvE fun.  Having said that, I understood it to an extent in the GTA universe but not so much (in its current format) in RDR.  In RDO I believe there should be consequences, incentives, etc. to discourage trolling.   ......vs. a griefer's paradise like GTAO is.

Embarrassing them, hoping they leave the server to go torment someone else.  Really isn't fixing the issue, it's passing it on to the next one.

You have a point, but, "it is what it is", at least for now. That's just how I deal with these murderous bastards.

The way I see it, it's just a game. People want PVE - play story mode, for now, until R* decides if and how they want to address these requests for passive mode - invite/PvE servers, etc.. If you venture into the online servers, there will be people who entertain themselves by harassing others. It always happens when people can hide behind anonymity and a keyboard.

I can't see any way to accommodate everyone. If they make separate PvE and PvP servers, the PvE would be boring and the PvP would be nothing but gangs of griefers. I think getting rid of auto lock on targeting would slow down a number of griefers. I'm betting that they simply aren't good enough to PvP without it, and they certainly wouldn't be able to insta-kill you over and over again. That could affect weapon balancing in other ways, making the shotty, and knife way OP.

I agree with several of your points except the highlighted remarks.....

What some may see as "boring" others see as fun.  The campaign was PvE and that wasn't boring IMO / IME.  PvE online in RDO also wouldn't be boring if there are still activities players and their friends can participate in, NPCs to interact with, etc.

I also don't believe in the idea that offering PvE sessions will somehow make Free Roam a troll-only zone.  We can already see that they don't need a separate mode to do this.  Trolls are going to troll regardless.

GTAVO already provides private sessions and they also still force PvE'ers into public sessions by only making certain activities (the most lucrative activities) available in public sessions only (e.g. VP and CEO businesses).  Personally, I hope they don't do exactly the same in RDO but there are still way to get PvE'ers into Free Roam.  They could make the reward match the risk using bigger payouts, etc.  ......but when PvE'ers just want to have fun with their mates, explore the open world, play activities in peace, etc., it would be nice to have that option.

If this were a PC only game then maybe different servers might work. Being a console game and being in the younger demographic, you are stuck with those that just want to ruin it for others, or gang all the noobs, because they do not want to go get things the proper way.

I played 100% PvP sims from 1994 to 2013. They I stopped all together. Why? As the players got younger and more of them, the chivalry died, and the all might kill board became supreme.

The only way to combat this when you are low level is to zerg the grievers.

Organize on forums like this. Make weekly play times, and be a big force to reckon with. It worked in the worked then, it will work now. Since I left the fighter sim world, I not seen ANY organized teams.

Over at EVE they found out that 20 low levels traveling together could take on a much higher level, yet fewer ship fleet. EvE is the ultimate kill board game. Folks camp gates for hours, just to blow up a worthless noob.

To quote Ben Franklin:

"we must all hang together or most assuredly we will all hang separately"

Dont get MAD, get EVEN

Back in Octonber there was some information data miners discovered in the code (of the app I believe) that indicated private sessions might be implemented at some point including "seamless PvE" (whatever that means).

The smartest way to fix this is to make any of those things that we are complaining about, a crime.

Like IRL, murder, bank robbery, theft, etc. are crimes, therefore all these posses will have a reason for being. If I kill somebody outside of a mission or in a duel, then there should be a bounty on my head.

Make it steep so as to have me lose a lot of money if I want to pay it off.

BUT, make it lucrative for the posses to track down these criminals. Otherwise, what are the posses for?

Base the bounty on how many crimes have been committed as would have happened back then.

Banning a player for playing as a griefer/troll should not be a choice BUT to add on to that, if you lose all your money by paying off bounties, then perhaps some type of penalty could be done.

Well to be real about it.

PVE isn't boring...   PVE is for CO-OP players or players non interested in pvp.

PVP would be for PVP players. Griefers are pvpers..  but not all Pvp players are griefers.

I've heard other people make this claim before that pvp would be nothing but gangs of griefers.  And in reality, it will mostly be gangs of griefers getting murdered by pvp players.   And thats how it should be.

While there are steps that can be used to lessen griefer experiences, which I've used myself, such as blocking griefers from my PSN and switching servers, I've grown tired of having to jump through a lot of hoops just to play unmolested.

I'm using a simpler personal solution. I'm playing Fallout 76, which has an anti-griefing system that I love, until Rockstar actually does something to allow PvE players to play their Online game without constantly being harassed.

If they lose enough players, then they will listen.

Rockstar won't get a penny more from me until I can play RDO without griefers.

Fallout 76s solution is kind of horrible.

Someone has to attack you.. And then you have to attack back and then its on.

Game needs invite only/friendly lobbies.    Not hurdles and punishments.
